Capitol police officer Eugene Goodman showed bravery above and beyond the call of duty on 1/6/21. He put his life on the line to protect our political leaders and to protect our democracy.

Potus 46 & Dr. Fauci. They both have put up with so much shit. Yet they both have always shown us the meaning of integrity and compassion. I would've already told Potus 45 and GOP to fuck off. So much for my integrity. Oh, well.😉

Betty White, you're a Queen in my book. Thank you for the rotflmao moments you've given me and for always touching my heart with your activism. Rest Easy.

Officer Eugene Goodman who put his life on the line 1/6/21 when he helped save lives that horrible day. I thought it was a slam dunk when times would chose person of the year but musk got it? For sending dongs into the atmosphere in space?

Gray Brechin's avatar

Definitely Eugene Goodman for outstanding heroism and honor. Was anyone ever so fittingly named? Time discredited itself by naming a slime like Musk rather than Goodman its Person of the Year.

Scientist Katalin Karikó, the woman who persevered for decades to do what nearly no one in power thought could be done: developed the mRNA technology that powers the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines (which is just the beginning).

Valorie, I worked in non-clinical research for 40 years. Over the years, I met several PhDs who had to leave academia for the private sector due to lack of grants. That she was able to find a bench and keep it going was amazing. When I read this article in the New York Times, I was just in awe of her persistence. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/08/health/coronavirus-mrna-kariko.html

Actually, I think the good "guy" should be Mary L. Trump. Those two books, if fully heeded, would transform our world.

I loved both of Mary Trump's books

Liz Cheney. She is putting her political career on the line in search of the truth. The truth shall make us free.

And President Joe Biden!

She’s a giant in the senate. I remember when Rachel Maddow really supported her efforts in the presidential race. Smart, tough and willing to fight without apologizing.

E Jean, Interesting choice Can Uou Elaborate?

I am from Minnesota. She’s my Senator. I love her. There was some issue about her not pursuing some prosecution of police officers when she was attorney general in MN. It was a long time ago, but the GOP would have made hay of it. I don’t remember the exact circumstances of it. But there was no way she could have overcome the negativity in our state. Just admitting she was wrong about something 20-odd years ago would not have been enough in todays political climate. She bowed out before it became national news on Fox.

She would have made a great president. She’s really smart, on the correct side of all the issues, and can read the national mood. She remains in the game for future elections because she bowed out in the last.

She was one of the Presidential candidates I sent money too.

Chef Jose Andres, founder of World Central Kitchen (and great restaurants!)

And

Stacey Abrams, Georgia, voting rights wonder-woman and a crucial factor in the 2020 election

Many good people mentioned here in these comments, but a lot of it all couldn't have happened without Biden.

Joe Biden. Whatever his faults, he has returned decency and humanity to the White House.

Officer Goodman of Capitol Police ! Mitt Romney owes him HUGELY!

I’m going with Liz Cheney as the “good guy”. I don’t agree with her on policy on just about anything, but her willingness to stand up against TFG in the face of his bullying and the abuse she has taken from her own party is heartening.

Joe Biden for what he has accomplished and for being a honorable man

Jose Andres…I think World Central Kitchen does God’s work responding to every disaster!

The frontline & healthcare workers, along with the scientists who created the vaccines, are the good guys of last year.

So far collectively we've battled through this pandemic, and together is the only way we'll win this war on Covid.

THIS AN IMPORTANT CHOICE!

Definitely Officer Eugene Goodman - there should be a statue of him placed in the exact spot where he stood his ground and pointed to the exit, as seen in the famous photo that preceded his quick actions to save the lives of the Vice President and likely several members of the Senate.

I embrace so many of the other nominees here, but I’m going with President Joseph Biden for 2021‼️

Good Guy of the Year: Jamie Raskin

Nella's avatar

There are so many reasons I nominated the people I chose in my earlier comment: Joe Biden, Dr. Fauci, Dr. Peter Hotez, Liz Cheney, Jamie Raskin, Nancy Pelosi -

This quality stands out for me.

In the face of relentless attacks and probably more serious threats to their lives than we'll ever know, they've acted out of integrity and have stood up for doing the right thing, in spite of the costs to themselves personally.

But what's even more striking to me about Joe Biden is that he is still kind, compassionate, and empathetic. We can see this in the interactions we witness with little kids and people who've endured catastrophe out in the world. It takes strength of character and commitment to not be chewed up by the incredible stress he's under and to maintain his humanity.

I've had the good fortune to be under the care of a cardiac specialist who is unfailingly kind and compassionate, in spite of the stress the health care system puts him and everyone else under. Because of the humility involved in having this strength of character, I'm not sure that it's celebrated enough, but I find it to be a tremendously powerful quality in a person and appreciate it very much.

I also love how Biden throws some awesome shade when necessary. :)

Our Auntie Trump ~ The Maryest Trump of all!

As it says in my profile, Mary Trump Fan, It Said ML Trump at first, but that got too much skepticism until I changed to simply Mary Trump fan, both her books not only educated me. They made me look clearly in the mirror and make behavioral changes to myself BASED on her interpretations Alone!

Joe Biden. He turned the other cheek.

Robin Payes's avatar

Agreed! Jamie Raskin suffered through our--and his personal--annus horribilis with strength, grace and determination to serve and fight for Truth. He also happens to represent my Congressional district in Maryland. #Courage!

Definitely celebration!

For me, it's a toss-up between these two Capitol police officers: Michael Fanone and Eugene Goodman, both of whom exhibited bravery under horrible circumstances, risking their lives.

My vote is for Historian Heather Cox Richardson, whose nearly daily “Letters From An American” have cogently chronicled the difficult TFG years through now. She expertly puts the firehose of current events into historical perspective with her calm accounting of facts woven into events in history teaching us how Americans in other times have risen to achieve impossible feats in challenging times. Her letters have formed a community of Americans committed to saving Democracy, showing how social media can be used to promote the good in all of us. She has certainly saved my mental health and others’ too!

Every single "guy"named is the one to be celebrated. Maybe the Best Good Person of the Year is The Village, because it has taken one to help us through the mess and it'll take one to move us forward.
