The step father of a friend, someone fascinated by history, once told me what he had learned about the Marie Antoinette quote. Who's to say whether it is true. Here's what he told me: When the palace baked bread or cakes, the ovens were lined with some kind of dough in order to soften the temperatures. When the baking was done, the ovens had to be cleaned and the dough lining the ovens scrapped off. The scrapings were known as cake, so whether it was Marie or someone else, saying "let them eat cake" was insulting, in other words let the peasants eat crumbs and bits and pieces.
I’ve learned that the ovens were heated with wood. Once the wood was burned, they would flood the oven with the ‘cake’ that you spoke of, to gather all the ashes from the oven before baking.
This, I was told was ‘The Cake’ Marie Antoinette was referring to when she said that the peasants could Eat Cake!

I really like this additional part of the oven story, makes the "eat cake" reference even more disgusting, let them eat wet ashes and crumbs. Yes, fuck her and the felon. May we be delivered from this hell sooner than later.

There was no indoor bathroom in the White House during “the Lincoln era”. Very few public buildings had indoor plumbing and people used commodes with chamber pots and privies (out houses). The man is an absolute moron.

When two gentlemen asked for a donation for the poor because the poor would rather die than go to the workhouse, Scrooge famously states, "If they would rather die... they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population," in response to a request for a donation for the poor. This shows not only a disdain for the poor, but also a lack of real knowledge of just how horrendous the conditions of the workhouse were.
