The first time we picked a Good Human it was a tie between Jamie Raskin and Rep. Liz Cheney. This time he won with a commanding 43% of the vote.
In the words of those who voted for him, Rep. Raskin’s “skills are so appropriate for this moment. As he processes his own tragic emotional loss, he has, at the same time, become an important voice in setting our struggling democracy back on track.”
He is “a powerful voice for Democracy. Unquestionably a hero of our times.”
“He overcame personal tragedy to combat national evil.”
“[N]o one has a bigger heart for helping people.”
Rep. Raskin’s beloved son, Tommy, died on December 31, 2020. Tommy and his father shared a belief in the power of American democracy and the importance of upholding our country’s Constitution. Astonishingly, despite his personal tragedies, Raskin still volunteered to be a member of Select Committee on the January 6 attack.
In the face of relentless and increasing assaults on our democracy, people like Jamie Raskin give me hope. His passionate defense of America bolsters my own commitment to stay in the fight no matter how challenging it can be sometimes. It is impossible for me to put into words how much I respect this extraordinary man.
Runner-Up
Dr. Anthony Fauci, who still does his job in the face of the bizarre and unreasonable opposition and attacks from the Right, came in second.
“I loved seeing Fauci giving Rand Paul a dose of his own bullshit this past week. Then the cherry on top of the bullshit was when Fauci called him a ‘moron’ on a hot mic.”
“He still doesn’t waver, even with all the negativity he is bombarded with!”
“He stands with the truth despite those of the Republican Party who are attempting to discredit his knowledge and experience. This as he devotes himself in an attempt to stop the horrific number of deaths caused by COVID-19.”
Honorable Mentions
E. Jean Carroll, whom I’m proud to call my friend, got votes for “bravely accusing a sex offender—who is seemingly above the law—at great personal exposure & cost.” I would add that E. Jean’s unrelenting pursuit of justice should be an example to all of us. My admiration for her is boundless.
Joe Biden received votes for “doing everything he can on Voting Rights legislation despite the irresponsible behavior of some in the Democratic Party—all without the support of MSM and half of the American people— [yet] still maintaining the dignity of the Presidency, his own personal integrity and optimism hoping for successful results to protect our freedoms & democracy!” I totally concur.
Tommy would be so so proud of his dad.
They all deserve our respect and celebration, for sure. I always want to nominate Glenn Kirschner as well, and Neal Katyal, who make legal issues so clear. Both are calling for more aggressive action by the DOJ, which also takes great courage. I'd like things to happen that would cause us to nominate Merrick Garland. I hope these things are going on behind the scenes. Fani Willis in Georgia and Letitia James in New York always deserve praise as well. These are ongoing legal soldiers. And I'd also like to see some better colleagues for the liberals on the Supremes. They need help.
