Excellent work. The watch word is “corruption.”

Corruption is the sorry centerpiece of the regime.

Brutal lawlessness and cruelty.

Without exception.

Excellent commentary on what is happening to our democracy as this repulsive fascist thug attempts to destroy it by gaining dictatorial control. It is a "hair on fire" moment in our nation's history, and I just hope we can reverse the trend in the 2026 midterms and even before the 2028 presidential election!

There are so, so many accomplices in our Congress, including our US Attorney General, and among federal law enforcement agencies clear up to the top, plus the corrupt and biased US Supreme Court which no longer can be trusted to publicly hear arguments, respect precedent and separation of powers and publish the rationale for their holdings in all cases due to their hiding behind their shadow docket. Our federal system and democratic institutions are designed to respect each other and operate independently, staffed according to professional standards and merit, and make decisions and act without fear, favor or partisan bias.

Merrick Garland was the last AG who could have prosecuted a former president for the high crimes of conspiracy and attempted insurrection. Joe Biden was the last President who could have leaned on Congress to fortify our democratic institutions with protective legislation. And Biden could have balanced the Supreme Court. He could have hounded Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act as an In Memoriam honor to a man whose whole career was dedicated to fairness and access to our democracy. He could have recruited effective communicators and raised funding to craft and disseminate to the public educational explanations for what happened on January 6th and why swift actions were needed to codify fragile, "gentlemen's" norms into fair-play legal obligations and enforceable requirements. He could have demanded swift prosecutions against DJT which were supported by The Mueller Report.

And Biden could have stuck to his word to be a 1-term President, could have promoted and helped his VP prepare to run starting in 2022, could have unshackled Ukraine and educated the public about Putin's power grabs. He could have pushed NATO to speed up Ukraine's membership, could have pushed to replace DeJoy with a nonpartisan Postmaster General who had no conflict of interest.

Biden could have defended the immigrant community and the trans community with righteous anger. He could have openly mentioned the parallels between the statements and actions of Trump and his surrogates and those of Adolf Hitler and more recent autocratic heads of state.

You show great insight. Unfortunately, hindsight is usually 20/20.

I am constantly appalled at how many people I know, people I would have considered above average in intelligence, who have no ability to see the bigger picture, the long run goal of this administration. I can't fathom why anyone living in a democratic society would want to risk losing it.

It seems to me that the average citizen can only concentrate on a few issues, those that directly affect them and theirs. In my own world, my high IQ spouse, who was raised old-time Republican, can't get past his dislike of the Democratic party, especially Joe Biden. My children, in their 20s, communicate with me that they think I'm too riled up over this, though they at least see what a disaster 47's administration is. Another of my "intelligent" friends told me that it's all corrupt and she sees herself as a stoic (?), and she'll just watch what's happening. But she's also taken to criticizing my Face Book posts and fact checking them (don't get me wrong, I don't want to post something that is blatantly incorrect, but often her corrections have her own spin on them). She has no children, thus maybe she feels less concern for the future. Other friends and family are sympathetic but tend to avoid the news because it's too upsetting, I get that, but it doesn't seem to go away or get better. I attend some demonstrations, donate what I can to groups I see as having a positive impact (does anyone else feel that there are too many organizations to support? I wish they would consolidate) and have done some politician-contacting.

We definitely need some stronger Dem politicians who are less talking point and more firm, to the point, focused, and not supporting a huge ego. Pete Buttigieg would be a possibility if the general public could get past their homo-phobic stupidity. And of course, 47's doing his best to make that an issue.

We have got to come up with solutions, but I admit to not seeing any very clearly.

The heritage foundation, Peter Thiel, Leonard Leo and their cabal are pulling his strings. Trump is not smart enough to organize or strategize on his own. He is the willing puppet. Keep filling his coffers with billions, wind him up and let him spew his hate and vile to his flock and he’s a happy camper. I also wonder what Putin may have on him. And, the Epstein files may have damaging info that he’s afraid of becoming public that may have nothing to do with the victims. Trumps top lieutenants like Miller are running the day to day. They became Republicans faster than you could lead them to the flames for that proverbial pat on the head from the unworthy to the ridiculous. It was one more lie from Rome for unlawful power and control, yet Rome has never failed to embrace a despot in its seventeen hundred year history as an institutional deception on its last leg, and most of its peopes fit the bill as lessons in looking inward first.... and foremost. Let's go further and be honest that it remains the blueprint for organized crime to this day. The greatest thing missing is its admission no priest has ever had the power to forgive sins, and the floodgates will open as they might have centuries ago. Be well.

Here's one thing I would like to see: ethics complaints filed with bar associations against lawyers and judges who refuse to recuse despite having verifiable conflicts of interest. And I would include members of Congress who hold law licenses and who cast votes on matters that overlap with their personal or professional interests.

And here's another thing that would be refreshing: Law Schools revoking passing grades in Ethics and Constitutional Law and History coursework for their graduates who demonstrate a clear lack of mastery and comprehension in these areas when their actions are held up for comparison to the correct responses in directly relevant, existing academic tests in use.

Or, law schools could stop short of actual degree revocation but still publish symbolic revocation to maintain and cleanse their reputations for professional excellence. Just as honorary degrees are conferred to recognize meritorious accomplishment, the very goal of recognizing merit is hollow if the esteem can only be adjusted upwards.

If an institution of higher education makes a carefully considered decision and public statement defending its standards of educational excellence by issuing correct answers to real-world tests of understanding regarding essential curriculum concepts, why that is its First Amendment right of free expression! Since our Supreme Court has held that corporations are "people" and also that employers' religious beliefs about contraception can now be forced upon their employees, thus displacing individuals' own religious rights, why should academic and professional institutions be prevented from exercising merely a symbolic reevaluation of their institutional approval? Symbolic reassessment of academic achievement *for cause* and *as explained* to the public could be a powerful societal corrective.

Goddam brilliant, excellently written, well reasoned piece telling a hard to-swallow-tale, but that is nevertheless true and fairly obvious. I was looked at askance by friends and others just a few years ago when I called Trump and his team fascists. I was being hyperbolic when I expressed the warning that, yes, it can happen here. Nazism should have taught us that. Henry Wallace, vice president of these United States, warned America in 1944 of American fascists. It doesn't have to come from anywhere else. It is entirely homegrown and very much a part of American culture. It is easier to be complacent and accept the hollow assurance that it can't happen here. It is happening here. And America is ill prepared for the upcoming challenge. Poor education system, corruption, political and social, a zero sum mentality fostered by a blind faith in Capitalism have all contributed to our dire current situation.

Donald Trump is a symptom of the rot that has taken hold in our Republic. Americans are unused to working hard to maintain healthy government, at least not enough of them, as Ben Franklin knew would be necessary. Trump will be a good lesson for our country if we get lucky and manage to survive him.

Sacrifice will be required. Make no mistake about that. It will cost time and money with no certainty of outcome. Give money to politicians who you are sure of their good character, volunteer for office seekers committed to democracy, and sue Trump and his cohorts every time they turn around. Make them dizzy. And, yes, it will be a longshot by the time it gets to SCOTUS but forcing them to rule on these issues can create overreach and they have lifetime appointments, but they can be impeached just as Trump will be if the Democrats take Congress in '26. And who knows Trump's stupidity, ignorance, pure evil, and incipient insanity may be just enough to motivate enough Republicans to put an end to these trying times.

Don't apologize for the pessimistic message. Prepare for the worst. I think t's speech at the UN was the final straw. What’s happening now isn’t just reckless—it’s calculated. Trump and his cronies are slicing democracy apart, piece by piece, just like Xi did in China. The “salami tactics” aren’t theory—they’re unfolding in real time, from censorship to targeting critics and rigging the landscape for 2026. If we don’t call this out and fight back, the window to stop full-blown authoritarianism will slam shut. We have to stop pretending this is politics as usual—this is a hostile takeover. Eyes open, and no excuses.

A lawsuit works both ways. If you are in business you cannot be afraid of lawsuits and of course if you are sued then you have the right to sue the party that is suing you. Imagine what happens then, no one can win with that. Any lawyer will tell you that the best defense is a good offense. HOW come the people that he sues do not sue him back????

Aleda's avatar

Part of the answer includes the fact that both defending against and initiating litigation is expensive. Another consideration is that even if the the original trial court finds in your favor and the appeals court agrees, the US Supreme Court may accept the case and overturn the two lower courts' holdings and impose a penalty against you, and you still have to pay your attorneys and possibly pay a fine or other penalty on top of that.

Expand full comment
Elena Freshman Schumann's avatar

Yes that is a possibility and a risk but as a retired attorney who has had my share of battles, it is not so easy to appeal, regardless of what people think. Appeals are not automatic in every case, also sometimes the Higher Court will summarily dismiss the suit because they just do not like it, they have that right. If you win a case and it is appealed you have the right to present you side of the story without penalty, but yes you still have to pay your attorneys to present the case to the Judge and sometimes you have to put up a refundable deposit (if you win). That is why if you are in business you need to have an In house counsel, basically an attorney that works only for you and your company. You pay them a salary, they do not work by the hour like a private attorney would do. It is just a cost of doing business now a days, and you are correct that your money will be spent but it is what it is.

The Bidens weren't caught ripping off their own children's charity, being fined $25,000 and no longer permitted in New York State to ever start another charity. The Bidens didn't have to have a watchdog over see their businesses. If anyone doubts all of these, fact-check me by using Google to verify that what I've said is true.
