Biblical Justice & Social Justice
Is there a difference?
Selling a human being. Abusing a child. Stealing from a widow. Most, if not all of us, would agree that using force or fraud to exploit the vulnerable is evil. We carry within us an innate sense of right and wrong, a conviction that oppressors should be punished and the weak protected. We want justice.
Justice in its simplest form, means to set things right. Yet, how do we know what is right? Who defines “right”? Is it society-at-large or the culture we live in? Is there a moral law that we inherently know to follow?
BIBLICAL JUSTICE
As Christ-followers, the answer is simple. Our sense of justice is imparted to us by our Creator God. He is loving, kind, and merciful and He is also righteous, holy, and just.
“The Rock, His work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.” (Deuteronomy 32:4).
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.” (Psalm 89:14).
God is just. It is part of His character, which means He is always just. He cannot be unjust, and He defines and sets the standard for justice.
We hear that God is love and God is holy more often than we hear that God is just. And we may readily agree that God sets the standard for love and holiness, but do we understand that He also sets the standard for justice? Pursuing biblical justice means we follow God’s way to make right that which is wrong, and we look to Scripture to define what is “right”.
We do not have to look far to see that Jesus is our standard of righteousness. Jesus Christ lived a perfect, sinless life, died a sacrificial death and rose again to make right that which was wrong. It is because of Jesus and His work on the Cross that we can be justified and made right with God. And Jesus also demonstrates a beautiful example for us to follow in the New Testament as one who cared for the outcast and reached out with compassion to help those most often overlooked. Jesus pursued justice. He physically and spiritually rescued those in need. Healing the leper in Matthew 8 and caring for the woman caught in adultery in John 8 are just a few examples.
As we look at the life of Jesus and the mandate given throughout Scripture, it is clear that Christ-followers are called to “do justice”. We are called to take action and confront evil, to care for the vulnerable, and to make right that which is wrong. This mandate is not new. It is not a cultural fad or something that is simply a trend in today’s society. Throughout the Old and New Testament, our call to do justice is clear.
“Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute,” (Psalm 82:3).
“Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, and please the widow’s cause,” (Isaiah 1:17).
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8).
“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others,” (Luke 11:42).
SOCIAL JUSTICE
Social justice is a common term used today. A brief online search will uncover varying definitions of what it means. One definition says social justice is “promoting a just society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity”. On one hand that sounds fine, but looking deeper, it is rather vague and can lead to many different conclusions about what justice really looks like.
In contrast to social justice, which focuses on a temporal view of addressing injustices in society, biblical justice starts with the eternal in mind. It starts by seeing people as God sees them – recognizing that we are all created in the image of God. And it is incumbent upon Christ-followers to pursue physical and spiritual freedom for the oppressed so others can also become what God created them to be. If we have experienced freedom, how can we not pursue freedom on behalf of others?
As the Church, we may partner with those doing the work of social justice in our communities, but let us not be confused about our ultimate mission. Our mission is not about picking up another cause because it sounds appealing and makes us look good. Our mission is about fully embracing the cause of Christ. One day there will be perfect justice, carried out by a perfectly holy and just God. In the meantime, evil is pervasive throughout our world. Children are sold into sex slavery. The poor are beaten and forced to work without pay. Human trafficking or modern-day slavery continues in every country, city, and community. There are more than 35 million slaves in the world today, more than at any other time in history.
Can we, the Church, lead the way and pursue justice on behalf of the oppressed, the widow, the orphan, and the enslaved? If we know the One who is completely just, should we not lead the charge? YES!
Fueled by the compassion of Christ, we engage in issues of injustice – protecting the vulnerable, fighting for those held in oppression, walking alongside the wounded and pointing them to the One who heals, restores and redeems.
Pursuing justice starts and continues with a foundation of prayer, because we know it is His battle not our own. It involves time and sacrifice. It means stepping out of our comfort zone and persevering with patience. It means walking in wisdom and not jumping in haphazardly or foolishly. Our just God leads and we follow as He empowers us through the Holy Spirit. So, let’s go. Let’s engage in the fight for biblical justice.
On the morning of October 7, 2023, Hamas led a simultaneous wave of assaults on Israeli civilian communities and military posts. The dawn attack began when Hamas launched over 5,000 rockets from Gaza into Israel, then used these strategic barrages as cover to breach the border. In this massive surprise onslaught on southern Israel, Hamas terrorists committed unfathomable atrocities, including widespread sexual violence against women, that have reverberated globally.
The attacks claimed the lives of more than 1,194 individuals, with 800 of the bodies confirmed as civilians. They left over 4,834 people wounded and resulted in more than 243 being taken hostage. Additionally, some bodies remain unidentified due to substantial mutilation.
Since October 7th, at least 21 hostages were murdered by Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad, 3 hostages were released by the IDF, and 111 hostages were released in negotiations. 30 kidnap survivor women have endured sexual abuse by their captors. 134 people are still being held hostage, about 30 of them are dead, and their bodies remain captive.

Alabama Court Ruling That Frozen Embryos Are Children and Its Impact on the Future of IVF Treatment

When the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos should be considered children and that people can be held legally responsible for destroying them, the decision reverberated across the country. It was also a decision that could have a widespread chilling effect on the use of fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), says Boston University School of Law Professor Nicole Huberfeld.
The decision, released Friday, February 16, stems from an unusual set of cases, says Huberfeld, the Edward R. Utley Professor of Health Law and codirector of the University’s Program on Reproductive Justice. The ruling follows two lawsuits filed by three sets of parents who underwent IVF procedures to have babies and then opted to have the remaining embryos frozen.
They allege that in 2020, a patient at the Mobile, Ala., hospital where the frozen embryos were being stored, walked into the fertility clinic through an “unsecured doorway” and removed several embryos from the cryogenic nursery, the state’s Supreme Court ruling said. The patient’s hand was “freeze-burned” by the extremely low temperatures the embryos were stored at, and the patient dropped the containers on the floor, destroying the embryos within, according to the ruling.
The parents sued for wrongful death, a claim that a lower court initially rejected. The state Supreme Court’s stunning reversal holds that those frozen embryos were children, and they are covered under Alabama’s Wrongful Death of a Minor law.
“This decision, without any [intervening] action on the part of the Alabama legislature, will make it much harder for people to make choices about discarding the frozen embryos—which, to be clear, are just a mass of cells,” Huberfeld says. “We’re talking about something the size of a freckle.”
The wrongful death law this court’s decision rests on predates the US Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned half a century of precedent by ruling that the US Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. But Dobbs is not absent from the story here, Huberfeld says—the decision made highly restrictive abortion laws enforceable in their respective states. Before Dobbs, these laws were on the books, but unenforceable.
The court’s decision, rooted as it is in Alabama statute and its constitution, isn’t one that has a direct impact in any other state, Huberfeld says. But, with a handful of other states across the country that have laws on the books defining personhood as beginning at fertilization, it could set a precedent that others would follow.
“This decision looks narrow, but it is actually a decision that may influence other state supreme courts that have similar language about fetal life and their constitutions and laws,” Huberfeld notes.
And indeed, the ruling is already casting a shadow over assisted reproductive procedures in Alabama. On Wednesday, the University of Alabama at Birmingham health system—the state’s largest hospital system—announced it would pause IVF treatments while hospital officials evaluate whether its patients undergoing IVF or doctors performing the treatments could face criminal charges or punitive damages. On Thursday, officials from two more healthcare facilities, Alabama Fertility Services and the Center for Reproductive Medicine at Mobile Infirmary, announced they would do the same.
IVF treatment is an emotionally and physically exhausting process by which multiple eggs are harvested from a person’s ovaries, fertilized with sperm externally, and implanted in the uterus to create a pregnancy. In most cases, doctors create more embryos than they implant; patients store those additional embryos in liquid nitrogen for future use, donation, or destruction.
“I think if we look backwards as to how that process works, [this decision] will probably make it harder for people to have successful IVF,” Huberfeld says. “It is very difficult on the body to produce the eggs, and so people try not to do that more than one time. The goal is usually to extract more than one egg at a time. Now, people may be facing a situation in which they create fewer embryos or go through that process more than once.”
Nationally, just over 2 percent of infants are conceived using IVF or another type of assisted reproductive technology (ART), according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2021, the most recent year for which data are available, about a quarter of all ART cycles resulted in a live birth, and about a half were “egg or embryo banking cycles,” in which all resulting eggs or embryos were frozen for future use.
Alabama’s Supreme Court ruling imperils those extra frozen embryos, as well as the people who choose IVF or other assisted fertilization—a population that’s disproportionately composed of same-sex couples and older people.
“A decision like this makes it harder for people who are already vulnerable to be able to access the care that they need to create families,” Huberfeld says.

Biblical Justice & Social Justice
Is there a difference?
Selling a human being. Abusing a child. Stealing from a widow. Most, if not all of us, would agree that using force or fraud to exploit the vulnerable is evil. We carry within us an innate sense of right and wrong, a conviction that oppressors should be punished and the weak protected. We want justice.
Justice in its simplest form, means to set things right. Yet, how do we know what is right? Who defines “right”? Is it society-at-large or the culture we live in? Is there a moral law that we inherently know to follow?
BIBLICAL JUSTICE
As Christ-followers, the answer is simple. Our sense of justice is imparted to us by our Creator God. He is loving, kind, and merciful and He is also righteous, holy, and just.
“The Rock, His work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.” (Deuteronomy 32:4).
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.” (Psalm 89:14).
God is just. It is part of His character, which means He is always just. He cannot be unjust, and He defines and sets the standard for justice.
We hear that God is love and God is holy more often than we hear that God is just. And we may readily agree that God sets the standard for love and holiness, but do we understand that He also sets the standard for justice? Pursuing biblical justice means we follow God’s way to make right that which is wrong, and we look to Scripture to define what is “right”.
We do not have to look far to see that Jesus is our standard of righteousness. Jesus Christ lived a perfect, sinless life, died a sacrificial death and rose again to make right that which was wrong. It is because of Jesus and His work on the Cross that we can be justified and made right with God. And Jesus also demonstrates a beautiful example for us to follow in the New Testament as one who cared for the outcast and reached out with compassion to help those most often overlooked. Jesus pursued justice. He physically and spiritually rescued those in need. Healing the leper in Matthew 8 and caring for the woman caught in adultery in John 8 are just a few examples.
As we look at the life of Jesus and the mandate given throughout Scripture, it is clear that Christ-followers are called to “do justice”. We are called to take action and confront evil, to care for the vulnerable, and to make right that which is wrong. This mandate is not new. It is not a cultural fad or something that is simply a trend in today’s society. Throughout the Old and New Testament, our call to do justice is clear.
“Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute,” (Psalm 82:3).
“Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, and please the widow’s cause,” (Isaiah 1:17).
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8).
“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others,” (Luke 11:42).
SOCIAL JUSTICE
Social justice is a common term used today. A brief online search will uncover varying definitions of what it means. One definition says social justice is “promoting a just society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity”. On one hand that sounds fine, but looking deeper, it is rather vague and can lead to many different conclusions about what justice really looks like.
In contrast to social justice, which focuses on a temporal view of addressing injustices in society, biblical justice starts with the eternal in mind. It starts by seeing people as God sees them – recognizing that we are all created in the image of God. And it is incumbent upon Christ-followers to pursue physical and spiritual freedom for the oppressed so others can also become what God created them to be. If we have experienced freedom, how can we not pursue freedom on behalf of others?
As the Church, we may partner with those doing the work of social justice in our communities, but let us not be confused about our ultimate mission. Our mission is not about picking up another cause because it sounds appealing and makes us look good. Our mission is about fully embracing the cause of Christ. The poor are beaten and forced to work without pay. Human trafficking or modern-day slavery continues in every country, city, and community. There are more than 35 million slaves in the world today, more than at any other time in history.
Can we, the Church, lead the way and pursue justice on behalf of the oppressed, the widow, the orphan, and the enslaved? If we know the One who is completely just, should we not lead the charge? YES!
Fueled by the compassion of Christ, we engage in issues of injustice – protecting the vulnerable, fighting for those held in oppression, walking alongside the wounded and pointing them to the One who heals, restores and redeems.
Pursuing justice starts and continues with a foundation of prayer, because we know it is His battle not our own. It involves time and sacrifice. It means stepping out of our comfort zone and persevering with patience. It means walking in wisdom and not jumping in haphazardly or foolishly. Our just God leads and we follow as He empowers us through the Holy Spirit. So, let’s go. Let’s engage in the fight for biblical justice.

On the morning of October 7, 2023, Hamas led a simultaneous wave of assaults on Israeli civilian communities and military posts. The dawn attack began when Hamas launched over 5,000 rockets from Gaza into Israel, then used these strategic barrages as cover to breach the border. In this massive surprise onslaught on southern Israel, Hamas terrorists committed unfathomable atrocities, including widespread sexual violence against women, that have reverberated globally.
The attacks claimed the lives of more than 1,194 individuals, with 800 of the bodies confirmed as civilians. They left over 4,834 people wounded and resulted in more than 243 being taken hostage. Additionally, some bodies remain unidentified due to substantial mutilation.
Since October 7th, at least 21 hostages were murdered by Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad, 3 hostages were released by the IDF, and 111 hostages were released in negotiations. 30 kidnap survivor women have endured sexual abuse by their captors. 134 people are still being held hostage, about 30 of them are dead, and their bodies remain captive.

Alabama Court Ruling That Frozen Embryos Are Children and Its Impact on the Future of IVF Treatment

When the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos should be considered children and that people can be held legally responsible for destroying them, the decision reverberated across the country. It was also a decision that could have a widespread chilling effect on the use of fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), says Boston University School of Law Professor Nicole Huberfeld.
The decision, released Friday, February 16, stems from an unusual set of cases, says Huberfeld, the Edward R. Utley Professor of Health Law and codirector of the University’s Program on Reproductive Justice. The ruling follows two lawsuits filed by three sets of parents who underwent IVF procedures to have babies and then opted to have the remaining embryos frozen.
They allege that in 2020, a patient at the Mobile, Ala., hospital where the frozen embryos were being stored, walked into the fertility clinic through an “unsecured doorway” and removed several embryos from the cryogenic nursery, the state’s Supreme Court ruling said. The patient’s hand was “freeze-burned” by the extremely low temperatures the embryos were stored at, and the patient dropped the containers on the floor, destroying the embryos within, according to the ruling.
The parents sued for wrongful death, a claim that a lower court initially rejected. The state Supreme Court’s stunning reversal holds that those frozen embryos were children, and they are covered under Alabama’s Wrongful Death of a Minor law.
“This decision, without any [intervening] action on the part of the Alabama legislature, will make it much harder for people to make choices about discarding the frozen embryos—which, to be clear, are just a mass of cells,” Huberfeld says. “We’re talking about something the size of a freckle.”
The wrongful death law this court’s decision rests on predates the US Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned half a century of precedent by ruling that the US Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. But Dobbs is not absent from the story here, Huberfeld says—the decision made highly restrictive abortion laws enforceable in their respective states. Before Dobbs, these laws were on the books, but unenforceable.
The court’s decision, rooted as it is in Alabama statute and its constitution, isn’t one that has a direct impact in any other state, Huberfeld says. But, with a handful of other states across the country that have laws on the books defining personhood as beginning at fertilization, it could set a precedent that others would follow.
“This decision looks narrow, but it is actually a decision that may influence other state supreme courts that have similar language about fetal life and their constitutions and laws,” Huberfeld notes.
And indeed, the ruling is already casting a shadow over assisted reproductive procedures in Alabama. On Wednesday, the University of Alabama at Birmingham health system—the state’s largest hospital system—announced it would pause IVF treatments while hospital officials evaluate whether its patients undergoing IVF or doctors performing the treatments could face criminal charges or punitive damages. On Thursday, officials from two more healthcare facilities, Alabama Fertility Services and the Center for Reproductive Medicine at Mobile Infirmary, announced they would do the same.
IVF treatment is an emotionally and physically exhausting process by which multiple eggs are harvested from a person’s ovaries, fertilized with sperm externally, and implanted in the uterus to create a pregnancy. In most cases, doctors create more embryos than they implant; patients store those additional embryos in liquid nitrogen for future use, donation, or destruction.
“I think if we look backwards as to how that process works, [this decision] will probably make it harder for people to have successful IVF,” Huberfeld says. “It is very difficult on the body to produce the eggs, and so people try not to do that more than one time. The goal is usually to extract more than one egg at a time. Now, people may be facing a situation in which they create fewer embryos or go through that process more than once.”
Nationally, just over 2 percent of infants are conceived using IVF or another type of assisted reproductive technology (ART), according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2021, the most recent year for which data are available, about a quarter of all ART cycles resulted in a live birth, and about a half were “egg or embryo banking cycles,” in which all resulting eggs or embryos were frozen for future use.
Alabama’s Supreme Court ruling imperils those extra frozen embryos, as well as the people who choose IVF or other assisted fertilization—a population that’s disproportionately composed of same-sex couples and older people.
“A decision like this makes it harder for people who are already vulnerable to be able to access the care that they need to create families,” Huberfeld says.
