I’m for splitting the country between blue and red states. Two governments. Pay your own way. I don’t even care about logistics. Figure it out. Its happening anyway but the blue states are paying to be f’d over by red states who can’t fund or won’t even educate themselves. I’m done ✅

Those of us from blue states can rightly say now that Donald Trump is not our president. He is purposely punishing blue states by cutting funding of projects primarily affecting blue states.

This government obviously doesn't represent us at all.

I would suggest that we shouldn't be paying Federal taxes.

You shouldn't. You shouldn't pay a dime while Trump's in office. Put it aside and pay it later. That is legal. Blue states are paying for their own misfortune

That is not legal, you would be fined for each month the taxes are not paid. I know a friend that was fined $2500 for not filing for a year. Each blue state would have to have the federal taxes sent to the capital of the state, not Washington.

I just know some people who did it. I actually didn't know the details but I'm sure they did it right. Plus I believe you still have to file whether you send them the money or not. I do know they have 10 years to collect.

In NY, you have 90 days to pay, or you get finned. He tried through H&R block, and through turbo tax, both stated the same to him. Some states have different laws on tax. Once his federal tax was finned, the state tax finned him also. So how else could he have done it without having a fine for not paying the taxes? He ended up going through IRS, and they deducted the fines, so his refund was small.

I thought federal taxes would be the same law but maybe not, because the people I know who did it did it in California and to tell you the truth after they said they weren't going to pay taxes that year cuz they were telling our boss, I didn't hear anything more about it. I always got money back cuz I was a single mom so I didn't really pay that much attention. I do my own taxes. One year I filed twice cuz I got a W-2 late and I figured it out if I sent it in if I would get more money back and I would so I did. I got about 3 500 bucks that year

Did they do it this last tax season? Because the tax law changed in 2024, at least it did in NY. My friend claimed for 3, he is single, he thought he would get money back by doing it that way, he found out, he will still have to pay every year now.

The best sign I saw said "January 6 Was Hate America Day." :)

I want to share part of an excellent editorial in my local newspaper (remember them?) recently: "Without external input, the only tools remaining for Trump are impulse and gut instinct. These are manifested in his reflexive anger as crystallized in his incessant, often derogatory, and frequently profane, media postings. But rather than reflecting the considered views of a statesman, they amount to no more than rants with a consistent edge of malevolence.

But MAGA adherents generally have no objection because, again, they feel they have been hurt (in some obscure, hard-to-identify way), and now they want somebody else to be hurt. Trump is willing to do the hurting. Despite his lies, failed promises, and illegal actions, he’s their man.

The Democrats therefore need to be clear-eyed about what they’re dealing with. Hoping that MAGA will see the error of its ways and reject Trump’s cruelty and duplicity amounts to little more than crossing one’s fingers."

I think he really puts his finger on it, don't you? To which I will add a quote pinned on the wall above my desk: "Anger reduces our cognitive ability." That explains a lot.

The entire editorial may be available here, if not paywalled: https://www.bangordailynews.com/2025/10/13/opinion/opinion-contributor/what-democrats-dont-get-about-maga/

The mass protests this weekend were fantastic to see, but what you see in countries where they are successful is not just the 3.5% you mentioned but also sustained protests. Once every 4 months isn’t going to be enough. They need to be more frequent.

Erika Chenoweth's 3.5% role is based on long term statistical studies of resistance movements, but it is not a guarantee of overturning fascist regimes. If 3.5% of a population actively protest there is a 50% chance they will succeed. Moreover, as more cases of resistance are recorded, the 3.5% number may change. Chenoweth has noticed that as authoritarians get wise to resistance tactics and fight them, it may take more than 3.5% to give resisters a 50-50 chance of prevailing. Hang tough!

The DSA wing, better known as "The Squad," has literally taken over the Democratic Party. Their actual name is "Socialists," and let's be real, while the idea of equality is great in theory, when it goes too far, it becomes communism. You see that when you have people like Mamdani saying he's going to "seize the means of production" and "take over property in Manhattan."

Because of this far-left takeover, the Democrats absolutely crashed and burned in 2024, and they are guaranteed to lose again in 2026. They've destroyed the party of FDR, completely embraced antisemitism (check the record!), and made people like Mahmud Khalil, a man who spat on and terrorized Jewish students at Columbia for two years, their free speech poster child. They are literally marching with anti-Israel protestors in the city of 9/11 to "globalize the intifada."

I cannot believe I have lived long enough to watch both political parties implode. The Democrats collapsed exactly when we needed them most to rise to the moment. WTAF. Thank you, Mary, for sharing all the great news about the protests. It's good to see how much Americans care about our country and each other. Reminds me of what MLK said, "we must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope."

The issue is not ideology - its ACCOUNTABILITY. When a government intentionally harms its citizens, then it is just a bunch of thugs that should be charged and prosecuted. there are many socialist countries doing just fine: Iceland, Norway, and Canada. unlike you guys, we didn't have any problems with our banking system. when Trudeau tried to appease trump, we threw him out and got Carney. and despite whatever you believe about our medical system, we are not dieing here all over the place . we had a very small fraction of covid deaths compared to you guys. and, we are even surviving Donald Trump. so wake up.

although I agree some idealogies like fascism have a built-in mandate to harm it's citizens. but, you should be looking at who is yielding the power regardless of political party and whether they are doing it for personal profit by inflicting harm.

Trumps goons already are. but, also remember, Trump tried to first join the Democrat party. what if he was doing this from a different platform? maybe as an independent. you can't vote based on party. you have to deal with aholes wherever they show up. it's got nothing to do with parties, or idealoligies like socialism. The Nazi party was socialist but everything it did was because of an insane man that put other insane men into power. China is Communist, yet it's the leading economy in the world, because none of the leaders are as insane as the president of North Korea. America is capatilist and it's not functioning because of the same reason Germany didn't: there was a mad man at the helm - in this case Donald Trump. stop treating this as an idiological issue and start treating it for what it is: you've got psychos that are like Norman Bates running your country regardless of the party.

A big part of it is connected to the Epstein case because these assholes have done harm all their lives and not just in government. Epstein just happened to document it and kept the receipts.

Neither Iceland nor Norway is a socialist country.

Socialism is a failed political system that leads to communism.

Those countries have a social safety net like we do since FDR.

Their system is more robust than ours, and we are the only Western democracy without national healthcare.

We can embrace national healthcare without embracing the hatred and lies spewed by millionaire Bernie Sanders, who attacks the billionaires.

The top 1% in this country pay 40.4% of all federal income taxes plus billions more in property, utility, sales, and capital gains taxes.

The top 50% in this country pay 97% of all federal income taxes.

The Republicans embrace the policies of Herbert Hoover: a small federal government that lets the private sector engage in good business practices, but not controlled or mandated by the federal government.

FDR flipped the script and erected 85 agencies, which Democrats have been fighting to protect against Republican cuts ever since.

I'm an FDR Democrat but not a socialist since socialism led to communism and the deaths of 100 million people in the 20th century and billions more suffering under its tyranny and corruption today. You think it's not bad in America, look out your window.

The socialist Squad has destroyed my party and made sure Trump won twice. When will the Democrats learn? I guess never.

No, sadly, it's not. And with a political science degree, I know these terms and their dark, failed history. Socialism and Communism are failed systems of government.

Bernie Sanders screaming for 10 years, we need a political revolution, attacking the billionaires, embracing antisemitism, and threatening Israel are all part of the Russian playbook.

You want national healthcare? So do I. You want a strong, special safety net? So do I. You want the legacy of FDR protected? So do I.

It can all be done, but nothing will be done well under socialism, which has handed the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court to the Republicans.

Bernie Sanders and the DSA have destroyed the Democratic Party and allowed Trump to win twice.

Biden accomplished so much, and he is not a member of the DSA. Neither was Obama nor Clinton.

Thank you.

Well, I think we are splitting hairs on what the term "socialist democracy" means.

For me, some markers are: a country where some of its companies are state owned (such as crown corporations in Canada), some aspects of industry are regulated (such as insurance and banking in Canada), and that the welfare of citizens is addressed by the community at large (such as housing, food, basic income, education, and healthcare) as a feature of being a member of that community.

So, under that definition, yes - Nordic states are socialist democracies because they have harsher climates that can kill people. so, their communities look out for one another.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_model

But, that's besides the point. you got crooks running your government that are literally killing people. that's not the role of a government. and, criminals don't align themselves with parties. they do things out of their own selfish needs - not anybody else's. when the Epstein files eventually get released, you will see that both Republicans and Democrats were clients - just like Prince Andrew was (he isn't Republican).

So, maybe you should focus more on not electing convicted criminals or felons, where a court determined they were.

Bernie Sanders was never charge with a crime that he was convicted of in his life, unlike Trump who has a revolving door just for him in the court system and several cases were settled against him.

did the Democrats just hand over the keys to trump without auditing anything? Yes, that happened. Kamala Haris failed to do her job as an election auditor which is one of the roles of a VP. Sanders wasn't in the electoral college supervising it as far as I know.

Expand full comment
Lisa P. Singer's avatar

You called Iceland and Norway socialist countries, and they are absolutely not. Iceland has a Parliamentary republic, and Norway has both a Parliamentary System and a Constitutional Monarchy.

It matters a great deal to these terms, and I want my party and this country as far away from deadly, disastrous, dangerous socialism as possible.

The social safety net is not socialism. Sanders and the Squad are 100% dangerous delusional socialists. They destroyed our party the same way MAGA destroyed the Republican party.

The crimes, cruelty, and corruption of Trump are super well-known. Just read Mary's books. It's awful, all of it, sickening and growing worse by the day.

But he won twice, not because of messaging or FOX News. He won because the Democrats have lost their mind and are out of step with the majority of this country on too many issues.

Democrats lost on policy first, and yes, Harris ran one of the worst campaigns I have ever seen in my life. She refused to speak to the press 2 weeks after launching, and when she did, her answers to me sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard. My children have better policy answers than she did.

Madening all of it. But to most Americans, all politicians are crooks and liars, and they are not entirely wrong. Sanders claimed he never took super PAC money and described himself as a humble man from Virginia. Malarky. He is a millionaire like all of them.

Expand full comment
Andy's avatar

Well, I agree the Harris Walz campaign was more performative and not informative. she didn't explain how she intended to build out the middle class - just that she was going to. she mentioned some small business tax breaks and loans - but didn't explain how they would actually work - like terms and conditions. Biden was essentially following MMT. She could have explained what that was (which is what funneling internal money into small businesses essentially is). I think what you are saying is Kamal's campaign lacked substance.

For example, she said Trump Tariffs are a tax. she didn't explain why they won't bring forgein revenue, nor that reducing forgein competition is a primary cause of inflation.

And, Walz years later said that he and kamela barely consulted each other.

But, you don't want people to give up on voting good people in. not, those like Trump - from anywhere. this whole idea about voting by party lines is stupid. if you prolioritize a party over screening the candidate, of course you will get assholes in. every election I have voted in Canada was for a different party. I went by the best person in my area to represent me, and the most knowledgeable leader that had compassion and a track record of being a decent human being. none of these qualities does trump have

Expand full comment
Lisa P. Singer's avatar

Our issue in America is the primary system. Only 18% of Americans vote in the primaries, and it brings out the most extreme ends of the party, so eventually you wind up only with extreme candidates and no centrists.

Open Primaries and Rank Choice Voting will cause the two parties to change overnight to the center.

It's a battle just like getting the vote for black men, women, the poor, and the youth. But it is a big part of the puzzle to fix this and it is our next step to bring this country together.
