Donald Trump’s racism and xenophobia are on full display. That’s what MAGA loves about him. That’s why his base is so steadfast.

His central mandate is racism. The Trump-Vance flags/banners in my neighborhood say “Take America Back.” From whom? Blatantly racist.

They think racism is cool and aren't embarrassed like they should be. I'll be glad when they crawl back under their rocks!

All the GOP have is racism: Migrant caravans, Haitians eating pets, Blood libel, "Black jobs". It IS their campaign.

How about wearing this "Keep the immigrants, deport the racists" shirt in front of them? 👇

That's a story line that begins long before the Vikings. For the purposes of this discussion regarding the Americas, I suggest we might stick to more recent centuries--like 1000 AD

Fay, mentioning Columbus prompts me to say that I have not observed the “Columbus Day” holiday for over 40 years. The beginning of the European colonization of the Americas began with his arrival. The violence associated with that invasion caused the enslavement and deaths of thousands of indigenous peoples and the displacement of their communities. I see his arrival as the origin of a disgraceful and shameful legacy. I cannot support that part of our history by celebrating his arrival.

Expand full comment
Fay Reid's avatar

Agreed, But I see Columbus day more as admiring the contributions of the Italian Americans, just as St,l Patrick's Day celebrates contributions of Irish Americans and Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican Americans, and Martin Luther King Day celebrates the huge debt we owe African Americans for their enormous contribution they have given the United States. Now if only we celebrated Robbie Burns Day (January 25) I being more than 90% Scottish ancestry would be very, very happy. We might add Bastille Day for the French Americans, and Guy Faux Day for the Brits. I'm sure there would be enough ethnic days to fill the calendar.

Translation:

In every country and continent conquered by “explorers,” people died for no apparent reason. The conquerors were only interested in seizing lands for their kings. [I would add 'and looting']

Things were even crazier at the time of the Crusades, which aimed to convert Muslims to Christianity by force of arms. That was also the case on the American continent, because the others who had been living there for ages were the "savages" and, in their opinion, were not civilized.

Human history is actually pretty bad because it has always been about power and wealth. And that others had to work hard so that some people could become rich.

Thank you very much, Apache. I am aware that the Indigenous people arrived in waves and probably some used an ice bridge across the Bering Strait. These adventurous people traveled all the way down to Tierra del Fuego and populated North, Central, and South America, millenia before the Europeans arrived circa 1500 years ago. My point was none of the Homo genus originated in the Americas, therefor we are all immigrants, so which immigrants do the MAGA maggots wish to remove?

Michael's German text translates to:

Donald Trump's father Fred was not born in Germany; The grandfather Friedrich Trump, however, actually comes from Germany, namely from Kallstadt an der Weinstrasse. Trump's grandfather returned to Germany because of his wife Elisabeth Christ, a neighbor from Kallstadt. But he was considered a military refugee - and therefore the authorities banned Friedrich Trump from Bavarian territory, as documents show: On July 1, 1905, the Trumps finally left Germany from Hamburg. Three months later, Frederick Trump, Donald Trump's father, was born - in New York. Donald had already claimed that his father came from Sweden, which of course was nonsense. When he was once asked why he said this, he reportedly said that his father had spent time in Sweden.

Unique thing about it is you make up words on the fly, so it's not as simple as going to a German to English dictionary. you won't find half the words. so, you have to break words apart into smaller words and see if you can find them. if you do, you have to guess what they all have incommon to find an equivalent single English word. that's what I know about German. German is also a Hodge Podge of several different languages mixed together, so about a quarter are similar to English.

How else would he mobilize people? In rural areas, where there are apparently a lot of Republicans, no one has to spend a dime to fill the stands. If journalists who don't want anything to do with Trump took photos at such events with high-flying drones, everyone could see how many (or rather how few) people actually gathered there. When Donald first became president, pro-Trump newspapers ran photos that were very cleverly taken to simulate a large crowd. Photos taken from further away have proven exactly that. I honestly can't really imagine whether Elon Musk actually pays people to ensure that the venues are well filled. Anyone who goes to Trump's election rallies has to be a Republican. They wouldn't convince a real Democrat to attend such an event if they gave him $5,000.

I just listened to a smart political behaviorist, Rachel Bitecofer, speak on the David Pakman show. She pointed out that most people who live in flyover country and who shop at Walmart do not give one little shit or pay attention. They don't care that Trump is a 47-time sex offender and a felon. They don't know that his generals have called him a fascist. They care about NASCAR and the NFL, and that's it. She noted that 63% of Americans support mass deportation, including 40% of Democrats. This is what we're up against, folks. Racism, misogyny, and dumb-as-shit laziness and ignorance.

If Trump wins, it's because of that. After people get deported en masse and there's no one to pick crops, and prices go up 20% because of tariffs and because there's no one to pick crops, and a national abortion ban goes into effect and a lot more women are dying, and their houses are all floating or burning or blowing away because of global warming, and Trump can do anything he wants because he's immune from prosecution, and Putin invades Ukraine and Poland, and they start rounding up journalists, these ignorant people will wake up and go, 'how the fuck could that have happened?'
