May his continuous sliding end in an abyss with no return.

Methinks we’re watching deranged Donny have a nervous breakdown in real time. He’s losing his friggin’ mind!

DW's avatar

Nah, poor guy, he's made out of play-dough and Cheetos dust. He' ll just continue to stare into space and doze off punctuated by his tm'd hair weave of asshattery outbursts. I wish he had had better (or even good enough) parents tho. That might have spared the nation and world order from tilting off its axis.

Merry's avatar

Well, while some of that might true. His hair weave is certainly a freakish nightmare. But I beg to differ about having “better parents”.

I grew up in a household that was a perpetual WAR ZONE. My mother was married 4 times, my first 2 fathers were alcoholics. My first stepfather was a sexual predator and I know from personal experience. Poverty was a daily issue. I often went to bed hungry. I felt tremendous shame.

Yet I not only survived, but I refused to accept defeat and their version of life. So I kept pulling myself up, learned from their mistakes and committed myself to never repeat their behavior.

I earned a medical degree, a masters degree, wrote a book, have taught and lectured students and peers, and have helped people from different backgrounds from all over the world reverse their chronic diseases by simply using food as primary medicine.

And I’ve met hundreds of people who were traumatized by difficult childhoods. But they dealt with it in constructive ways.

So. While I’ll respect your opinion, I can attest to the fact that “better parents” isn’t necessarily the problem. His parents had the financial means to send him to private schools and Wharton. And I think Mary’s father was a kind and good man.

Yes. DJT is a deprave, deviant who has severe psychopathic disorders. But are his parents the cause? He could have made better choices for himself. He could have chosen a better path, a better life annd committed himself to making the world a better place. Instead he relishes and thrives on doing harm to others.

Winston Smith London Oceania's avatar

The problem with his parents, specifically his father - who was also a psychopath - wasn't abuse, it was spoiling little Donny to death. He could do whatever he wanted. He could do no wrong. And he apparently inherited the old man's psychopathy.

Merry's avatar

Agree, there weren’t many boundaries in his early life. None he took seriously anyway. And Fred Trump taught his children, primarily the boys - that “they must be "killers" or "kings" to succeed, reinforcing the belief that the world is divided into predators and weaklings.”

Eventually when Donny was 13, he was sent to a military academy to learn “values” and “discipline”.

His interactions with other students -

“Loudmouth Bully": Childhood neighbors and NYMA classmates described Trump as a "loudmouth bully" who would hurl insults and push people around.

“Physical Altercations: In one notable incident at NYMA, after a dispute over a messy room inspection, Trump reportedly tried to push a fellow cadet, Ted Levine, out of a second-floor window before other students intervened. Levine stated that within the academy's culture, such aggression was seen as a sign of strength.

"Iron Fist" Dormitory Rule: Biographer Marc Fisher noted that Trump "ruled dormitory life with an iron fist" and yelled at his classmates.

Trump carried that bullying attitude with him into his adult life. And he has stated openly that hates to lose and he’s extremely vindictive.

Mary trump describes him in her book, TOO MUCH AND NEVER ENOUGH

“Psychologist Mary Trump: Why Pres. Trump Hates Losing”

THAT book is an excellent read - for anyone who wonders how Trump get so “effed-up” in his life.

Most was the fault of both parents, and rest is just his CHOICE.

Kate Delano-Condax Decker's avatar

You made the right choices. All good ones. Very commendable, and great to know, that you choose to do what is right.

Kate Delano-Condax Decker's avatar

Ironic, that Trump "hates losing" as you remark.

Donald J Trump is the BIGGEST LOSER most of us have ever had the disgusting experience of seeing, hearing, or smelling. A first class jerk. He lost it years and years ago. My initial comment was rhetorical.

I’ve actually been following DJT’s career since the mid 1980’s when I was living/working in Manhattan around the corner from trump tower. His reputation as a liar, cheat, racist bigot, conman, bully, womanizer and sexual predator who assaulted women preceded him.

And since then I have done extensive research into both his professional and personal history, perhaps because I also grew up in an extremely dysfunctional family, far worse than his, which involved alcoholics, poverty, hunger, physical brutality, fear, chaos and shame. But in spite of all that, I chose to pull myself out of the hopelessness of all those traumatic years and excel, as I described above.

I also have a minor degree in psychology, focused on deviant behavior. So, even though I’m not a trained clinical psychologist like Mary Trump is, I’m well aware of Trump’s deviancies.

The SUPERMAJORITY PLAN TO SAVE THE COUNTRY FROM TRUMP

It will take 292 house and 67 senate democrats to obtain a supermajority vote. The supermajority vote will negate the need for Trump to sign a bill into law. THIS IS THE KEY TO ACCOMPLISHING ANYTHING. The house and senate can pass a law to release the classified files implicating Trump and his billionaire pedophile network. They can pass a law to investigate the coverup of those files within the Trump administration.

EVERYONE IS GOING TO HAVE TO VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS IN THE NOVEMBER 6th MIDTERM ELECTIONS TO MAKE THIS WORK

You can't because it has never really happened except in the most egregious circumstances e.

Ian D. Carroll's avatar

Against my better judgment, I am going to take your questions seriously. Let’s focus on Biden’s reversals of signature Trump policies. Here’s the top ten, via Gemini 3 prompt:

“During his term, President Joe Biden prioritized dismantling many of the signature initiatives of the Trump administration, often using executive orders to do so immediately upon taking office.

Here are the top ten significant reversals of Trump-era policies under the Biden administration.

1. Rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement

* Trump Policy: In 2017, President Trump announced the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris Agreement, arguing it disadvantaged the U.S. economy. The withdrawal formally took effect in November 2020.

* Biden Reversal: On his first day in office (January 20, 2021), Biden signed an executive order to rejoin the accord, recommitting the U.S. to international goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

2. Halting the Border Wall Construction

* Trump Policy: A central campaign promise, Trump declared a national emergency to divert billions in military and other federal funds to construct a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

* Biden Reversal: Biden issued a proclamation ending the national emergency declaration and immediately paused all construction projects and funding diversion related to the border wall.

3. Ending the "Muslim Ban" (Travel Bans)

* Trump Policy: Early in his presidency, Trump issued executive orders (commonly referred to as the "Muslim Ban") that restricted travel from several Muslim-majority nations, as well as certain African countries, citing national security concerns.

* Biden Reversal: Biden revoked these proclamations on Day One, calling them discriminatory and stating they harmed U.S. alliances and families.

4. Revoking the Keystone XL Pipeline Permit

* Trump Policy: The Trump administration had issued a presidential permit to allow the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, a project designed to carry oil from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast, which had been blocked by the Obama administration.

* Biden Reversal: Biden revoked the cross-border permit for the pipeline, effectively killing the project. He cited climate change concerns and the need to transition to a clean energy economy.

5. Reversing the Transgender Military Ban

* Trump Policy: In 2017, Trump announced a ban on transgender people serving in the military, reversing an Obama-era policy that allowed them to serve openly.

* Biden Reversal: Within his first week, Biden signed an executive order repealing the ban, allowing qualified transgender individuals to serve in the Armed Forces and prohibiting discharge based on gender identity.

6. Rejoining the World Health Organization (WHO)

* Trump Policy: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump moved to withdraw the U.S. from the WHO, accusing the organization of mismanagement and being too deferential to China.

* Biden Reversal: Biden halted the withdrawal process immediately and appointed Dr. Anthony Fauci as the head of the U.S. delegation to the WHO, restoring U.S. funding and participation.

7. Restoring Federal Workforce Protections (Schedule F)

* Trump Policy: Late in his term, Trump issued an executive order creating "Schedule F," a new employment category that would have stripped civil service protections from tens of thousands of federal employees, making them easier to fire and replace with political appointees.

* Biden Reversal: Biden revoked the Schedule F order, restoring job protections and collective bargaining rights for federal workers.

8. Fortifying DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)

* Trump Policy: The Trump administration attempted to rescind the DACA program, which protects undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children ("Dreamers") from deportation.

* Biden Reversal: Biden issued a memorandum directing the Secretary of Homeland Security to take all appropriate actions to "preserve and fortify" DACA, signaling a return to the Obama-era stance of protecting Dreamers.

9. Restoring National Monuments (Bears Ears & Grand Staircase-Escalante)

* Trump Policy: President Trump significantly reduced the size of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments in Utah, opening the land up to potential mining and drilling.

* Biden Reversal: Biden issued proclamations restoring the monuments to their original boundaries, protecting millions of acres of land and cultural sites sacred to Native American tribes.

10. Census Count Inclusion

* Trump Policy: The Trump administration sought to exclude undocumented immigrants from the 2020 Census count used for apportioning congressional seats and Electoral College votes.

* Biden Reversal: Biden signed an executive order requiring the Census Bureau to count all residents, regardless of immigration status, ensuring that apportionment is based on the total population as has been traditional practice.”

Dems in congress and/or the senate ? If you’re referencing individual(s) who are in the house or senate, what would one or more of those individuals motive(s) be to obstruct a fellow democrat or democrats from moving on Trump ?

embers60's avatar

People don't understand how articles of impeachment actually work which is that they don't when it's the minority party drawing up articles of impeachment when there are no members in the majority party to support the action. The speaker of the house in the majority party totally controls what comes to the floor for a vote, no way would Johnson allow that to happen. The only way he could be forced to allow a vote on impeachment would be a discharge petition but that again requires members of the majority party to sign the petition. Though enough repugnican reps were willing to sign the discharge petition to allow a vote on releasing the Epstein files there's no way dems would get any to sign a petition to allow a vote on articles of impeachment. Even were a miracle to occur and we got enough signatures on a discharge petition *and* got enough repugnicans to vote for impeachment the likelihood of the Senate repugnicans breaking partisan lines and voting to convict/remove Trump is nil! We already been there done that in his last term and it's 99.9% certain we'd have the same outcome this time. Turns out it's a waste of time filing articles of impeachment when the desired and deserved outcome of conviction and removal is DOA from the start.

I am absolutely stunned by the level of hatred that has raised its ugly head, above whatever level it was in the U.S., since Trump came on the scene in 2015. Angry, bigoted and hatred filled people are emboldened now. I’d argue, because of Trump. I see his anger, unapologetic, ignorant and childish behavior has acted like a contagion. Infesting people that are vulnerable, ignorant, angry, or in a position to gain more power or control, like Trump himself….it’s simply mind boggling. Trump relishes in harming people he perceives as his enemies, whether they simply disagree, challenge or threaten his views. Absolute insecurity. And all of this disfunction has spilled over into every neighborhood, school and workplace in the country. It’s heartbreaking that over 70 million adults cast a ballot for him….TWICE !

TIM ALLEN- ON TRUMP: Whatever your feelings on Trump, these are some interesting points that Tim Allen makes. Put your hatred aside, and think about these observations. Tim Allen is credited with writing this...

Tim Allen wrote: Here are some interesting points to think about prior to 2020, especially to my friends on the fence, like moderate Democrats, Libertarians and Independents, and the Never Trump Republicans, and those thinking of "walking away" from the Democrat Party:

*Women are upset at Trump’s naughty words- they also bought 80 million copies of 50 Shades of Gray.

*Not one feminist has defended Sarah Sanders. It seems women's rights only matter if those women are liberal.

*No Border Walls. No Voter ID laws. Did you figure it out yet? But wait...there's more....

*Chelsea Clinton got out of college and got a job at NBC that paid $900,000 per year. Her Mom flies around the country speaking about white priviledge. And just like that, they went from being against foreign interference in our elections to allowing non-citizens to vote in our elections.

*President Trump’s wall cost less than the Obamacare website. Let that sink in, America!

*We are one election away from open borders, socialism, gun confiscation, and full-term abortion, nationally. We are fighting evil.

*They sent more troops and armament to arrest Roger Stone, than they did to defend Benghazi.

*60 years ago, Venezuela was 4th on the world economic freedom index. Today, they are 179th, and their citizens are dying of starvation. In only 10 years, Venezuela was destroyed by democratic socialism.

*Russia donated $0.00 to the Trump campaign. Russia donated $145,600,000 to the Clinton Foundation. But Trump was the one investigated!

*Nancy Pelosi invited illegal aliens to the State of the Union. President Trump invited victims of illegal aliens to the State of the Union. Let that sink in!

*A socialist is basically a communist who doesn't have the power to take everything away from their citizens at gunpoint...Yet!

*How do you walk 3,000 miles across Mexico without food or support, and show up at our border 100 pounds overweight and with a cell phone?

*Alexandria Ocasio Cortez wants to ban cars, ban planes, give out universal income, and thinks socialism works. She calls Donald Trump crazy.

*Bill Clinton paid $850,000 to Paula Jones to get her to go away. I don't remember the FBI raiding his lawyer's office.

*I wake up every day and I am grateful that Hillary Clinton is not the President of the United States of America. The same media that told me Hillary Clinton had a 95% chance of winning, now tells me that Trump’s approval ratings are low.

*"The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money."- Margaret Thatcher

*Maxine Waters opposes Voter ID laws; She thinks that they are racist. You need to have a photo ID to attend her town hall meetings.

*President Trump said "They're not after me. They're after YOU. I'm just in their way."

The dems assumed incorrectly that trump’s despicable nature would be enough to win, it wasn’t and TBH they need to realise that if a majority of Americans want the border under control then they need to recognise that. At some level trump is the change agent no one wants, hopefully the US will swing back from the polarised state it is in, I feel the next generations are more progressive and know the American dream is now less attainable than ever, unless you are born into inherited wealth, but it feels there is a police state/ Gestapo, whatever you want to call ICE so well funded now that it may build enough momentum to suppress the people for a very long time…. as Putin has done.

So true and so astutely written, Mary. We all continue to be gobsmacked at how this has happened. I never would have imagined that the US harbored so many rudderless, soulless politicians. I'm sure they all sleep well at night, too, while we can't.

RDB1172's avatar

I’m not gobsmacked. This is exactly what has been happening for 10.5 years. He’s an idiot. A bumbling, incompetent idiot, who has risen because of his father — all laid out perfectly in Mary’s first book. As soon as they stop healthcare, trans issues, and vaccines, they move on to more nefarious policies and practices. He WILL wag the dog in Venezuela. People will continue to die in immigration camps because they are too inept to articulate a reasonable policy and frankly, they enjoy making people suffer. I’m real tired of fake Christians making people suffer. And the Epstein files, omg. Of course he was involved with young girls. There are pictures. There are depositions, and we’ve seen film of him with his daughter. I left gobsmacked behind after watching him mock a disabled person. Think about Gary Hart and Howard Dean and what ended their political ambitions. Our country is screwed.

Lir Talan's avatar

It's been happening longer than that - the last 25yrs at least, but I would say all the way back to Reagan, when the idea of 'trickle-down economics' was created to muffle and misdirect any anger against the super rich, when we began to deregulate business and industry so they could cut corners and maximize profits at the expense of their workers, when it became normal to openly demonize people on govt benefits of any kind, and the disastrous, failed 'War on Drugs' went into high gear, etc. Every successive president only deepened the crises we were facing as a nation, on one front or another, despite a few gains. To be sure the last 10.5yrs accelerated it, but for example, the first incarnation of MAGA was the Tea Party. And the Christo-fascist Religious Right goes back to 1979 & the so-called Moral Majority, who invented the extreme anti-abortion movement out of wholecloth in order to split off, galvanize and mold all evangelical Christians into a lockstep Conservative voting base. One that could, by welding them to the GOP, carry them into a future where religion was law and Christo-fascists the rule. That, more than anything, has been HF's mission - to eventually realize a Christian form of sharia law, ie. religious law that applies to all citizens whether they believe or not. The corporate technocrats have found them very useful, as a front for the oligarchy which is consolidating true power behind the scenes. The dark money governs all, which is fine with them since the Christo-fascists worship money and power more than any god.

RDB1172's avatar

Yes, it’s been happening since Reagan, I stated I was past gobsmacked 10.5 years ago. Reagan was awful in so many ways.

Ellen C Leichtman's avatar

It’s probably always been with this country. I go back to Nixon and the Southern Strategy, which points back to the Civil Rights era, and then back to Reconstruction and the Civil War. Which then reminds us of States’ Rights and the Electoral College because of the founding of the country with slavery.

Lir Talan's avatar

Bingo - all of it ultimately goes back to race, and the racists who wanted to keep slavery so much, they fought a war and invented a new religion (or at least the biggest schism since the Reformation), Evangelical Christians, and they've been fighting ever since to be allowed to legally discriminate and make racist laws again, to undo the CRA entirely so black people can be segregated again, and worse.

It's all ultimately about racist whites wanting to hold onto their prejudices and have that be the norm instead of frowned upon, and poor/working class white people buying into the lies about how it's a zero sum game, that minorities are being given an advantage by DEI (somehow) and taking their jobs, so on and so forth. They want back the times when a mediocre white man would be chosen before any black or brown person, no matter how skilled.

That's why Trump cannot STAND that Obama got a Nobel and he couldn't, nevermind that he's not actually smart or capable enough to do something that merits one; to him a black man cannot out-achieve him on the face of it. He can't accept or even really process it - the world should not be allowed to work that way, point blank.

When the crowd cheered Trump’s mocking dismissal of John McCain’s war heroism — “He was a war hero because he was captured” — is the moment the GOP lost its soul. I still can’t believe Lindsey Graham gave Trump the time of day after that. But Graham is emblematic of the craven pursuit of power and access which enables Trump and Trumpism.

The saving grace here is that Trump is incapable of learning from his mistakes. Were he capable of doing do, he could very easily have won in 2020. Were he capable of doing so, he would have, as several wise observers have suggested, just allowed the Biden economic recovery to continue while DJT just played golf and coated his office wall with golden bling.

But he can’t, and in that fact lies his greatest gift to us. As a would-be tinpot dictator, he’s an utter failure, but he has showed us just enough of what a far more competent autocrat might have done to alert more and more of us, including his own supporters, to the risk his agenda poses for this nation.

The Trump presidency has done what no normal presidency could have, awakened us to the fragility of our Republic after years or widespread complacency, too steeped in the idea that our government was far more secure than it is.

Outdoorluvr's avatar

He is nothing more than a stooge for the evil people propping him up. The Heritage Foundation, Peter Thiel, tech bros, J.D. Vance, profit-mongers, TurningPoint USA, etc. are NOT going away. Hatred of trump is a distraction that we're all paying dearly for, while the cogs churn behind his scenes.

James Quinn's avatar

That’s a bit too simplistic. He is doing as much or more for them than they are doing for him. Had Hillary won in 2016 (which, at least by the pppular vote, she did), we wouldn’t be anywhere near here. Had Joe Biden not made the disastrous decision to run for a second term, the Democrats might have found someone (not necessarily Ms Harris0 able to beat Trump in 2024, we wouldn’t be here.

There are many strings in play in this orchestral extravaganza,

Christene Cuch's avatar

No, they had already hacked and stole the election with Elon Musks help.

Lir Talan's avatar

Now who's being simplistic? Do you not understand that those things don't even matter? They had no bearing on the outcome of the election - do you not realize Musk basically admitted to hacking the voting machines infrastructure to actually, literally steal the election this time? That exit polling and other measures show Harris actually did win? No matter who the candidate, they wouldn't have been *allowed* to just win, because the techbros had decided that Trump made an excellent figurehead AND distraction, able to keep the outrage cycle going while they dismantle what's left of democracy and dig their dirty little AI surveillance tendrils deep into the 'government' that's left.

It will already take decades to undo what's been done to capture and distort our systems of power, law and justice, unless we just replace the government entirely, and even then, there will be things we don't even know about which will remain in the shadow government oligarchy that has been established, still trying to influence and direct society in the way they think it should go - but from the shadows. Because they know, they've outright _admitted_ that the people, the voting public would never vote for the things on their agenda. Their goal is to force social changes by completely bypassing real, fair elections and voting, because they're not electable and their agenda is widely unpopular and they know it. Same goes for the Christo-fascists.

They already know they can never, will never win a free and fair election, but they are determined to put their vision in place in spite of that, by hook or by crook, and they've already done it once. And NOT enough people have woken up to, or see what's really going on behind the scenes, behind and beyond Trump - everyone in the *unredacted* Epstein files, all the billionaires, techbros, industry magnates and corporate conglomerate titans, all the rabid fascists who are wanting to put religion and/or Nazi ideology, often both, up as the law of the land because they're all either racist as fuck or simply don't care what happens to 'those people' - immigrants, minorities, LGBTQs, the disabled - at the bottom of their preferred order of society.

James Quinn's avatar

Left wing conspirators and their theories are no more useful than those on the right.

Had there been any indication at all that the 2024 election had been ‘stolen’ by the right, the Democratic Party would have lanched an all-out legal battle almost from Day One (as the right did after 2020, even without any indication of voter fraud).

You need to accept the reality and work to alter it in time for 2026. Claims that Harris won in 2024 are at best useless and at worst just more fodder for the right wing nuts.

Lir Talan's avatar

- the Dems would have launched an all-out legal battle: WRONG. They passively accepted the result *in spite of* all the evidence that it was tampered with, because Dem party leadership is largely spineless and passive. They have not been, and not been capable of, going on the offensive in a long time, not in any effective way.

It’s not a conspiracy theory if there is real evidence. It's reality, and I'm sorry you're so committed to your naiveté. Most of us know better, and we also know that simply 'claiming' or making a statement that Harris won or trying to fight it, isn't the point at all - it's that we cannot *trust* our electors, voting machines or any digital counts in elections anymore, none of our current electoral process, so passively waiting around for the next elections to maybe shift the balance is pointless. We should still vote while we can, but we CANNOT rely on it to resolve this crisis of democracy.

Actively protesting and resisting, both online and off, making sure to stand up or speak up and be counted, encouraging others to do the same, standing up for our neighbours against ICE thugs who have no real legal authority, refusing to play ball by joining the boycott of the worst parts of the corporate capitalist hellscape (Amazon, Target, Disney, Walmart, etc) and so on, are far more effective ways to show how many of us there are who will resist and oppose this fascist regime until our last breath.

Refusing to see all the ways that Republicans have allowed techbro billionaires and super-rich oligarchs to manipulate and compromise our democratic process, and how serious the problem has become, is merely willful blindness that does little but passively *support* the regime, by giving it a legitimacy it has NEVER deserved.

It's not about left vs. right, not really - it's about the common man vs. the oligarchs & super rich & megacorps trying to use and suppress us ALL, to usurp all levers of power in our society, and take complete authoritarian control of the govt, such as is left of it - and inasmuch as they don't control most of it indirectly through dark money already. You are focused on the distraction, not the enemy. This is a vertical war.

James Quinn's avatar

Outdoorluvr's avatar

History from your viewpoint really doesn't matter. I'm looking at the future of the players in this regime, and how they'll affect our fight to get this country back on track.

James Quinn's avatar

I’m not expressing an historical point of view, simply stating the fact that Trump’s actions have created a growing backlash and a realization of what could happen if he is not stopped, a realization of our fragility and the apparent inability of the Constitution as it now exists to reign him in. Without him, this realization wouldn’t have happened.

The future is unknown. There is no real historical guide here because Trump’s actions are almost entirely unprecedented in American presidential history. Nor have we ever had some of the things that have so enabled his agenda - notably the internet.

Outdoorluvr's avatar

Have it your way. "Simplistic" works for most people, without all the hand-wringing about Clinton and Biden. Fact is, the actors behind trump have been writing their Project 2025 prequels since 1980, while too many liberal-minded voters waited for democracy to lend itself to their individual wishes. We're far too privileged in this country, if we couldn't see this (the trump regime) coming.

James Quinn's avatar

Actually Project 2025 ‘prequels’ have been in progress since at least the 1880’s (See Heather Cox Richardson’s To Set Men Free, her story of the transformation of the Party of Lincoln into the Party of Trump), and many have seen something like Trump coming in the personages of the Robber Barons, the obsessive right wing opposition to FDR’s New Deal, Charles Coughlin, Huey Long, Joe McCarthy, Richard Nixon, Barry Goldwater, Newt Gingrich, et al. Indeed, such people have peopled our history, going back to almost to our founding. There has always been the tension between those who believed in democracy, however flawed, and those who did not.

Indeed, many of the Founders recognized the threat someone like Trump would pose. But they knew as well that to put in place enough hard guardrails to prevent a Trump would doom the Republic. As they themselves did with Washington, they knew it would ultimately rest on us to continue to choose at least rationally if not always wisely.

What wasn’t at all clear was the power of the internet, which has changed everything. Donald Trump won in 2016 in large measure because he used the internet to go straight to the people, over the heads of the Republican establishment, which recognized much of the threat he posed, said so, and then, when they saw that he’d outmaneuvered, like many in Germany in the 1930’s mistakenly figured they could use him to further their own agendas.

Other factors - among them globalization which in many ways did the opposite of what its defenders assumed it would - level the playing field across the globe.

Indeed, Trump has always been in the wings - and this time we let him take center stage.
