It's a lot harder not to despair when you live in a deep red state and you see or even feel the worst effects of the regime every day. When you actually DON'T have most of those things. I'm disabled and dependent on several programs which recently got major cuts or added requirements, among other things - with my health I only have the energy to survive, much as I would like to support the resistance in various ways.

I can't, and I'm terrified of what will happen to me when support/benefit programs get axed entirely, or cut to the point of uselessness, or the next round of crazy (institutionalization??) rolls out. I can see where it's all going, and it probably means I die before the resistance succeeds. That doesn't mean I don't support it, whatever small way I can, but asking people in desperate situations, where the line between life and death keeps getting thinner, to not feel desperate and despairing really sounds like privilege.

Where you sit, maybe you still have those things, but many, many others are living hand to mouth, on a razor thin edge with no energy or attention to spare from just trying to make sure themselves and their children survive. You might as well be talking about pie in the sky for all the reality it has to us.

I get your point, I really do, but so many of us are not lucky enough to be able to see that perspective, nor able to simply look past the stark cruelty of our own daily realities. Our fight is taken up with merely staying alive, and we don't have any extra. Try to have some understanding of how hard merely that is for those of us already in the trenches, so to speak. They're coming for us _now_ and there's no time left.

JD Vance is a proxy for Peter Thiel. I believe that Russell Vought and Stephen Miller are actually "running" the country, with people like Kristi Noem and Kash Patel running fast and loose with their bureaus and the treasury.

Excellent writing. My favorite part is the way you define why he’s never going to admit his mistakes. I believe in this. It’s my observation from his past, your books, etc… he would choose to fall before admitting he was stumbling. In the end, I hope to see justice for his victims and truth prevail in our government. My eyes are on that prize. Long live the survivors in happiness and health!

So true and so astutely written, Mary. We all continue to be gobsmacked at how this has happened. I never would have imagined that the US harbored so many rudderless, soulless politicians. I'm sure they all sleep well at night, too, while we can't.

I’m not gobsmacked. This is exactly what has been happening for 10.5 years. He’s an idiot. A bumbling, incompetent idiot, who has risen because of his father — all laid out perfectly in Mary’s first book. As soon as they stop healthcare, trans issues, and vaccines, they move on to more nefarious policies and practices. He WILL wag the dog in Venezuela. People will continue to die in immigration camps because they are too inept to articulate a reasonable policy and frankly, they enjoy making people suffer. I’m real tired of fake Christians making people suffer. And the Epstein files, omg. Of course he was involved with young girls. There are pictures. There are depositions, and we’ve seen film of him with his daughter. I left gobsmacked behind after watching him mock a disabled person. Think about Gary Hart and Howard Dean and what ended their political ambitions. Our country is screwed.

It's been happening longer than that - the last 25yrs at least, but I would say all the way back to Reagan, when the idea of 'trickle-down economics' was created to muffle and misdirect any anger against the super rich, when we began to deregulate business and industry so they could cut corners and maximize profits at the expense of their workers, when it became normal to openly demonize people on govt benefits of any kind, and the disastrous, failed 'War on Drugs' went into high gear, etc. Every successive president only deepened the crises we were facing as a nation, on one front or another, despite a few gains. To be sure the last 10.5yrs accelerated it, but for example, the first incarnation of MAGA was the Tea Party. And the Christo-fascist Religious Right goes back to 1979 & the so-called Moral Majority, who invented the extreme anti-abortion movement out of wholecloth in order to split off, galvanize and mold all evangelical Christians into a lockstep Conservative voting base. One that could, by welding them to the GOP, carry them into a future where religion was law and Christo-fascists the rule. That, more than anything, has been HF's mission - to eventually realize a Christian form of sharia law, ie. religious law that applies to all citizens whether they believe or not. The corporate technocrats have found them very useful, as a front for the oligarchy which is consolidating true power behind the scenes. The dark money governs all, which is fine with them since the Christo-fascists worship money and power more than any god.
