The step father of a friend, someone fascinated by history, once told me what he had learned about the Marie Antoinette quote. Who's to say whether it is true. Here's what he told me: When the palace baked bread or cakes, the ovens were lined with some kind of dough in order to soften the temperatures. When the baking was done, the ovens had to be cleaned and the dough lining the ovens scrapped off. The scrapings were known as cake, so whether it was Marie or someone else, saying "let them eat cake" was insulting, in other words let the peasants eat crumbs and bits and pieces.

Cranky Masshole's avatar

I’ve learned that the ovens were heated with wood. Once the wood was burned, they would flood the oven with the ‘cake’ that you spoke of, to gather all the ashes from the oven before baking.

This, I was told was ‘The Cake’ Marie Antoinette was referring to when she said that the peasants could Eat Cake!

150 years and lots of stories, who knows what is the truth?

Fuck her and tRump!

Jane Nordli Jessep's avatar

I really like this additional part of the oven story, makes the "eat cake" reference even more disgusting, let them eat wet ashes and crumbs. Yes, fuck her and the felon. May we be delivered from this hell sooner than later.

Oh, is this where we get "caked on" from? TIL!

That’s the best and most plausible explanation for the M.A. quote that I’ve read. Thanks.

Robot Bender's avatar

That's interesting. I didn't know that. TY

Actually, it was la brioche which was used and is very rich cake so it may be impossible to know the truth about who, if anybody, said it. It might just have been a propagandic attribution to Antoinette to help the revolution along.

I did a bit of research (yeah I’m a card-carrying nerd 🤓) and I included it in my response to Mary’s post 👇🏻

Yep, the whole grandiose and decadent Gatsby roaring twenties celebration at MAL was the mirror image of what actually happens in the roaring twenties 100 years ago. And as the Donald has repeatedly declared- “we’re in a new golden age” in America.

And it was also a huge collection 🖕🏼 to the vast majority of Americans, including the millions of cult followers. The brazen arrogance, vulgarity, and elitist “let them eat cake” symbolism was on full display for the whole world to see.

But lest we forget, the 1020’s was rapidly followed by the Great Depression which left millions of Americans standing in bread lines, in deep poverty for over 10 years.

So what’s next…?

“Marie Antoinette was convicted of high treason, conspiracy with foreign powers, and squandering the nation's finances. These charges stemmed from accusations that she plotted with Austria against France, secretly supplied military information to enemies, and was responsible for the monarchy's financial mismanagement through her extravagant lifestyle and gambling.”

“Marie Antoinette died by guillotine on October 16, 1793, after being convicted of treason by the Revolutionary Tribunal. She was executed publicly in Paris at the Place de la Révolution (now the Place de la Concorde) during the French Revolution”

(And Mary is right. There’s no actual evidence that Marie ever said “let them eat cake”. But it certainly is a legendary myth, and quite apropos!) 1.

But apparently she DID say this on the way to the chopping block- “Marie Antoinette's last words were a simple apology to her executioner: "Pardonnez-moi, monsieur. Je ne l'ai pas fait exprès," which translates to "Pardon me, sir, I did not do it on purpose". She said this after accidentally stepping on the executioner's foot on her way to the guillotine.” 2.

So. Time to hone le couteau?

It's another interesting take, and I like it. Kind of their equivalent to our ads using lies and false pictures to sway the people.

Lucy Conner's avatar

Marie Antoinette was not French and it was an arranged marriage. The French people didn't like her from the start (she was "foreign") and especially later, as the economy of France worsened.

Jane Nordli Jessep's avatar

I love this thread, so many curious and interesting thoughts being shared. Marie's mother was Empress Maria Theresa head of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Mozart as a child played at her palace, I believe it was called Schonbrunn Palace. Mozart was so taken, it is reported, by the young princess Maria, that as a seven year old asked her to marry him. So yes, she was not French, she was Austrian and had to marry Louis, who apparently was not all that taken with the princess. What a mess.

There was no indoor bathroom in the White House during “the Lincoln era”. Very few public buildings had indoor plumbing and people used commodes with chamber pots and privies (out houses). The man is an absolute moron. 🫩

His biggest insult is calling someone "low IQ." And he comes up with this nonsensical bullshit.

There were two on the second floor at that time, which I only know because I sought out the information when this marble monstrosity first came to light. There were probably others, but yeah, this was outhouse era.

All that white would make me dizzy. I hope nobody falls down in there, because let me tell you, he hates blood on his "beautiful marble floors."

Yes. he is a moron.

Jody Mendes's avatar

Thanks for the correction. I’ve seen photos now but absolutely nothing resembling the monstrosity djt has created. Indoor toilets were rare in the mid 19th century.

Hero of the week is Billie Eilish who shamed billionaire Zuckerberg at an awards ceremony, asking point blank why he & other billionaires don't give some of their money to people in need. And then she put her money where her mouth is, giving away $11.5 million of her wealth. https://www.bbc.com/news/videos/cdx4qpdvjjko

I think we should all refer to the ballroom as the Epstein Ballroom. Spread it far and wide.

James Rankin's avatar

And refer to those files as the Trump-Epstein Files.

E.C.'s avatar

That faux elegant marble bathroom is as stark and cold as Trump's heart. Unlike King Midas, Trump would be thrilled if he could turn Ivanka into a gold statue for the ballroom.

Scott Gilbert's avatar

The majority of the corporate donors to President Donald Trump’s ballroom are facing or have recently faced federal enforcement actions, so don't expect to hear much about them.

Douglas Paul Truhlar's avatar

Actually, I hope he does eat more cake. More cheeseburgers, more Big Macs, more fries, more everything. Encouraging him to clog up his arteries with beef tallow and let nature take its course, may be our only hope.

As a historical critique, the "let them eat cake" has always been misconstrued as a lack of care sentiment. What it actually meant was a lack of knowledge regarding basic things. As we all know, both cake and bread require flour. However, those raised in great privilege and wealth, have no need to know what makes either one, just that they can get either one whenever they want. Unlike the rest of us plebes.

No, the sentiment of having no care is better exemplified by Ebenezer Scrooge. When two gentlemen asked for a donation for the poor because the poor would rather die than go to the workhouse, Scrooge famously states, "If they would rather die... they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population," in response to a request for a donation for the poor. This shows not only a disdain for the poor, but also a lack of real knowledge of just how horrendous the conditions of the workhouse were.

That all said, certainly the subhumans occupying the administration have no care for either poor, or frankly, the rest of us. They're perfectly willing to allow us all to suffer just to get their way. Which, to me, makes them nothing more than wastes of DNA who are also oxygen thieves.

Looking at the bathroom and the rest of it. I don't understand why it is so ugly.

Jessica Rath's avatar

Because HE is so ugly. At least, Marie Antoinette was pretty. However, thinking of her demise -- maybe there is hope?

Looks very cold and slippery. Is that a metaphor? - and the window at toilet-seat level that looks out on the destruction of the White House? He is so far past parody that he leaves us speechless, but not without voice! Vote!

I think that’s exactly it. I find it hurts my eyes a little. I also think gold looks really tacky.

Peter Gugger's avatar

Is that photo actually of the renovation Mary is writing about? I suspect it’s a stock shot of a marble bathroom and is actually more tasteful than what Donald imagines Lincoln had.

Cyndy Bradfield's avatar

I saw a picture that was all green. Was that the old bathroom? Lots of handrails to protect from slipping.

Trump’s forebears were of course foreign as well but that wasn’t considered such a bad thing then as, apart from indigenous Americans, everyone else remembered they were also foreigners once.
