Mike Johnson and the Republicans are in disarray after Democrat Tom Suozzi FLIPPED the seat formerly held by compulsive liar and right-wing fabulist George Santos. But it’s HOW Donald & Mike Johnson’s party lost that gives me hope for 2024! 👇
Let’s celebrate, shall we?
Last night, Tom Suozzi won the special election for the House seat in New York’s 3rd District that was vacated after George Santos was removed from the House of Representatives on December 5, 2023.
It’s not only the fact that Suozzi won that matters — although that alone is reason to celebrate. It’s what these data show that gives me hope:
A DEMOCRAT won the swingiest of New York swing districts by almost 8%. For context, Santos won the seat by 7.5% in 2022.
How Suozzi won is the real story, but I’m not seeing much about in the corporate media:
Undermining Three Key Republican Talking Points
The strategy Mike Johnson and the Republican Party employed to beat Suozzi was a preview of their playbook for 2024: The three main things they’re banking on are:
The “immigration crisis” (so-called by The New York Times which seems hell bent on getting Donald elected again) enraging voters…
Voters not caring about criminal activity, e.g. Donald’s four indictments, 91 criminal charges, and having been found liable for rape to the tune of an $83 million judgment.
Voters forgetting about abortion – the Dobbs decision and Republicans’ continuing attacks on reproductive rights
Is their plan working? HELL NO… and last night proves it.
Let’s begin with the immigration issue:
1. Republicans Lose on Immigration
Republicans hammered Suozzi’s campaign over the influx of migrants to New York City, tying him to their attacks on Biden – almost every single Republican ad focused on immigration.
The result? Voters didn’t buy it. And for good reason.
Anyone paying any attention can see there has been a good faith effort by Democrats to address the issue of immigration in Congress; it was Republicans who turned down the $118.28 billion bipartisan immigration bill, even though it included significant concessions to the Republican agenda.
Then, after not providing Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas the funding he needed to solve the problem, the Republican majority in the House voted to impeach him for not protecting the border. Worse, everyone knows this was entirely performative – the Senate won’t remove Mayorkas from power.
Thus, Republicans have accomplished nothing, which seems to have become their governing policy.
Suozzi, like many other Democrats in Congress, confronted the immigration issue head-on, instead of running away from it. This resonated with voters.
2. Voters Run Away from a Criminally-indicted Candidate
After George Santos embarrassing tenure, replete with lies, extremism, and serious allegations of fraud (all supported by his Republican colleagues until they realized Santos was too much of an albatross around their necks), voters resoundingly rejected the Republican Party’s candidate in favor of a clean slate.
Outside of the Republican base, voters are clearly tired of a party that continues to tie itself to, and subjugate itself to, a pathetic con-man buffoon, who is facing numerous federal indictments over his alleged fraud and crimes against his own country.
The independent swing voters who rejected Santos’ party are exactly the kinds of voters who will abandon Donald, if we can reach them – since the corporate media seems to abdicate its responsibility to the American people.
3. Abortion
The GOP largely ran away from the SCOTUS decision that took away fundamental human rights from half of the citizens of this country – even as they continue to quietly double down at the state level.
Tom Suozzi was having none of it. At every opportunity, he reminded voters in his district that Republicans were more than happy to take away their rights.
Every single Democrat across the country should follow suit.
As Steve Israel, the former Congressman who once held the same Congressional seat Suozzi now holds, said,
"It's a very interesting lesson to Democrats that you can escape your opponent's attacks on immigration by not only leaning into the issue, but doubling down on it…
“Instead of trying to pivot around the issue, he charged into it.”
Mike Johnson’s Pathetic Response
You know how to tell that Republicans are terrified by Suozzi’s victory in New York last night? Mike Johnson took to the airwaves today to downplay it:
"The result last night is not something, in my view, that Democrats should celebrate too much," Johnson said at his news conference while standing next to Republican leaders of his vanishing majority.
In what can only be seen as a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, Johnson blamed the results of NY-03 on everything from Suozzi’s being a moderate, to his name recognition, and to the winter “storm” (I live here—we barely had 3 inches) that didn’t keep Democrats from voting.
"There are a lot of factors that is in no way a bellwether of what's going to happen this fall," Johnson said, desperately hoping it’s true. (It’s not.)
This is the Speaker who just hours ago claimed that Russia’s plans to launch nuclear weapons into space is not cause for “public alarm.”
Tip: Whatever Mike Johnson says, believe the opposite.
But despite his weak attempts at putting a good face on the loss, things are even worse for Johnson… and Donald.
While reporting from Mazi Pilip’s headquarters during the special election, one CNN reporter said that at least two voters who supported Donald in 2016 voted for the Democrat in the special election. Why? “Because his message of bipartisanship and the fact that House Republicans have really struggled to pass legislation over the last couple of weeks.”
In other words, voters are crossing party lines in the Democrats’ favor because Republicans cannot govern if their lives depended on it and, more importantly, they are not interested in governing. They are failing with voters, and those voters are staring to pay attention.
THIS is something to celebrate. 🥂
How We Beat Mike Johnson & Donald’s Party
The data from Suozzi’s victory shine a light on what drives these crucial swing voters: It’s the fear that Republicans – especially Donald – will use lies, corruption, and abuse of power to take away our rights and our democracy – not for any ideological reason, but simply for his personal gain.
And the corporate media is failing to get out the word. So I have a plan.
Readers of my Substack know I’ve announced a tour designed to reach swing voters like the ones who flipped in New York and encourage them to get to the polls.
The key here is you. The more support I get from you, the more people I can reach with the truth.👇

NY3 is just another example of just how deep the shit is that Republicans are in. They fucked up royally on immigration when they blew up the best deal they were ever going to see. They fucked up when they doubled down on Dobbs. They fucked up when they gave total fealty to the fraudulent rapist that leads their cult. November could be a rout.
