Canada, like the UK, has a Parliamentary system. This means that the Prime Minister (not President) is directly accountable to all MPs every week through questions from backbenchers and Opposition Leaders. The process is controlled by the Speaker of the House of Commons. This interrogation is a weekly test of mental competence, quick thinking, and knowledge of government and public affairs. Trump indulges in long rambling speeches to Congress without any challenge. He could never survive one Prime Minister's Questions. Under Parliamentary democracy, Trump would be defeated by elected members with a month, with a General Election following. Judges are not political appointees. American democracy and a largely supine judiciary has resulted in the US, and the world, being locked in tandem with a tyrant for 4 years. Something to consider, American neighbours.

In Québec, provincial laws (Bill 96) take it a step further, requiring French text to be prominent and mandating that instruction manuals, warranties, and commercial digital collateral be available in French. FRENCH must precede English translation on all packaged goods sold within Québec! Any generic or descriptive terms embedded within a trademark must also include a visible French translation on the packaging. Instruction manuals, warranties, and digital collateral accompanying the product must also comply with these French-language standards. (Additionally, any imported package goods from the U.S. must also prominently display a product's METRIC weight/measurements—not just Imperial; we use a hybrid of Metric and Imperial in Canada.)
The U.S. has long complained that these packaging rules, alongside new digital regulations (like Quebec's Bill 109) that force American streaming services to fund and promote French-language content, are "trade barriers" that cost U.S. companies time and money.
𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 what the U.S. administration tried to sneak into the agreement at the last moment—despite it being Canadian LAW for all consumer goods (and digital media) to bear English and French languages (and Metric) on packaging! They wanted to skip the French translation, to export consumer goods—including food and cosmetics, into Canada without French translation on the packaging.
Doing so negates the rights of unilingual Francophones (who can't read or understand English) and would erode the importance of French culture in Canada.
To Americans, it looks like an administrative headache over labels.
Forcing Canada to accept U.S. imports without French translations or digital media protections actively strips unilingual Canadian citizens of their legal right to read ingredients, warning labels, and operating manuals in their own language.
American companies already willingly adapt their products with Spanish text to capture the U.S. consumer market. Expecting Canada to dismantle its own federal laws and constitutional rights just to save U.S. exporters a re-design fee was a complete no-go.
Spanish packaging in the U.S. is almost entirely driven by market-capitalism to capture a consumer demographic.

Canada, like the UK, has a Parliamentary system. This means that the Prime Minister (not President) is directly accountable to all MPs every week through questions from backbenchers and Opposition Leaders. The process is controlled by the Speaker of the House of Commons. This interrogation is a weekly test of mental competence, quick thinking, and knowledge of government and public affairs. Trump indulges in long rambling speeches to Congress without any challenge. He could never survive one Prime Minister's Questions. Under Parliamentary democracy, Trump would be defeated by elected members with a month, with a General Election following. Judges are not political appointees. American democracy and a largely supine judiciary has resulted in the US, and the world, being locked in tandem with a tyrant for 4 years. Something to consider, American neighbours.

I would also point out that in Canada, Cabinet Ministers, though appointed by the Prime Minister, come from elected Members of Parliament. They remain accountable to their constituents and must be elected by the people first.

In my area 12 pks of soft drinks list at $11.99, usually on sale for buy 3 get 3 free, so that's about $6.00 each. We used to be able to get the same thing for $3.00 or less most of the time, pre-pandemic.

Right now for me, I gage national and international events as to how they hurt or help Trump and MAGA primarily, and the American people or the people of the world secondarily. Because I know that the better the chances of overturning this monster, or the more quickly it can happen, the better for us all in the longer run. So I applaud this development - I want to see it grow like a cancer through the body of MAGA. I would like to see Canada somehow work to undermine the Trump administration in any way it can. Maybe tamper with the upcoming election in a legal way? Send money to blue candidates? Fund some great attack ads? We need all the help we can get.
I just saw our proposal by Bernie Sanders. He proposes to charge the 938 billionaires in the US 5% tax. That would eliminate your debt as well as pay for I believe he said Medicaid and Medicare and increase salaries for nurses and teachers.
I wish Bernie had the teeth to make it happen. He can propose all he wants. But it takes a Democrat controlled Congress to create such a bill, whihc we currently do not have but may have this November. Even then Trump will veto, which takes a 2/3 vote to override - something that will never happen. And even if it miraculously passed - then the lawsuits will begin. And if one makes it to the Supreme Court, it will certainly be overturned there with the right wing majority enjoyed in that body. And that in a nutsheel is what has happened to our government - the far right has a stranglehold on it that may never be overcome, or if it is overcome it will take a long time.

Probably wouldn't need rocks in the canoe in Lake Superior. It's one hell of a lake/ocean, and it does not take much for it to roar. That's why there have been so many terrible shipping accidents on it. When ships go down in it, there are no survivors. It's a very mighty lake: very cold, very deep, and can have storms come up in a hot minute. Trump would do very well there. But my God, is it beautiful; everyone from Michigan and Canada have great respect for its power, force, majesty, and potential deadliness. I have absolutely no doubt that DT could not find it on a map.

Among other falsehoods, Canada is actually a major EXPORTER of oil, gas, and electricity and much of that exported power is keeping the lights on in the north eastern US. Canada has also created more jobs recently than the US despite having a much smaller economy.

2. 𝙉𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙞𝙢𝙤 𝙎𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙧𝙨 𝙑𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚. The facility specializes in complex residential and memory care—24/7 care for those with Alzheimer's and dementia.
3. A "𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨" is a very common, dignified phrasing used in obituaries for progressive, neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease.
4. Donations requested in lieu of flowers to 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙡𝙯𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝘽.𝘾.
Having that kind of deeply personal, front-row seat to a parent's cognitive decline certainly shapes a person's perspective, patience, and strategy when dealing with similar behavioural patterns in the public eye. Prime Minister Carney knows how this movie will end, soon.

I’m not a great one for organizing campaigns but anyway I went ahead and wrote my bit. Here’s what I wrote to him. I’m sure he’ll be thrilled.
Mr. President:
Now that you are seeking to put your name on everything everywhere —with America being a synonym for your name in your view— we would like you to change the name of the Reflecting Pool. You could call it the Trump Pool or the America Pool: Those two names of course would be synonymous in your opinion. Surely it’s imperative that you overlook no opportunity to advance your standing in the eyes of posterity.

In another way of saying things, the people working under Mary’s uncle could probably use some support. He is posting all kinds of social media posts which would tend to indicate he is flying off the rails mentally and psychologically; and meanwhile, the people working for him are doing backwards some results trying to please the guy. I just listened to Jim Acosta, who repeated a name they are they have coined for Howard Lutnick in Canada. It is a really gross name.
What is going on in the White House these days? I’m trying to read Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan‘s account of what is happening in there. It is a mind blowing experience. They are living in an alternative reality in there; and they don’t understand when the rest of us are not a part of it.

There's been a lot of confusion regarding the recent language and culture dispute. Trump, Lutnick, and company weren't asking Francophone Canadians to stop speaking French, or to give up French-Canadian culture.
What the U.S. administration wanted (and snuck into the agreement at the last minute) was regarding French-language 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴.
Canada has two official languages: English and French. Most of French-speaking Canada reside in Québec, New Brunswick, various parts of Ontario, and pockets elsewhere across the country.
Approximately 29.2% of Canadians (about 10.7 million people) can speak fluent French. Some are bilingual.
𝟭𝟭.𝟮% 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵.
Canada officially became a country with two official languages on September 7, 1969, when the first federal Official Languages Act came into force. In Québec, provincial laws (Bill 96) take it a step further, requiring French text to be prominent and mandating that instruction manuals, warranties, and commercial digital collateral be available in French. FRENCH must precede English translation on all packaged goods sold within Québec! Any generic or descriptive terms embedded within a trademark must also include a visible French translation on the packaging. Instruction manuals, warranties, and digital collateral accompanying the product must also comply with these French-language standards. (Additionally, any imported package goods from the U.S. must also prominently display a product's METRIC weight/measurements—not just Imperial; we use a hybrid of Metric and Imperial in Canada.)
The U.S. has long complained that these packaging rules, alongside new digital regulations (like Quebec's Bill 109) that force American streaming services to fund and promote French-language content, are "trade barriers" that cost U.S. companies time and money.
𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 what the U.S. administration tried to sneak into the agreement at the last moment—despite it being Canadian LAW for all consumer goods (and digital media) to bear English and French languages (and Metric) on packaging! They wanted to skip the French translation, to export consumer goods—including food and cosmetics, into Canada without French translation on the packaging.
Doing so negates the rights of unilingual Francophones (who can't read or understand English) and would erode the importance of French culture in Canada.
To Americans, it looks like an administrative headache over labels.
To Canadians, 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲!
Forcing Canada to accept U.S. imports without French translations or digital media protections actively strips unilingual Canadian citizens of their legal right to read ingredients, warning labels, and operating manuals in their own language.
American companies already willingly adapt their products with Spanish text to capture the U.S. consumer market. Expecting Canada to dismantle its own federal laws and constitutional rights just to save U.S. exporters a re-design fee was a complete no-go.
Spanish packaging in the U.S. is almost entirely driven by market-capitalism to capture a consumer demographic.

Imagine if a foreign country demanded the U.S. dismantle its bilingual packaging conventions or accessibility laws just to make importing easier for them.
As the dispute unfolded, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick clarified that 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨.𝗦. 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗻 "𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆" 𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘀 (𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝟭𝟬𝟵). The U.S. viewed this as an unfair tax on tech companies. But to Canada, giving up protections on digital media opens the door to dismantling physical packaging protections next—making it a complete non-starter. (The U.S. officially withdrew this demand on August 27, acknowledging it wasn't a "red line" for them).
During the final hours of negotiations, the U.S. pushed for exemptions to these cultural and language frameworks. Prime Minister Mark Carney immediately walked away from the table.
BTW: Prime Minister Carney is an Anglophone who grew up in western Canada—Alberta (or "Albexas"—the provincial birthplace of Ted Cruz, who was born in Calgary, AB!). He's not bilingual, but as a requirement for him to lead the Liberal Party of Canada and as prime minister, he has to communicate in both of Canada's official languages. He's been working hard at learning, as well as to improve his conversational French, at 61 years-old. (Unlike Justin Trudeau, he wasn't raised in a bilingual home, where both languages were learned and spoken from early childhood.)
