You’re one of my biggest heroes Mary. Keep up the great work, and thank you. 🙏

“We do not want this. We did not ask for this. You did not consult us before starting this, and therefore we owe you nothing.”

We can say that, too. My congressional representatives were not allowed to debate or vote on starting a war that my tax dollars are financing.

Does that constitute taxation without representation?

Yanah G Cook's avatar

Yes it does! And. It’s been going for some time.

MLKanada's avatar

As a Canadian, I fully agree. Enough.

Emma's avatar

No. They voted on war powers. One dem senator and 4 dem house voted with trump.

Don Draper's avatar

Actually, the war powers resolution the House and Senate voted on was to curtail America’s war with Iran instead, both chambers voted it down.

Cynthia Marchant's avatar

This was only after the war had already been started by tRump & Netanyahoo wasn't it?

Emma's avatar

Yes. If you are aware of historical examples where this was done differently, I am very open to learning.

Republican Majority Chambers which Democrats seem unable to whip a few votes. Neither side Red or Blue is talking, dining or possibly going down the same halls together.

I can see why young people like Mamdani and the Forward Progressive Party,. Andrew Wang.

james wheaton (Jay)'s avatar

Of course it does. However, my representatives seem all good with it. Such is it to live in a backward red state like Tennessee.

Linda Laz's avatar

He needs to be trapped and caged before he really loses it. Let’s put him away!

Cathy Loiacono's avatar

He needs to be put down like any rabid animal.

Margaret Macelis's avatar

I never voted for him. He should be known as the biggest mobster in American history. Include the Kushners in that too.

LJ57's avatar

It is almost an insult to mobsters

They have a code of conduct

Declan's avatar

that's why Epstein said he was the most terrible person he's ever met. He is totally amoral. His brain needs to be analyzed for abnormalities

Michael's avatar

He is a wannabe mobster. Just using the American people to line his pockets and to gain the power, he thinks he is king of the world, just like a 5-year-old thinks during playing, but he thinks it is for real.

Jacquilyn's avatar

Mary you are 100 percent correct he put us all in danger, we didn’t ask for this and the supreme court’s need to intervene and STOP HIM NOW if it’s not to late, how can he do whatever he wants without being held responsible? I can’t imagine what these idiots are so afraid of. He’s not in office long and they are cowards who will do anything to appease him yet the orange mess will cut them apart in a nano second. I’ve never seen this before in my life but everyday I am afraid of what is next and if you haven’t noticed the people in our country look exhausted again from him . He goes on rants at 2-3 am in the morning!!! Who with a normal brain does this? Good God please someone save our country now please

LJ57's avatar

I agree with your comment

Two things are out of place when referring to chump:

1. Normal

2. Brain

Cara Lopez's avatar

I don't think he is writing all this. I think others in his cabinet are scripting messages for him so the rants can go on non-stop. No one can stay awake 24 hours a day for days on end unless they're on drugs! Even then, the body will eventually collapse.

Mickey8255's avatar

Can I say ADDERALL?? I used to have face to face ( twee to tweets ) with him BACK IN THE DAY ( @ middle of the night) on TWITTER before musk bought it and he was TOTALLY EFF’ED UP ON ADDERALL BACK THEN!! He was a freaking Mess!

Jeannine Regan's avatar

No. He sleeps during meetings.

Declan's avatar

yes....I thought I heard that there is a program so you can pre set tweets to go out at certain times. It's like 'constant contact' business advertisements. The relentless tweets terms at 2a give him the aura of a guy that's always involved, watching, etc

Who would have thought MTG was the smartest person. If she runs again she will have integrity on her side. The rest can’t see past the next election.

Carol's avatar

I don't trust MTG at all. She is like a chameleon. Changing her colors to go with her surroundings. She'll switch back again as soon as she needs to. She's really playing up to the MAGA base.

james wheaton (Jay)'s avatar

Beware Sally - MTG has shown us her colors already. She has not come around at all; she got stiffed by Trump when she wanted to run for Senator, and jumped ship. Even Lauren Boebert is complaining about Trump and this war. Both these idiots are dyed in the wool MAGA zenophobes, and all that entails.

Douglas Paul Truhlar's avatar

You must be joking. Integrity, never it’s over for her.

Bonnie K's avatar

Do a little research on Roy Cohen if you dont know about him. He was a friend of Trumps father and was his mentor. the three of them were basically slime. My Dad was a NYPD Dyesctive and was in a special unit. They escorte d dignitaries when they came to NYC. Roy Cohen and Joe McCarthy were here often, so he became familiar with them. It didn’t end well for either of them. My Dad did fine but was very Leary of the two of them.

Next November can be described as the opportunity to create a US Congress, House AND Senate, that can say no to the POS POTUS, before removing him from power and consigning him to courtroom attendance if not prison for the rest of his days, as well as stripping him and his family of the wealth acquired through his office as US president.

They had damn well better. Trump has exposed just how fragile your democratic AND republican institutions are. Fortunately Trump is stupid as well as malevolent, next time you may get someone who while malevolent or fascistic ISN'T dumb. Look abroad for examples.

Wanda Thompson's avatar

Glad my country Canada also said no (even thought we weren’t ‘asked’), and despite being economically bullied and our sovereignty repeatedly threatened directly by Trump for over a year. The fact that your country has been unable to stand up to this maniacal toddler yourselves is something to reflect on, because Trump as your president is a problem you have brought on yourselves but seem unable to meaningfully address

miyovo's avatar

"The fact that your country has been unable to stand up to this maniacal toddler yourselves is something to reflect on, because Trump as your president is a problem you have brought on yourselves but seem unable to meaningfully address": exactly right.

Declan's avatar

Just as the social Democrats thought in 1932 Germany that Hitler could be contained, they still gave him power. Then look what happened.

Bonnie K's avatar

You have a new leader. He’s a very bright guy. Got things straightened out quickly.Happy for you😊

james wheaton (Jay)'s avatar

Wanda - We as a people here in the US are not alone in doing incredibly stupid things at the ballot box. Boris Johnson and the UK come to mind. Not to mention post WW1 Germany and you-know-who. And watch out for some of the European countries. France and Italy and even Germany among others have strong far right wing influences attempting to get into power, and their people might just allow it. I believe that people will be people no matter the country, and will vote with their pocket books every time regardless of the longer term ramifications. I will give you this - Americans (meaning the USA) have a special blend of religiosity, cowboy mentality, and a disdain for expertise and higher knowledge that can combine to make an especially toxic stew. Not sure how Canadians avoided that, given our histories are so similar.

Wanda Thompson's avatar

Yes there are other bad nations and bad leaders, but USA is really owning this space in a way no one else has for say, 80 years or so. Canada is fighting against a toxic right wing also, and so far have kept it at bay, although interference from our former southern ally isn’t helping. And we are really not like the US at all. And sorry, but Canadians have never been as arrogant, self important, intolerant and bigoted as Americans.

Jeannine Regan's avatar

Yes, it is a case study for sociologists, and you are correct in your observations! A toxic brew that has begun to stink as its aged.

Wade Baynham's avatar

Amen, and thank you again for your great clarity and courage. 'Our allies are beginning to understand something that people inside the U.S. government often pretend not to understand: weakening Donald politically is actually good for the United States, and it is good for the rest of the world.'

YES!!

Declan's avatar

So Wade, you are saying that Schumers strategy of 'playing dead' & just watching him screw up, & hoping Americans get fed up is a bad strategy?? 😅

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Thank you Mary! I have been referring to Donald Trump's behavior for more than a decade as toddleresque but the response from others has always been, well, that's just Donald Trump. I agree with that, but he has always had toddleresque behavior which he has been able to get away with. People think rich people are OK doing whatever they want to do! That is just plain wrong and telling the toddler "no" is a good idea, from earliest age onward. No one of consequence told this Trumpian toddler to stop and so he continues and drags us all down. The one good thing is that if the renewable energy folks have the resources, they should be pushing electric cars and solar panels and generators as quickly as they can so people will see that they do save money and do work without most of the side effects. Wind energy infrastructure needs to be pushed too while we are all down so we can know that oil needs to be gone and cutting off the Strait of Hormuz is not as bad a thing as people might think.

Candace Lynn Talmadge's avatar

Israel is along for the ride. The real levers behind the Iran insanity are the Saudis. They win any way you slice it, starting with higher oil prices. And since the Saudis are the de facto Trump family trust fund, our president listens to what they tell him in phone calls that are never revealed. They said invade Iran, so he did.

donna's avatar

Except they live right next door and are also being bombed. They're losing oil structure. I expect their chief murderer is not best pleased right now.

Candace Lynn Talmadge's avatar

Probably not. I also suspect that Putin did his best to get Trump into a war with Iran as well. He's winning hands down. I wonder how long Ukraine can hold on, but at least Zelenskyy made some demands when Trump begged Ukraine for anti drone help. What an utter fuckup.

Declan's avatar

How many of those demands will D honor??

Bruce Beyer's avatar

Should we be concerned that DJT will expand his illegal actions to places like Cuba to try to demonstrate his power? The impotent members of Congress should be checking him, but they have to grow a spine to do so.

donna's avatar

I expect that if he thinks he looks like he's failing to get his way in the Middle East, he will certainly attack Cuba. Sooner rather than later. He will keep going until he is stopped. And he won't be stopped until enough Republicans decide they're at risk, politically and economically. They will do their best to stay in control through Vance and company - so I suspect Article 25 would be their choice, rather than an oh-so-public impeachment. Or perhaps a 'convenient unfortunate illness' will take him out of their way. What I hope for is an election that is massively anti-trump - even in "safe" Republican districts and states. I think most of his corporate and political backers are most afraid of that, and they will try to avoid it by dumping the Donald, one way or another. I guess it depends on how crazy and fanatic they are.

LJ57's avatar

There are greater risks than the political and the economic. Why the guardians of pedophiles don’t think these other risks apply to themselves is a mystery. They all have loved ones somewhere as do the rest of us.

donna's avatar

I’m not sure they do have people they love. I expect they have people they feel a sense of possession and familiarity about, and people who are useful, easily manipulated, entertaining, or look good for the cameras. I don’t think they are capable of much empathy or love, for others.

Bonnie K's avatar

That is so egregious. We need to deal with that. It will not happen with Trump in the White House. #1 Predator.

Jacquilyn's avatar

I truly believe Jared had a lot to do with the situation in Israel I don’t care what anybody says he was there days before orange duke started this he went there to talk and 2 days later we were in a fight with Iran , he’s a sneak just like his daddy hoo…..

miyovo's avatar

You are amazing Mary. I hope the World politicians you said NO in our names us Europeans will hear you and spread your wisdom and knowledge about this man who does not deserve to be called a HUMAN he is a MENACE. Never seen since the years 1920 - 1945 and beyond with the Russians who are no better. My parents were 20 in 1939 France and I never saw them giggle or not afraid as I know can understand what I just could not understand as a little and as a young adult in France until now and I cannot asked them questions anymore. They are in my thoughts everyday. Thanks again Mary to be what you are. Amazing.

Susan Thompson's avatar

Thank you Mary ! This is a brilliant, insightful and thoughtful commentary on a horrific decision Donald made, without the approval of Congress, our Allies or the American people. He has literally changed the course of History, destabled the lives of millions of people across the entire Middle East, neighboring countries and all of our Allies. There is no way out, we are in a forever War, certainly one that I will never live to see end. I agree with every word you said.. World Leaders standing up and finally saying NO is music to my ears. For the first time in his miserable, pathetic life, he has absolutely no one to bail him out. He can't bully or sue his way out of this. Thump your chest, stomp your feet, threaten all you want Donald, this time your usual tactics will not work. The entire world has finally said NO !! A resounding and collective NO. I do believe, ultimately this will break him. If course, this rebuke will make him more dangerous than he already is,but it had to happen. Mary, this is your BEST Article you have ever written, in my humble opinion.Up until this, "Dining With Serial Killers" was my favorite. THIS article is extraordinary. I've read it three times already, each time, I glean more from your powerful and thought provoking commentary. Thank you Mary, I appreciate your work more than you know, especially in these uncertain times.

William Ozanick's avatar

Thank you, Susan, for your terrific follow-up. This is, indeed, one of Mary's finest commentaries. She has given us so much of her unlimited time and knowledge and I believe we are extremely fortunate to gain access to what is the absolute truth about Benedict Donald. I am keeping the faith that our democracy will stand its ground and that karma will one day reign supreme.
