I’m so glad someone feels the way I do about Jon Stewart’s show last night. I turned it off I was so disgusted with his routine about Biden and trump on the being on the same level. What purpose did that serve? I liked Stewart before not so sure about him now after his routine last night.

Trish Quintenz's avatar

I felt the same way! So disappointed in Jon's "humor". This is not a time for frivolity. President Biden is an insightful, knowledgeable, decent man with decades of experience and a vision formed over that time of what America can be when lead by people of good character and courage. His age is a strength, not a weakness.

Vulkan's avatar

My god this is amazing.

Janice Radder's avatar

You are absolutely right Mary. Thank you for stating it.

Victoria Ryan's avatar

I hope you mean amazing as in you agree. I adored Stewart during the Bush Iraq debacle. I actually left the country then..for good but still am a political junkie. I have been wondering wth Stewart is up to and have mostly not bothered watching. It's way too sad.

Are you really that much of a dim-sighted dullard?

Oh look. Neo Nazi MAGA authoritarian fanboy sociopaths enjoy plugging their own crap on here too.

SNL is terminally unfunny, so no, I don’t make a habit if it. Morning after clips affirm the choice.

I, for one, enjoy satire. Stretches my brain. But during these fraught times I prefer the release of more obvious snark as I fear satire is often not recognized for what it is and may unintentionally become part of the MAGA noise.

Sadly for you, the wit of Sarcasm is lost on tfg & MAGA. They didn't get critical thinking before their brain was myelinated, it can't be learned after that so it's gone forever. Good news though, Trump is now the mentor of Jesus, just ask MAGA. And the other good news? They're practicing Idolatry, so easily worth a trip to Hell if God chooses & he probably will, he doesn't go easy on this one!

Meanwhile, Donald is probably yucking it up, (although privately wishing he could have done it), Navaltny went missing for 2 weeks & now is dead...we all know Putin did it! Jack Smith announced it on Twitter or X as the rich autistic one named it!

Billsburg's avatar

Same here. It was shocking and disgusting. Talk about someone who has “ lost a few steps”.

Fantome's avatar

Agree. Last night, Stewart was as helpful as a broken leg and as funny as a thrombosed hemorrhoid. Mary's term, "elder statesman," was perfect!

Charity's avatar

I also turned it off.

Tania's avatar

It is comedy- if you want news, read a paper or watch the actual news. Comedy can be offensive- so maybe you need a trigger warning at the intro.

Patricia Panora's avatar

Thank you Tania:

What people missed was that Jon also practically SHOUTED:

You MUST guard any progress you make :

With YOUR LIFE:

You can NEVER take any progress LIGHTLY and must CONSTANTLY WORRY that it might all slip away:

Because if you MISSED THAT PART:

You WILL miss it AGAIN.

Dearest Mary:

I like your style : but railing against Stewart because he told THE TRUTH you DIDNT want to hear(?)….

Is literally playing into the hands of your Uncle Donald.

You just lost MY respect with this doxing/swipe.

ITS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY:

We need EVERYONE rowing TOGETHER: disagreeing with someone’s content is fine:

But BLAMING STEWART because everyone ELSE fell asleep?!??!! in ‘12 AND ‘16?!!!!!!!

(Including YOU my dear). :

Is RUBBISH.

Take notes: Jon was shaming the ENTIRE CORPORATE OWNED FASCIST MEDIA.

Both of ya can do better:

(and YOU KNOW it).

Bob Ross's avatar

It wasn’t even funny though, it was indiscriminate and lame.

Barry's avatar

Comedy can be offensive--but it should not be stupid.

My mom and I were also disgusted, and we turned it off, too. The next day, we were both fighting mad. There are a lot of people in our community (black community) that support Tr#mp, and it’s becoming quite scary. Low-information voters who absorb the memefication of information are bound to destroy what's left of democracy. We try to reach people, but the pull of social media, their false belief that Tr#mp gave them the stimulus $$, and famous black people who like/support Tr#mp is the reason more black men in Detroit (and probably around the country) voted for him in 2020 than in 2016. I'm worried about 2024; Stewart knows better, and for the life of me, I don't know why he's doing this.

Truth and integrity's avatar

You're absolutely right. Apparently, he doesn't follow the truth about trump, or he doesn't care. I'm disappointed too. Yes, I used to like stewart - no more. shame on him.

How the fuck did that happen? Did the Dem's disband and defund our pandemic response organization early in trump's term because "It's not profitable," and then twiddle their thumbs when a fukkin' hundred-year pandemic event popped-up? That's some amazing management-by-way-of-creating-chaos operational b.s. that Donny ascribes to.

NDDV's avatar

No. Apparently the pandemic is just a miltiuse Chinese devise funded by the Americans and let lose at the appropriate time in order to wreak election havoc. Then the “Asian Anti Hate” universal campaign backed by the ChCP prevented open discussion, criticism and debate of the attack. Two-pronged and synergic, many compared it at the time to the Reichstag event because it was insidious, national socialistic and self-inflicted. Hazed and gaslighted, society accepted a gestapo-like global order.

Christopher Cosma's avatar

What the heck are you jabbering about? I had to look up whatever the fuck ChCP is supposed to be -- College of Healthcare Pros? What the hell time is it over in Asia right now, anyway? Maybe you're in Russia? Your American English is no worse than our uneducated, but it is off in a different way. I am sorry that I am not currently up to date on all of the conspiracy-minded bs that is out there at this moment. Nor will I be studying it 24/7, as you might be doing. I can, however add 2+2. D. trump, early in his administration, defunded and depleted our highly regarded pandemic response team. One guy. Why? Because he could. Within two years we were hit with an uncontrolled pandemic for the first time in a hundred years. Nice work. This did not require thousands of evil morons, somehow colluding in perfect unison, to bring about some astronomically complex result. All t took was some selfish, egotistical asshole to show-off how ignorant he was, and a handful of sycophants to allow his will be done. You can reply immediately, as you wish, with more bs, but I may not be able to get back to you 'til tomorrow -- or never. : )

I was upset with Jon Stewart for leaving the Daily Show when he did and not using his platform to get out the youth vote against Trump. And now he’s found another way to help Trump. A pox on him.

Sandy's avatar

And as I posted on Twitter, while he was right about what he DID talk about, he left out what was clearly more important, that one candidate, in spite of his age, is very competent, wise, effective, decent, kind and won’t end our democracy, but the other one is none of those things and plans to end it.

Judith Michelle's avatar

Oh my, what are you talking about? Competent?? He can’t remember who is living and who is dead and whether his wife is his sister too. Of course he is competent enough to enable Hunter Biden earn plenty of drug money without having to burglarize anyone. And which war has he avoided or ended - Ukraine, Gaza??

He is either a war criminal or else he is too incompetent to prevent the war industrial complex from waging endless wars. Take your pick.

Mary, Jon Stewart does interviews! I am sure he would LOVE to have you as a guest in n the show. His viewers need to hear the truth. Hillary's emails versus Trumps's myriad of crimes and moral violations. I can picture a teeter-totter labeled "GUILT" with Trump down on the ground and Hillary stuck up in the air. Yet his followers STILL adore the chant "LOCK HER UP!"? I can't bear people who can't think for themselves, refuse to educate themselves, and thrive on being directed--MANIPULATED--by an authoritarian figure.

Judy Campbell's avatar

Yes- you are 100% right on. I started watching it and became so infuriated I walked out of the room ranting at him. What the hell is he thinking? Not one thing is funny about amplifying the MAGA messaging. And any comparison is an insult to any intelligent thinking person with so much at stake. Not funny Jon, get off the air. This is the time for people with a platform to sound alarms loudly. If a few cheap laughs are more important than saving the country, you are misusing the opportunity you are being given. And then the media outlets replay it.

No, I got the sarcasm/satire from the get-go. I actually meant to respond to Eileen’s reasoned and elegant “fuck fascism, troll” comment. It was supposed to be directed at her.

Folks (particularly on the Left) bandy that term around, using it as semantic bludgeoning device. Same with the tired and overused terms, “racist” and “Nazi”.

My guess is that 90% of people using the term “fascist” do not actually know what it means. And the 9% that do, could not coherently articulate how that term applies to Trump.

I know (or surmise at least) that you are probably a liberal using sarcasm and satire to make a point. Bravo on that. It is clever, funny, and believable.

But believable only if one is a complete dullard. It must be, at some level, disheartening to see so many of your fellow liberals being so dim-sightedly clueless on your whole project, responding with such lovely invectives towards you.

Sadly, it demonstrates how impulsive emoting drives so many of them rather than measured reasoning. It is clear as day what you are doing. And doing it well I might add.

Good observation. Thanks.

On The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell Monday night on MSNBC, he did a wonderful story blasting the media, particularly the New York Times, about its terrible coverage President Biden especially Robert Hur’s report.

Barbara Woodward's avatar

Lawrence O’Donnell is the man!!!

Peggy Dorwick's avatar

I had the same reaction! What the hell was Stewart doing. The jokes were easy, based on old, tired stereotypes and not funny. It made me angry and sad at

Maura McNulty's avatar

"For an 81-year-old, President Biden’s accomplishments are astounding:" I'd have taken out the "For an 81-year-old," because Biden's record has been truly extraordinary, despite the gigantic odds. Had he been 42 years old? Still extraordinary. What I took away from Stewart's show is that by and large, we are not yet afraid enough of a Trump presidency. And we have allowed our understanding of what Biden's policies have accomplished to be shaped and constrained by the far right propaganda machine. Somehow, it's all the Dem's fault for not effectively countering the onslaught of right wing information. What about the responsibility of the right wing to communicate honestly?
