There was a long, slow erosion that began, essentially, in the late 19th Century and has more recently turned into an avalanche. We need not only to dig out, but to fix what caused the catastrophe. Part of the problem, as Thom points out, is that laws that seemed adequate, or were at least workable compromises, at the time they were passed are ineffective against what we face today.

I just made the point on another Substack that social media needs to be regulated like TV is. We have ample proof of how dangerous it is.
