I will respectfully disagree Ruthe. The town in PA where my mother was from & the state of Ohio were 2 of the most racist places that I've lived. As an army brat I lived in Alabama, which was a different culture than the north. Up north racism seemed to be more hidden & seethed beneath the surface. ( the first time I heard overt racism explained as facts was in a Methodist church that we attended in the north.) The southern culture had a long running racism which resulted in the Civil Rights movement while we lived there. I will forever remember the black & white drinking fountains & bathrooms & that Huntsville cemented in their Big Springs Park Swimming Pool rather than allow black children to swim with us there.
When we moved to PA after my dad got out of career military, there was a big old rebel flag up at a family reunion of a a man that my mother was dating after my dad died. She promptly split up with him & was so shocked that she had no idea of the degree of racism that he espoused. There was not a POC to be found in that PA town & if anyone of color came into our town, people would stop & stare at them. These days these same folks are just "so worried about the southern borders" while they are experiencing the loss of generations through opiate ODs. In that town, I have heard Mexican people referred to as "those Spanish people." This would be why I left for the West Coast as soon as I became a nurse at 20.
We need to call and write Congress. We need to call our reps and write 1 letter but send it to as many we can afford time and money to do. Perhaps our Senators, too.
