Time for the Democrats to write the narrative here - stop criticizing and complaining about each other and declare a win! Instead of talking about caving - talk about how we saved the country, opened the government so hungry people could eat and get paychecks and air travel could be safe over the holidays. Take credit for the save. The GOP Senate made it very clear they would not vote to extend the ACA tax credits even for one year in a vote last week. So why continue a stand off with a position that was never going to compromise or change. Save the country and then you will have a big spotlight to shine on the GOP and their refusal to save the ACA when the vote comes up in December. It will be getting a lot more attention then than now when the closed government is getting so much more of the attention and the GOP is being blamed for it. So let's declare a win!! We can wash our dirty linen in private and replace the old generation of Democrat Senators without making ourselves should like losers. Who are we going to let write the story - DJT or us!! We need to change tactics immediately - stop calling our Senators out for caving and claim the win for reopening and saving people.
Bullshit! You just posted this exact same comment on Adam Parkhomenko/Sam Youngman's substack this am. I cannot fathom why it is getting "liked" at all. This attitude is ludicrous. As another commenter stated, these traitorous Dems have effectively aided Repugs in killing off Obamacare, which they have been trying to do since it's inception. This is NOT A WIN and to claim that it is, is delusional. No matter what you may think, Democrats have killed the momentum from last week's elections and given trump exactly what he wanted. I hope you're enjoying all of his disgusting gloating while he trashes people who get food stamps, etc. All of the Democrats who caved receive significant campaign donations from the airline industry. That is all they care about, pleasing their corporate donors, not fighting trump or standing up for their constituents! It's not surprising Dems still have low approval ratings and this calamity certainly won't help. They're not "saving the country," they're helping trump destroy it! Wake the fuck Up.
You tell them Sophie! I am sick of trying to find positives in a shit storm. Those 8 Democrats are traitors as far as I’m concerned and the ones who are retiring should be forced to step down so real fighters can be named to finish their term. The others must be primaried. We need to stop bringing knives to a gun fight. We need to do what the MAGAs do to people who don’t toe the line. We can all go back to Kumbaya after we rid the world of the MAGA regime.
I like the positive spin on this. Especially at this time when of year when air travel peaks and food should be in abundance for the holidays. This administration does not care a bit about people and the GOP is too scared to go against 47. So, the Democrats “saving the season” should be shouted loud and clear for all to hear!
Yeah, who needs healthcare, all that matters is holiday shopping, Americans stuffing themselves, and buying gifts they can't afford! These Democrats didn't "save" anything except their corporate donations from the airline industry while selling out the healthcare subsidies people actually rely on. Shame on you.
That's absurd. All big corporations' PACS donate to all elected officials.
Real people are suffering. Food banks can't accommodate their needs. Many people are either working without pay or have been furloughed without pay.
We had several years of isolation thanks to trump's inability to manage the pandemic. Holidays without family can be devastating to people. It wouldn't be long before the people would start blaming the Democrats.
Do you really think holding out longer would result in the sycophantic Repugs agreeing to approve extension or restoration of the premium tax credits, or that trump would sign off?
NO, it's not "absurd." Not all elected Dems take corporate PAC monies. STFU about "real people are suffering?!". My young adult kid did not get her SNAP benefits until recently because CA is one of the states that sued the trump regime. Red state recipients are still having difficulty as of yesterday. And she UNDERSTOOD perfectly why the shutdown needed to continue. Democratic voters want to see Dem senators and reps. fight back and stand up to trump! Did you even read Mary Trump's article? The positive energy from last week's elections has been stomped on. These same senators have voted with trump to confirm his unfit nominees time and again! And you can stop harping about holidays. To repeat: people might have to do without their capitalistic holiday orgy or maybe it should be postponed. The airline cutbacks were yet another planned attack by Repugs and Duffy's idiotic " management." These opportunistic Dem senators were more worried about people flying and doing the airlines' bidding than whether or not Americans have food. And most of all: they are caving to trump and appear weak and cowardly. NOTHING will erase the damage because that is the general consensus everywhere!
Decades ago I was a single mom of two kids under 3 years old and with no family. There was no health care, food stamps or daycare and I had no child support. When I became single, my job had a rotating shift and it took 2 busses to get to and from work. Paying someone to take care of my toddlers was impossible. I wound up taking in washing and ironing so I could stay home. We didn’t starve. We didn’t die. I had to hunt for doctors I didn’t owe money to when a kid got sick but we survived. We finally moved in with an older couple and we all shared living expenses. The woman took care of my children while I went back to work. Life does not depend entirely on government help. I would have loved it and life might have been better for all of us, but the wailing and gnashing of teeth I’m seeing here are a little over the top. I’m 100% Democrat but I have faith in people’s ability to cope.
Thank you Sophie. Trying to put a bow on a lose, doesn’t chance the fact that it was a lose. There is a time and place to see the glass half full, but this isn’t one of those times and if we ever want to get through this shit storm of a presidency, we need to stop being happy warriors and start being warriors.
Not old people. Merely those with an old, intractable way of thinking, looking at things. There are many who came of age in the 60s/70s who think Schumer (and anyone who supports his continued tenure) should go.
Because the fact is that it wasn’t. This was a white flag being waved with the surrender conditions being a pinky promise to bring extending the ACA for a vote in December, which will amount to Republicans either tabling the vote until the ACA expires, voting against it until it expires or Dems attempt this shutdown fight again next year in January.
That's actually a pretty good argument. But I am very unhappy with the eight who caved and the old guard leadership. I don't like that the Democrats gave up the only leverage they had right before the Thanksgiving holiday that would have put enormous pressure on tRump and his crowd to cut a deal. As is, many people will either lose their health insurance or sacrifice much to keep it. Living to fight another day will only be meaningful if Chuck Schumer is gone and the Democrats learn to play hardball to win.
Political parties have to demonstrate their utility for their constituents’ quality of life while preserving democratic values enshrined in the Constitution. Once that utility disappears behind loyalty to corporations, a self aggrandizing regime or ..the personal anxiety of being primaried—that party has lost its raison d’etat and will be defined as defunct, out of touch with voters and in the most unfortunate annals of political failures in American history. Democracy requires showing up, demonstrating character and courage above the noisy cacaphony of a typical democratic republic and insuring that the overall stable well being of the people is preeminent in governing and legislating. Maslow’s triangle of human need for survival -above a brutish existence -must be the basis of our public servants’ existence as guardians of a healthy nation. Republicans have proven to be so off course of this trajectory - and crossing the aisle to create unity above discord is their only path to avoid obsolescence. Democrats need unity behind the most noble attributes of their best and brightest.
Delusions of serving the billionaire interests is a road to ruin for this once great icon of an egalitarian nation, a destination for those escaping brutal dictatorships and human delusion.
Exactly! I'm a fed employee and I'm glad the shutdown is about to end. Shutdowns are stressful if you're a fed employee and you have no idea when it will end and when your paychecks will resume. Yes, we'll get back pay, but that doesn't help to pay the bills due now.
Easy for you to say! My death warrant was just signed! So yay! Great job! Great win! Bummer I wont have anymore treatment and wont live to see the 2028 election but hey!! Great job!!!
I agree with the positive spin. Let's take the win. I am a 78 year old person that is blessed! Until we can walk a mile in a hungry child's family and never have missed a meal yet. Stop throwing the dirt and start building for the future! OK??
We’re calling the Senators out because it wasn’t a win for Dems. People suffered needlessly for 40+ days for nothing. In the end, Dems’ unwillingness to unite, stay the course, gave the “win” to the Republicans turned MAGA. Who in their right mind (very few these days) expects the Republicans to negotiate fairly or keep their word in the days ahead?
We might “like a positive spin”, but the word is already out, far and wide, that “Democrats caved”. So Trump could say that he knows how to handle the Democrats.
It might be instructive to think about the millions of people who are not nearly as connected to politics as you and me. The so-called kitchen table voters. They have been betrayed and abandoned AGAIN by Democratic politicians.
Of course, millions of die-hard Democrats will rally around the party, just as they always have, because it’s easier to blame Republicans, or Bernie, or the people who stayed home, than to look in the mirror and admit they’ve been supporting a party that refuses to change. The textbook definition of insanity is alive and well inside the Democratic Party from top to bottom.
And here’s the part the establishment still can’t grasp - they cannot win with just the loyalists. The math isn’t there. Never has been. They need all the people they have abandoned for 40 years:
The blue-collar union workers who used to be the backbone of America
The minorities they pandered to every election but never delivered for
The small business owners crushed while Wall Street and corporate giants got tax breaks and free passes (ask any neighborhood shop competing with Walmart)
The millions who lost jobs and livelihoods to offshoring and “free trade” deals that gutted entire towns
And the 99% of America that has been bled dry by the predatory, profit-at-all-costs healthcare industry
These aren’t fringe voters. These are the people who both political parties are supposed to represent! Not, their mega-billionaire donors!!!
Democrats sold out the country. For me, they are dead. Sooner or later, everyone will realize that this was the last gasping chance the Democratic Party had to redeem itself. They failed.
I've tried to call their offices, but they are cowards! I was only able to leave three messages. The others did not have a mailbox or it was full. I am hoping that they were overwhelmed with calls! The ones that are not retiring, should be flooded with phone calls every single day!
The strongest entities are those who CAN criticize their own, tho. It may be that, in this Great Turning, traditional political parties are actually going extinct along with all other the things we have lost.
The Whos down in Whoville taught us that we don't the gifts, decorations or a roast beast to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Give the Gift of Freedom - Boycott Xmas the Economic Spending Season - not the true Christmas Holiday. For fifty days November 20 through January 8, 2026 buy life sustaining essentials only!

The Boycott Xmas Economic Slow is another imperative step in the Anti-tRump / Fight the Oligarchs Resistance. We must now go after the tRump's billionaire oligarch supporters. The Boycott Xmas puts the state of the economy in the hands of the shoppers as opposed to the workers. We must stop all unnecessary shopping at their national chain retail businesses and restaurants until the these billionaire business owners, call for the tRump's resignation themselves! Historically, economic inaction is the most effective way to bring down a dictator. All of our resistance efforts have failed because we are doing a terrible job at getting the word out and bringing in new supporters. We must support our resistance organizers. Take every opportunity to announce upcoming resistance events. The success or failure of these upcoming events are in your hands. Don't let them fail like all the others. Let this be our last attempt to Dump the tRump! Help us flood the media by promoting current events or starting new ones. Don't let the tRump defeat us!
All of our resistance efforts have failed to bring down the tRump. Even No Kings who have millions of supporters have not been able to reached enough Americans to form a successful movement. There is no movement without Calls to Action. It's up to us to spread the word - but that seems to be too big of a sacrifice for most of our citizens. The movement is growing slowly but surely. I hate to think about how much more damage the tRump regime can do before the people rise. In the meantime, every effort helps especially if you tell your friends and neighbors why and how you are personally supporting the resistance. Spread the Word!
Chuck Schumer is from the time when a handshake and a drink was all it took to cut a deal. That was then this is now. We may have lost this time but we are done yet by a long shot. The message is there. Donald Trump and his administration do not care if you live or die. More Americans are waking up to this every day.
I appreciated Lawrence O’Donnel’s perspective that the democrats didn’t cave; 5 people changed their vote in exchange for some concessions (guarantee that workers will be rehired and receive back pay, for instance), after the GOP had said there would be no negotiating. 3 had already said they’d vote to reopen, so there were only 5 that “caved” - in the interest of their constituents. Let’s not make this about the entire Democratic Party. They also have the ability to shut things down again if soft promises aren’t kept. As for Schumer, I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, but I do believe he is terrible at messaging. We need a fresh new voice!
Yes, I agree. Let's not make this about the entire Democratic Party. I did not hear Lawrence O'Donnell's comments, and I usually respect and agree with what he has to say. The Dems made their point and held out for as long as they could. Most of the people in my district are hanging this entirely on Benedict Donald and the ReTrumplicans. Tuesday's election results was a great start and they need to continue and call out the nonsense and the lies from this administration. Mike Johnson needs to stop his cowardice and bring the House back in session!
URGENT CALL FOR ACTION - Hopefully, it's not too late to stop these Democrats tRump ass kissers. Get on the phone and call these senators and demand they change their vote. Tell them to save our health care before they reopening the government! Call your representatives now. They answer 24/7! Do it now (202) 224-3121
“Here are the names I have confirmed tied to tonight’s vote to move the Republican-backed agreement: Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Angus King (I-ME), Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA).” ~Lev Parna
Shame on you all! Impeach these treasonous traitors. How much did the oligarchs pay you to betray us? Don't kiss the tRump's ass! Do not reopen the government until the Republicans agree to ending the Big Brutal Bill and restore all of our services!
Don't forget SENATOR SANDERS - SAVE OUR HEALTHCARE DAY OF ACTION! !
Monday, November 10 live streaming at noon on YouTube and will be available on YouTube after the live stream.
Just when we grab a little hope out of the stagnant fascist air with the mini-blue wave last week, the cowardly eight jerk our chain and snap us back to the grim reality of the nightmare. They need to be sent packing like Schumer, and replaced with younger, true progressives.
Strike while the iron is hot. We must not let the current regime in power continue to destroy our country and the rest of the world. Nigeria and Venezuela are next on their radar. WTF.
I thought the same until heard what Lawrence O'Donnell had to say last night on MSNBC (MS NOW as of Nov 15). Valuable, informed perspective. Worth your time. Summaries of his convo w/Maddow leading into the show do not provide the full benefit of insight O'Donnell gained from working as a legislative aide in the Senate.https://youtu.be/OZk5ZI3Iu5o
Powerful, powerful , powerful call to action. There was talk about Liz Cheney replacing the Speaker of the House. They got it wrong. Mary is our true leader and should be the Speaker.
I was delighted to learn Caroline Kennedy’s son is planing to run for congress. He may be a bit too young and immature …. He has the
credentials to go to the top. Nevertheless this gives one hope there’s help on the horizon. Like in the cowboy movies we see the cavalry at the top of the mountain with horses rearing up ready to charge. That is what we need our leader to be. Ready to fight for us.
It’s time to go to battle to take our country back.
I really don't understand what leverage the Democrats had to "negotiate" with Republican leadership. Usually, each party of the negotiation has something of value for the other party, thus, a negotiation. Republicans would rather let people go hungry and without health insurance than negotiate with the relatively powerless Democrats. This, after all, is actually the Republican end goal.
The Occupy DC conversion has begun and it's not too late to join them: This IS NOT a one day march or rally - it's a sustained celebration of the beginning of the end of the tRump's regime!
Time for the Democrats to write the narrative here - stop criticizing and complaining about each other and declare a win! Last week's elections were about wide disapproval of trump's policies, not necessarily about the government shutdown, per se.
👏👏👏 Right on, Sophie.
I like the positive spin on this. Especially at this time when of year when air travel peaks and food should be in abundance for the holidays. This administration does not care a bit about people and the GOP is too scared to go against 47. So, the Democrats “saving the season” should be shouted loud and clear for all to hear!

Decades ago I was a single mom of two kids under 3 years old and with no family. There was no health care, food stamps or daycare and I had no child support. The OLD generation should have been replaced years ago.
Not old people. Merely those with an old, intractable way of thinking, looking at things. There are many who came of age in the 60s/70s who think Schumer (and anyone who supports his continued tenure) should go.
EEEK! I am old- do not throw me away!!!!
Ah…some people are BORN old and some never age…all depends….
If this was a win, it certainly doesn’t feel like one to me.
Because the fact is that it wasn’t. Not just phone calls! It's a lot harder to ignore a big bag of postcards and letters than it ignore a blinking light on a phone.

Watch “The Last Word” with Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC last night. His perspective is different and valuable.
We need Article 25 invoked for DJT! And every last Democrat standing needs to insist upon it.
WTF.
putin and netanyahu STARTED a WAR to stay IN POWER and OUT of PRISON!!
trump IS doing the SAME THING NOW!!!
