Stop separating from one another I see as the first step.

The old divide and conquer? It is to gain and maintaining power divisively.

Once women start including every woman we will win. But as it is right now the divisions of race, nationality, color, disability, money, no money, strong, weak, large nose, small nose, no lips, large lips, fat, skinny and on and on. They are killing people in some parts of the Continent of Africa because of the shape of a nose. A nose! Skin Color! Crazy, insanity!

This has to stop before We The People can come together as One.

When you vote in November, remember this:

"REPUBLICANS HATE WOMEN"!

Republicans are failing the people in every way possible. They only care about controlling women and their bodies. Fascism. The only true freedom anyone has is their freedom of choice. Vote Blue and your freedom to make choices is protected!

Women should wear this pro-choice tee everyday 👇

I am, too. Why so much noise on behalf of Palestinians (yes, they deserve some measure of advocacy for the horrors they're going through) but not on Uyghurs, Tibetans, Chechens, Rohingyas & many other oppressed peoples in the world (most of whom share more values in common with those standing up for Palestinians), including Ukrainians fighting for survival in the most important conflict for the democratic West to prevail since WWII?

Why don't we see college students & others fighting for abortion & other civil rights, the environment & climate, disparity in wealth & power between rich & poor, the survival of democracy, & other issues that they say they care so much about?

They are playing into the hands of Trump, the GOP & Putin, who likely masterminded the Hamas attack on Israel on his birthday using the classified information passed onto him by Trump about Israeli military operations, while Biden is unfairly getting a large share of the blame for it.

Expand full comment

Well, I haven’t exactly been participating in a protest, but I have been calling & calling the WH & all my reps pleading for the help that Ukraine needed so badly.

I know we Americans & especially our news outlets have a short attention span, but it’s just ridiculous that from the moment of the Hamas attack on Oct 7, the Russian aggression on Ukraine 🇺🇦 just completely disappeared from the news cycle.

I certainly wouldn’t doubt that Putin had some hand in it because it sure did pull our attention away from what he is doing.

I truly do want to hear some updates about what is going on in Ukraine, has the tide turned at all since the funding bill finally passed, etc

Expand full comment

A good source for news updates about Ukraine is Daily Kos, where community writers annielli & quaoar write practically daily in quite a lot of detail about what's happening there, & other writers & commenters contribute lots of information as well. I don't think you'll find a better source.

I think Ukrainians are having some surprising success holding back Russian advances despite a striking disadvantage in numbers, while at the same time hitting key targets, including aircraft & ships, with missiles or drones, some of which go well into Russia, hitting military supply hubs, railroads & trains, & energy production & transmission facilities. One thing that has worried me lately is that the number of military vehicles damaged & destroyed, which used to be lopsided in Ukraine's favor, is now quite even. Russia goes in with masses of troops & vehicles, & don't mind if their own people get killed or their own vehicles destroyed, just as long as they're able to demolish & overrun their targets.

There is a day of protest, a strike, set for June 24. Any woman who supports these archaic, male-led anti-abortion, anti-birth control ànd anti- IVF needs, falls into the category of mindless, Stepford entities. They have daughters & other female relatives facing possible negative outcomes based on these bans. Even if they're post-menopausal, All Women must realize that people who can't possibly get pregnant are dictating, our futures for generations.

Should we begin advocating for Vasectomies and castration, just because there is no birth control permitted and we've reached the number of children we can provide for?

Expand full comment

I predict that if the MAGAts have their way about abortion, women will refuse to have unprotected sex and/or have children. There will be demands for hysterectomies at a young age. The birth rate will decline. If a woman has an unwanted pregnancy she will seek a dangerous backalley abortion. I did that back in the 60's when abortions were illegal. I was fortunate not to have complications.

We do not want to regress to the 60's. Things were awful then in alot of respects. I was dating a man from Kenya and was spat on and had threatening notes put on my apartment door. It was not acceptable for a white woman to date a black man in Ohio. Imagine what it was like in the South. The Republicans want to turn back the clock a hundred years or more not only for abortion rights, but for everything else a woman may want to do. Don't be fooled by their lies. They mean what they say in quiet corners amongst themselves. My son-in-law, an avid Trump supporter, thinks that women have no right to be leaders at our church. Republicans want women back in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant. Is that why they put that pathetic senator from Alabama in the kitchen to give the State of the Union rebuttal? Don't be complacent! We are in alot more danger than we think.

Women don’t get pregnant on their own. Maybe you need to grow a uterus and then you can have as many babies as you like.

Expand full comment

The thing is, Jimmy, women don’t casually bandy around the idea of having an abortion and then wait till there’s a “baby.” The moment the blue line appears, they KNOW. Any doubt or delay is usually due to circumstances beyond their control. According to the CDC, 93.5% of legal abortions are (were) performed before 13 weeks. (In my day, it was all ‘back-alley’ and only the wealthy could afford one. The incidence of sepsis was high. Women knew that, but were driven by desperation.)

Late term abortions today are exceedingly rare and are carried out to save the mother’s life, I don’t know what the “morning after” pill statistics are. But it must be very rare indeed that a family holds a funeral for a 0.1” fetus in a casket smaller than a sparrow’s eye. not even for the expelled 6-week fetus of a natural miscarriage. There must be a general sense it isn’t a smiling, gurgling baby.

Shame! you say.

When I was a child, there was a Roman Catholic woman who worked in our local Portuguese grocery store. Her face still haunts me. As does her body. For she was continuously pregnant for at least 25 years. The babies, all with Rhesus disease, were either stillborn or died within days of birth. The mother’s body was completely distended and her tragic face was such a picture of permanent sadness Michelangelo could not have done it justice. I imagine in your books she would have been rewarded in heaven for having been so faithful to church and husband.

When i walk a path with acorns crunching underfoot, I do not think to myself, Oh, how environmentally irresponsible of me, destroying an entire oak forest!…and…There goes a squirrel with half a dozen trees in its cheeks!

Anyway, I’m sure you believe yourself to be a good man, fighting for the helpless innocent. So please, when you get to Heaven (let me know if you need any help getting there 😃) say hello to Mrs. Madieros and give her my regards. Because I’m obviously not going there.

James, this is the problem I see coming: If TFG gets back in the WH (God forbid) and demands that pregnancies must be “monitored”, what will happen when a women suffers a miscarriage through NO fault of her own? I was a medical transcription for an OB/GYN practice. The word “miscarriage” will not be found in a woman’s medical records. The medical terminology for this occurrence is a “missed”, “spontaneous” or “incomplete” ABORTION. (I learned this the hard way after I experienced my first of two miscarriages…before I became a transcriptionist). That said, will Republicans want to punish every woman who is reported to have had a miscarriage too? Sometimes women who miscarry need to have a D&C procedure to avoid bleeding problems, clots or sepsis from retained tissue. If a woman has a miscarriage and is afraid to seek follow-up care, her health may be at risk.

Women do NOT use abortions as a means of birth control. Abortions, miscarriages, AND giving birth affect women physically and EMOTIONALLY. My miscarriages occurred over 45 years ago, but the tears still flow when I think of them. I was blessed with two beautiful daughters years later (each of whom, by the way, also experienced a miscarriage).

It’s fine to have your personal views about abortions. What’s NOT fine is making judgements on people who don’t share your beliefs. I personally believe that every man found guilty of rape should have a penectomy, but no MAN alive would agree with me, I’m sure. I don’t care for tattoos. I would never get one. But I would never condemn anyone for getting one. I detest smoking. I would never smoke. We know smoking kills. But I have no right to force you to stop smoking.

Please do some research on how a woman’s emotions/mental health and physical health can affect the growing “fetus”.

How would YOU feel if you never knew your biological father because he was in prison for raping your mother when she was 12 years old and her parents were against abortions? How will YOU feel if your pregnant daughter has to drop out of college after getting drugged and gang raped?

Adolescent males would have to obey federal law forcing vasectomies that are reversible when men are ready to accept the responsibilities of parenthood. It’s simple math, cost effective, almost 100% reliable and reversible. Far less trauma than an abortion both physically and mentally. One man didn’t take this suggestion very well. I think he went off somewhere and 🤮, coward.

Expand full comment

I agree. If some people hate abortions, there’s a very simple way to cut them back to only being done in the emergency cases….mandatory vasectomies.

Or as one very relational Mormon mother of six says, men are responsible for 100% of all unwanted pregnancies, so they should have to use a condom for every single sexual encounter, every single one. And punishments for the male if an unwanted pregnancy occurs because he failed to do so.

I like it. 💙💙

Yes, Jamie…I’m on Twitter warning people about this ALL the time! If they start allowing “monitoring” of pregnancies, you can count on them going after women who miscarry. The medical terms for miscarriage are a “missed” or “incomplete” abortion! I learned that after my first miscarriage over 45 years ago. Both of my daughters have had miscarriages too. They are quite common and are NOT the result of anything the mother has done to cause it. My biggest fear is that they will want to arrest and charge women who miscarry with murder. Women who experience a miscarriage may be too afraid to report it to their doctor. They may risk bleeding problems, clots, or sepsis from retained tissue, or death.

We need OB/GYNs to speak up and demand that the Supreme Court hear their objections to the decisions they are making on a matter they CLEARLY are NOT QUALIFIED to determine!

It’s really Men First, Women & Children Last. I think the Democrats should counter all this with any man who carelessly impregnates a woman should within 6 weeks have a forced vasectomy or face both Prison and a hefty fine. Put the shoe on the other foot.

I agree the man involved in the pregnancy face consequences. I guarantee in Texas Abbott hates women, those of color. His murderous buoys should be outlawed. Cruel and inhumane punishment.

Absolutely 💯 have the male involved in any unplanned pregnancy suffer consequences.

In 1972, when I was 19, abortions were illegal in Oregon, but my 18 year old cousin found herself pregnant and desperately wanting an abortion. The only place we could find was in Renton WA, and it was $100. (I know, right?) Three friends and I drove her up there and back in the same day. Even then, I remember feeling "This isn't right that she has to go through this." I can't even imagine now, 50 years later, that the country has flip flopped right back to 'the olden days'. It's just not right.

Well, it's been 60 years since Voting Rights were passed, look at where we are now.

America is regressing to the Dark Ages.

Not enough to just VOTE BLUE for Joe Biden for President. We need to VOTE BLUE up and down the ballot. Then when we win, we need to change SCOTUS.

Maybe there can be time limits, an overseer to let them know when to recuse themselves. I’m sure there are many more actions that need to be taken.

In regards to SCROTUS (a name I saw and liked😉) is to enlarge it with 4 seats -- that will be equal to the number of Federal Districts we have.

The number of seats in the Supreme Court have gone up & down several times in our history.

I suggest reading Thom Hartmann's book on the Supreme Court and following him here on SubStack.

He knows just about everything, it seems to me.

I've learned a TON of new history by reading some of his books, his SubStack, and articles/commentaries he's written about this!!

Thanks so much for giving me this information, Jean. I will be following Thom Hartmann

Also, listen to the 8 episode series podcast by Elie Mystal called “Contempt of Court” he also specializes in the scrotus & what we can do to correct the mess it’s in now. He also has a book: Allow Me to Retort - A Black Guy’s Guide to the Constitution which is excellent. I recommend the audiobook version

Believe me, they are awesome.

He also writes here, Xitter and on Threads.

I am outraged over the Florida abortion ban. Many women don’t even know they are pregnant at six weeks. I put the blame on Donald J Trump. He is a despicable man in more ways than one.

Didn't Gorsch,Kavanagh and Barrett committ perjuries during their hearings to join SCOTUS?

Expand full comment

Yes

Expand full comment

Yes!!! They absolutely did. They said they would respect precedent, but I knew they were lying when they said it. They were 100% put there to overturn Roe & they very quickly did their job. They’ve also thrown out Affirmative Action, anti-discrimination based on sexual orientation, & gutted voting rights.

This scrotus has lost all legitimacy & respect.

I must say that I am glad to be many years beyond menopause, but it strikes me that, living in Texas, if I had problems that would require gynecological surgery, it could still be a problem. The only limit I believe in for abortion, unless the fetus becomes unviable, is the normal point of viability - 24 weeks. I hope every eligible woman gets out and votes this year.

Expand full comment

Red States can't be trusted with a ban of 24 weeks. Abortion needs to be legal at any time the woman, in the first 24 weeks, and the doctor from day one to nine months says it's necessary.

Expand full comment

Exactly!! It is insulting to the pregnant person & to medical professionals to think that they would abort a healthy, viable fetus after 24-25 weeks for no other reason than that the person just changed their mind about being a parent.

I would venture to say that the main reason, if not the ONLY reason that later *elective* abortions happened was due to all of the barriers put into place over the years to try to prevent them. Sonograms, then 36 hr waiting period, then the same Dr having to be the one who performed the sonogram, to be on duty when you return for the procedure. Just ridiculous nonsense.

Also, the prohibitions on using federal funds, like Medicaid to cover them, & allowing insurance companies to deny coverage if the CEO or whomever has a religious objection. Those rules discriminate against the poorest among us & cause delays in obtaining the abortion the person very much wanted to get done asap, but had to wait until they could beg or borrow the money. As everyone should know, the farther along in the pregnancy, the more the cost goes up.

There is no reason to allow these powerful, well-funded forced birth orgs to have a say that they don’t want “their” tax dollars funding abortions. I’m sure my tax dollars are spent on many things that I vehemently object to, such as cruel & unnecessary animal experimentation, or perhaps manufacturing weapons of war to be used to commit war crimes as they are today in Gaza.

Our govt also needs to intervene immediately to stop the Catholic Church from buying up hospitals & then using their religion to deny not only abortions, but also tubal

ligations & vasectomies. They need to use the antitrust laws to break up the Catholic monopolies that they have already allowed to occur.

Well said! I agree with you.

Yes, it shouldn’t matter to those of us, male or female, who cannot get pregnant. We should all care about the injustice, the attacks on the freedom of our sisters, & participate in the fight to put a stop to it.

Expand full comment

We must make it without limits, there is no way to legislate every eventuality that can go wrong at any point in a pregnancy. I’m a retired RN who spent 42 years in acute care settings & I find it extremely insulting to nurses, doctors, & women to imagine that the non-medical public thinks that we would abort a healthy fetus for no other reason than that the pregnant person just suddenly changed their mind at 24-25 weeks.

That seems to be how it’s presented when we start putting time limits on abortions; like the person just suddenly decided one day at >24 weeks, “Gee, I really don’t want to be a mother after all.” How about we trust women, doctors, PAs, etc to be mentally competent, moral human beings without govt intervention??

Expand full comment

I agree about the non-medical public supposedly knowing more than medical people. That has really bothered me and made me angry. And I believe that we should trust the team of women and their doctors. I think I should have originally said something about the life/health of the mother as well as fetal problems, but as a Texan, I know exactly how that doesn't work. So I have to end up agreeing with you about no limits plus trust.

Mary, thank you for your column tonight. 💙

I seriously hope that the abortion issue fuels voters to vote for Biden and makes third party candidates along with Donald irrelevant to the Electoral College.

I think Congress should get rid of the electoral college and just go for a nationwide popular vote. That should eliminate all the gerrymandering shit. That way every vote would really count.
