Carter was undermined at every turn by both Republicans and Democrats, then Reagan struck a deal with the Iranians to keep the hostages until after the election so he could get elected, then, make a big deal of his efforts to free them. Graciously, Carter greeted the freed hostages while Reagan smirked. Reagan had learned a lot from his predecessors, and from his time as governor of CA, do what you want, then claim it was not only necessary, but critical for safety, to keep calm, or whatever came into his weird brain (attacking Berkeley students). He got fake economists and some real ones to push his/their stupid "Trickle-down economics," which a lot of Repubs still believe in and push despite the reality that the super rich have only become more super rich, only now, even more powerful, powerful enough to have bought elections, Supreme Court seats, pardons, and so much more, while owning our major industries, hospitals, our media, and so much more. And, Republicans are all on board with this, pass huge sums of money for ICE, a paramilitary that roams our communities looking for people of color to arrest and deport. a Another huge fortune is for our military that is wasting money on outdated equipment, kicking out its best officers, ditching women, officers of color, and trans soldiers, then institute testosterone testing. None of that will improve our military, a boon for Russia, China, and North Korea!
We do have to stop this insanity, which in my view, for the past 60 years has mainly been Republican-generated. That in no way lets Democrats off the hook, because Dems have participated in some really bad go-alongs, but nothing like what Republicans have done and are now doing. The answer is absolutely not. How do overworked, exhausted people get to the truth if their regular media sources don't cover it?
Then, there's the fact that people want to belong to something. Many MAGAs are white evangelical christians whose pastors tell them that everyone who is not them is against god and will end up in hell and if they go along with THOSE folks, they will be in hell too. It's an old control trope used in many religions to keep "the faithful" in line and believing what they are told, no thinking or reasoning in volved or, HELL!
These are not adequate to explain all of what is going on with Trumplandia and MAGA right now, but it is some of it. To reach people who support Trumplandia is going to be far harder than anyone can imagine because they have also been groomed to blame others for their own decisions and for what is happening to them. I've been telling my husband for months how awful things will be. He hates Trump and the evil regime as much as I do, but he seems able to compartmentalize and sleep soundly most nights (he's 83, so I'm glad he can rest). I can't turn off my hatred and dread every night. Wishing that Trump will die does no good. He seems unbreakable. And even his death, as nice as that sounds to our ears, will not stop the grift, the cruelty and madness of the current regime.
This was an eye opener. Logically it was obvious that the cuts made and the big ugly bill would have far reaching consequences, but to see it laid as concise and clear as Norm provided gives a real insight to the consequences and how the dominos have/will fall.
