I’ll have a lot to say about the hearing tomorrow but after live streaming and doing commentary and analysis with my extraordinary panel for over four hours I kind of need to take the night off.
You can watch the whole thing on YouTube here. I promise, it’s worth the time.
Patti Rothberg’s “Between the 1 and the 9” and Patty Griffin’s “Living with Ghosts” both came out in 1996. That’s where the similarities end but because I purchased them at the same time (at the Tower Records on the Upper West Side, of course) and listened to them almost constantly, they will always be inextricably linked for me. Although my experience with Rothberg’s and Griffin’s music was very different, “Between the 1 and the 9” was one of my favorite albums to at the time—it’s just a really fun listen. That’s not to say it’s superficial pop—Rothberg’s song range from the fierce to the doubting, to the sardonic, and even philosophical.
I’m not sure why this album didn’t get more play but it was a pretty crowded field with the likes of Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette, and Sheryl Crow all in ascendance. My second favorite song on the album is “Looking for a Girl.” No matter how I’m feeling it brings me back to that sun-drenched spring on the Upper West Side which at the moment feels several lifetimes ago.
My favorite song on the album is “It’s Alright” and it is also one of my favorite songs period. It’s a lyrical, uncomplicated song that, though mournful, is also clear-eyed and accepting. I absolutely love it.
More tomorrow.

I liked your coverage of today's 1/6 hearing.
How delicious that the 'crowded field' was so full of such talented women! What a joy for the ears. Big thanks for the reminder Mary.
