May I offer a suggestion? Get out of your comfort zone. SEE who is most in need around you. Help their situation. This movement and pushback will start, grow and end locally. Insist your politicians do the right thing and oppose this stuff. Let them know they risk losing their seat if they don't. Try connecting with local folks through various forums who share your views. Indivisible.org has many activists holding their feet to the fire in almost every area. People ARE standing up showing their great numbers!
The part most people don't understand is, threatening them with losing their seat is not going to matter. The midterms are 2 years away, and at the pace this is moving, this democracy won't make it another couple of weeks. It only took Hitler 53 days once he was in office to seize total control. Trump has already been in office almost that long, and this runaway train is going at breakneck speed. They've had this planned for at least several years now, and are "this close" to pulling it off, so they are NOT going to slow down now. Shock and awe....chaos and speed...are what they have going for them. They've already got control of all the government systems, and can shut down the military and other government systems in a few minutes, and everything will come to a standstill. All they need then is their "Reichstag moment"...something that they can declare is an "emergency".... to declare martial law, which will suspend the laws AND the Constitution, and they will go about their merry way imposing their will on us. We don't have time for niceties like midterm elections anymore. There will be no more elections if these guys get their way. This is an all-hands-on-deck, 5-alarm fire.

It starts on the super local level. If you're in the US, what town/county. Write to those state reps/senators. (Not just the ones in DC.) If you're a parent, volunteer at the schools, get involved with the PTO. Help clear wishlists. Think of where you buy from.

My art making is crucial self care right now as are thank you notes and acts of generosity and reaching out. In the midst of this I had emergency surgery this week and expressed concerns about Medicare not paying and subsequently being held responsible for it which would likely bankrupt me. My surgeon tried to be reassuring as did my Senator’s staffer when asked similar questions. I’m weary of all the well meaning people who think this or that won’t happen (disappearance of Soc. Security, Medicare, SNAP, Medicaid,etc) and my response is” I understand that what you are saying is the conventional wisdom but THESE ARE NOT conventional times. Please wake up, stand up and fight.”
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how my activism with others has been an antidote for the terror. While laid up, I cannot exercise yet or protest like I have both of which are bedrock for my emotional regulation. Naturally I m feeling more disregulated. Think also of the Birmingham Bus Boycott in Alabama. Those black folks had to STILL get to work & home, kids to school, buy groceries, etc. They coordinated, as the boycott lasted months. The three Democrats are more known for their speaking abilities than their courage. Each of the three had some signal successes, but each was too accomadating to the Republican opposition.

Thanks Jason and right on point. I've been calling/emailing my senators, congressman, state AG every week. Sometimes several times a week. We as citizens need to keep our foot on the gas pedal and not let up. Our former presidents need to step up and defend democracy and the citizens who at one time or twice placed their trust in them. They too have children and grandchildren.

I read somewhere or heard it on npr that historically, former presidents do not criticize the new administration…🙄 but more than waiting to be called on, what I am waiting for is to see massive waves of people who VOTED FOR him organically protesting out in the streets for having lost their jobs, for getting their health benefits cut, their kids health care discontinued, their social security benefits cut, their education funds cut or suspended, their rights stripped as if they thought he would care for them. What about firefighters, Veterans - disabled or not, federal workers, why are they not massively protesting everywhere ?

They are the 'nuclear option' - the big guns to be used in the final assault. We are on the verge of anarchy and any bold move must be timed to achieve its mission without a lot of collateral damage. Remember the Lt. Calley defense in Vietnam: "We had to destroy the village to save it." The former Presidents acutely know how fragile the government is and the consequences of too many bulls in the China shop.
I’m get the idea of timing, but when democracy is on life support, waiting for the ‘right moment’ can turn into waiting too long. The former presidents may be the ‘nuclear option,’ but silence isn’t strategy, it’s surrender. If they know how fragile the government is, all the more reason to reinforce it now, not after the damage is irreversible. Bold action must be timed, yes, but it must also happen. The question is, will they act before it’s too late?
These guys are experienced and savvy. They also are surrounded by some of the best minds in the world. There will be only one chance and it has to be swift and sure. We are at war. It takes time to gather forces and devise strategies. I am reminded of Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War where he had to balance military force against national unity. It is a delicate juggling act and you can be sure the best minds are fully engaged.

We, in Canada, are getting real about what to do. I’m grateful for you Mary and for those showing up here. Me, too on Social Security, Medicare, live alone, and am a fiber artist, a maker. My art making is crucial self care right now as are thank you notes and acts of generosity and reaching out. In the midst of this I had emergency surgery this week and expressed concerns about Medicare not paying and subsequently being held responsible for it which would likely bankrupt me. My surgeon tried to be reassuring as did my Senator’s staffer when asked similar questions. I’m weary of all the well meaning people who think this or that won’t happen (disappearance of Soc. Security, Medicare, SNAP, Medicaid,etc) and my response is” I understand that what you are saying is the conventional wisdom but THESE ARE NOT conventional times. Please wake up, stand up and fight.”
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how my activism with others has been an antidote for the terror. While laid up, I cannot exercise yet or protest like I have both of which are bedrock for my emotional regulation. Naturally I m feeling more disregulated.
