Now why would he choose that commodity, out of the blue, for an exemption? Could it have something to do with the fact that The Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), a Belgian trade organization, recently gifted Donald Trump a lavish, watch-sized ring encrusted with 321 diamonds to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States?
I’m not sure why I’m writing about this because so many of you who commented before me have already engaged on the subject: Why are so many American citizens still supporting this moral wreck of a human being?
We know why Congress supports him-that’s an easy one. We know why the sycophants that make up his “administration,” (I put this word in quotation marks because it really isn’t an administration, it’s simply a group of greedy and sick toadies) know-tow to him, but why would [supposedly] ordinary citizens support him?
Even if they only watch Fox for their general news, they would never be able to avoid hearing about his corruption and his failure to deliver his promises to them; they only need go to a grocery store and find that a carton of eggs costs, on average, $6, or that a loaf of wheat bread costs $5, and that virtually every other item on the shelves is more expensive, and I’m not even mentioning energy costs. They need only to talk to family, friends, or acquaintances who serve in the military to learn of his disastrous and unnecessary war, and only the most sequestered of them don’t know of his vast corruption.
Mary, you are a Phd, a doctor of the mind; can you help us understand? You’ve brilliantly described the president’s illnesses (I’ve read your books,) but can you help to explain to us why, why, why do they still come to his Nuremberg style rallies and his ridiculous speeches? Why do they laugh at his pathetic “jokes” and cruel imitations, and that dance, that revolting dance? Why do they read his nightly screeds and look at his delusional AI depictions and not recognize that anyone who portrays himself as Jesus, is horribly, horribly sick?

Have you ever read Alberto Moravia’s “The Conformist” or seen Bernardo Bertolucci’s film based on it? I believe they explore the very question you pose: Why do people align themselves with leaders or movements who are ultimately detrimental to themselves. One part of the answer is that they feel downtrodden and said leader or movements promise to go after the people who supposedly caused their misery, whether or not they actually had anything to do with it.
She was fantastic. I loved those writers who, in my mind, reflected the Will Rogers style of discourse; yet Molly Ivans was a unique gem of a human being. Remember when she used to do a counterpunch-style of debate at the end of Sixty Minutes? God, that was a million years ago, back when we still lived in the United States.
We know Trump's on a moral, ethical and cognitive decline...but how do you account for his supporters? That's where the real problem exists. The world is full of nut-jobs, but they don't always gain the widespread traction achieved by DJT.
I love to see his approval rating decline on a daily basis...maybe the "masses" are coming to the realization that "he" is defying everything they were taught in school, their house of worship as ethically and morally WRONG. Trump is the culmination of all that, combined with the capitalism-über-alles crowd that's characterized upper-echelon Republicans since the early 20th century at least.

'The Apprentice' was real, and that both baffled and infuriated me.
The show was scripted and it has been verified that he had trouble just getting through the daily script reading. None of it was ‘real’. But sadly many were fooled.
And what does this excellent analysis say about those who are not his obvious sycophants, i.e Congress, Cabinet, etc, in which his power makes them more powerful? How about his immigrant wife? His young son? How about the undocumented immigrants he employs at Mar a Lago, but ICE doesn't visit there, as far as I know?
