They are still being followers of the trumpy ideal of always looking out for themselves and not the country. No matter what they say.

Suzanne Tollefson's avatar

True. Everything was fine until gas prices went up.

Nancy Fauser's avatar

I assume that your comment is sarcasm.

Suzanne Tollefson's avatar

You assume correctly. MAGA followers were okay with all of the damage, dysfunction, corruption and cruelty until it affected them.

Great column!! About time this was said! Republicans have always been nasty, selfish and dangerous. This didn't happen overnight or in a vacuum.

Stephen Brady's avatar

They have progressively developed a sense that they and, they alone are entitled to govern despite plenty of evidence of their terrible incompetence. We must start calling this out. Obstruction of governance is not governance. I think the impending tRump recession will set up a massive realignment in November. Then we must set about fixing the Constitution so this cannot happen again.

Nancy Fauser's avatar

How about:

1. A complete physical including thorough cognitive testing and a psychological evaluation required of each person when an election has narrowed down to the final two candidates;

2. Eliminate the Electoral College forever. The popular vote by the American People should decide who becomes President of the United States;

3. Congressional limits on executive orders;

4. TERM LIMITS for Congress members;

5. Mandatory retirement age for members of the Supreme Court;

Just to begin with.

Anything else?

I suggest taking the citizenship test (that incoming immigrants take and must pass in order to be a citizen). Maybe the test should be a little more involved than that. You must have basic knowledge of the Constitution, what basic rights are, what makes a citizen, what is habeas corpus, have a basic understanding of the three branches of government and their functions, what is legal and what is not legal.

I am betting that most of the Congress could not pass this test today, as they have shown their lack of willingness to uphold their oaths to the Constitution. Do they not understand that they did not take an oath to protect the President? That they should be country over party, EVERY time?

It would also be a good idea that there should also be a test that shows understanding basic economics and how taxation works.

This should be an applicable for ALL representatives and senators, judges, members of the cabinet, the President and Vice President, as well as their advisors and aides.

If you don’t understand what this country is about, then you shouldn’t serve its people.

Also: no stock market trading for members of the government as well as their families. I don’t know if this is still allowed or not.

Stephen Brady's avatar

Proportional representation in the House in all states. End Citizens United. Make a President susceptible to investigation and indictment if a Special Prosecutor finds evidence of felonious behavior. Expand the Supreme Court to 13 members with term limits and automatic ascension of the Chief Judge of each Circuit in order.

Trump has always been unqualified, incompetent, and cruel. Never was presidential material. The voters who put the imbecile into the Presidency are directly responsible for the destruction Trump has brought to this country.

David Maceira's avatar

Don't forget Mitch McConnell, the GQP and the corrupt 6 of 9 SCOTUS that empowered, protected and emboldened this monster.

I believe that it was F-Elon and Vlad who put him here now.

SeekingReason's avatar

Abby, Yes! That duo Putin & Musk put the criminal in the White House

Maria Pickworth's avatar

You cannot totally blame them as a lot of your own people voted for him and 1/3 did not vote at all so 2/3 of your population should also be held responsible for what is happening to your country and the world.

SeekingReason's avatar

“My own people”? What is that supposed to mean? And No! Not enough people voted for trump to win. Hillary won the popular vote by 3 million, Biden won by 8 million…then suddenly you think Putin & Musk didn’t cheat him in. Several Republicans spoke FOR Harris at the Democratic Convention…not the case for several Dems speaking for trump. Yet after losing the popular vote twice, he then wins it? BS

And your stats need to-be checked: 174 million are registered voters, 154M cast votes. Yes, groups stayed home and that could have made the difference. It is easy to manipulate 3million more votes but almost impossible to manipulate 8 million more.

Refer to Greg Palast: Trump List, Voter Suppression won.

SeekingReason's avatar

That should be Trump Lost Voter Suppression Won by Greg Palast

Michael's avatar

I have the feeling that 1/3 did vote, but was removed by musk. If you remember, trump stated on the air, "musk is a computer wiz, he knows how to do things with them" then the same day, musk stated he (helped trump win).

McConnell is a hypocrite. When Antonin Scalia died, he stalled the process of replacing him because it was “too close to the election,” which was months away. Hmm…Obama was near the end of his term limit, and when Trump came into office, he had a SC vacancy waiting for him.

When Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, he rushed the process to conform Amy Comey Barrett. Trump was near the end of his first term and his approval ratings were low, largely because of his avarice and cruelty during the COVID lockdowns. (To say he “mishandled” it is too kind; it would “excuse “ him for poor judgement rather than mendacity.)

All the while, he professed his dislike of Trump while it he and his wife made bank from it.

ETTD, before the presidency Mary, he failed at everything seeking bankruptcy now he WILL bankrupt the country. That is the plan his tendencies don’t change even the miserable failures are magical wins. Nobody is buying it anymore there are no new grifts out there we’ve learned. Somebody tell him because he really doesn’t get it.

Sky Blue's avatar

trump WILL stick around as long as he can still squeeze another nickel out of the American Treasury and the American taxpayers...

Because that's what GRIFTERS do!

Elise Rosen-Levin's avatar

The question is if we get rid of him, we get Vance, similarly unhinged - (racist, liar, self-serving narcissist, white supremacist, fascist), but younger and slightly smarter. Then there is the entire MAGA cult and the rest of the Rethuglican party - still dangerous and threatening our democracy with corrupt lust for power.

Heather's avatar

I whole-heartedly agree with ur comment. Vance is 100% beholden to Peter Thiel (who is quoted saying that freedom and democracy cannot co-exist). He is 100% committed to Project 2025 and all of its regressive, misogynistic, racist and bigoted tropes. He is a dyed-in-the-wool white nationalist using the (anti)-christian nationalist platform. He is just as cruel as Trump and equally as unhinged. He is less concerned with enriching himself - he is motivated by an agenda much more terrifying than richer billionaires.

Hound's avatar

This may shock you but I don’t think Hitler actually hated the Jews. He didn’t have enough humanity even in order to hate. He saw them as an opportunity to get unlimited power so he made them goat.

Vance is probably the same way so they will take any path available to them if they think it will help them reach their goal. Supposedly, 4% of the population are sociopaths. They have evil ambitions and they are scourge. Purge the scourge. SPAY & NEUTER!

mer t's avatar

Still dangerous but disliked

Yodagirl's avatar

My sentiments exactly ERL!

Hound's avatar

We have to get rid of a lot more than Vance and politicians. We gotta get rid of the people the politicians actually work for and those are the corporate criminals and billionaire criminals who are still above the law.

MAGA is far less of a threat than corporate criminal elite. When a MAGA breaks the law they get brought to justice. The MAGA is just as oppressed as the rest of us. The MAGA means nothing to the ruling class. All we are to them are serfs, props, taxpayers and consumers and ultimately cash cows.

Obscenely wealthy and powerful are the enemy. They have about the same level of humanity as a MAGAT but they have power and privilege that the MAGAT doesn’t have.

Sky Blue's avatar

BUT as with the MOB...

When Gambino died in his bed ..

ALL the capos went after each other and their organization died off, too.

The maga cult is ONLY LOYAL to its leader. trump IS the ONLY one they really trust. trump IS their Messiah!

And as DECADES of HISTORY have shown us ALL...

trump has NO LOYALTY to ANYONE ELSE EVER!

America SUFFERS now ...but the maga cult regime WILL suffer worse!

I used to think I wanted trump to live long enough to destroy ALL his sychopants... Now I just want him gone.

America WILL rebuild on a more solid base...and so Will the whole World!!

Helen Stajninger's avatar

But I don’t think Vance has the cult following

Tracey Queripel's avatar

One at a time maybe. Vance is smarter and more evil, but he lacks the charisma required to hold Trump’s cult together.

Steve Wheeler's avatar

Vance must go as well. 25th and a half.

Valerie's avatar

Agreed. I’ve wondered the same thing. Vance doesn’t seem to be as “like able” or “charismatic” as Trump (if those words can even be used to describe him). Maybe the MAGA cult would lose interest and start to peel away from Vance. Maybe not; there seems to be plenty of hate going around. These days it’s hard to say. Unfortunately the bad actors behind the curtain are still there. The creators of Project 2025, the oligarchs, the enablers, the evil thread that has weaved its way into everything. Another reader suggests “spay and neuter.” Indeed!

sharon Maxey's avatar

Well, I guess that sounds right, as far as strategies go.

But really—I’m not buying the rebrand, either.

They can all go fuck ALL THE WAY OFF, and then turn around and fuck ALL THE WAY OFF, again.

Diana Bosco's avatar

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Diana, ha! Admittedly, a bunch of folks have been groomed over the past 50 years to support whatever Republicans do and condemn anything Democrats suggest, which has made it so hard after each Republican administration for Dems to clean up, getting only about 50 days to clean up 4 to 8 years of destruction. It amazes me that Democrats have done as well as they have each time. Those groomed souls are ready in the wings to vote for Republicans again no matter how inept, disgusting, unqualified, unworthy the candidate is, then they whine that their prices are too high, their wages too low, the cost of gas is too high, they can't afford medical care, and on and on. Hmmm! I wonder who caused all those problems they whine over!

mer t's avatar

I think Diana is being sarcastic

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Mer T, yep, she definitely was, gotta love it!

Kim Boucher's avatar

I don't really think it's the r's who are whining

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Kim, I hear them interviewed on our local news and other places. They then say they voted for Trump or still support him anyway. Of course they whine, but somehow cannot see that those they are supporting are those who are causing their problems, not the Democrats. Reality is hard for Trumplandia.

Don Harmon's avatar

My fear is that the obvious mental and physical deterioration of Our Grand Dictator, and the resultant public rejection of him, will lead to a problem as in his first and second elections. Democratic voters stayed home by the tens of millions in both, creating a default winner by their apathy.

The gross and shocking Democratic voter disloyalty in those two elections has gravely damaged our country, and now, with the new, apparently failed war in Iran, has alienated and damaged much of the world.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Yeah, dementia, like Trump's takes away any guardrails that might have been present in an already appalling life. I can honestly not think of one positive thing to say about Donald Trump, none. I can usually note something positive about a person, but the person I refer to as Baby Donnie has no redeeming qualities and will bring us all down if we don't find ways to stop him and his white house toddler pool (which includes his cabinet, the Roberts 6 on our Supreme Court, and most of the Republicans and a few Democrats in Congress and state legislatures. It sounds like a lot of folks, but it isn't many if We the People chose to stand up to them!!
