It is hard to get good information when everything one does points them to bad information, lies, and more and they often don't even have or take the time to double check. We do need to teach people to set better priorities. One of those should be to get informed before voting, and not just by the folks one has been consuming the rest of the year. We need a citizenry that can spot disinformation and not gullibly believe everything that’s offered by whatever “news” sources they consume. Cat, the problem, Trump and his toddler pool for years have been groomed to prey on people who are on the edge or people who have come to believe that they deserve more than they have. The structure of our society has created a whole lot of them. They watch Fox/Sinclair, etc. because those folks keep the message alive that they are super-worthy and that someone as pathetic as Trump not only has their backs, but will take out the woke, the libs, those whom they think are the haves, and do it on their behalf. They avoid reminding those folks of the wealth of the disgustingly rich because they might see the scam and that they are being used. In addition, Trumpers and Trumpettes often are working people whose jobs are overwhelming and don't pay a decent wage, they have more kids than they can manage, and they are also told that is the Democrats' fault. Another group of those folks is conservative christian, willing to "believe" whatever their pastor tells them because, of course, he is the voice of god and they must obey. They live in mostly white communities that are closed to anyone who is not like them and have also been encouraged to hate anyone who does not belong: immigrants, people of color, independent women, and more. Hatred is probably the most powerful emotion along with resentment. Trump knows those emotions well and knows how to feed them so they will grow and morph into something monstrous, permitting Trump and his toddlers to do whatever they want because they can always come up with an excuse for their messenger from god's behavior. How do we reach this cult, it is not clear because for them, belonging and being in the right are critical elements of their lives.
Agreed. The problem or reason this is happening, is that most of the country lives in a news desert, meaning the only information they get is from the propaganda machine. It’s a massive brainwashing operation to keep large swaths of the country under control.
Cat, you are right. I find it hard to blame the voters, but I do hold them responsible when they complain that things are going poorly for them. It is hard to get good information when everything one does points them to bad information, lies, and more and they often don't even have or take the time to double check. We do need to teach people to set better priorities. One of those should be to get informed before voting, and not just by the folks one has been consuming the rest of the year. Different ideas can help people expand their understanding, if they choose to let it.
In this era of disinformation, a major skill is learning how to be a discerning information consumer. We need a citizenry that can spot disinformation and not gullibly believe everything that’s offered by whatever “news” sources they consume. All information is biased - it’s understanding the nature of the bias and the underlying truthfulness of the “facts” as presented that needs to be learned.
Cat, maybe we need to make finding media disinformation a game of some kind with small but worthy prizes for those who find them and can write the truth. It could be overseen by a university that has not caved to Trump's forced stupidity. The information could be sent en masse to the sites that published the lies and maybe the state where their main office is located could help to publish the truth with the names of those who lied on its website. There are ways to stop a lot of this insanity if there were a will and there does not seem to be much of a will these days.

My aunt is in one and it costs $7000 a month for bottom of the barrel care (it’s appalling) which the company brags about record profits. All of the nice people who I have met who have dementia and are in that facility? What happens to them? They gutted Medicaid and did so as a choice. They did it because they hate the poor, and they benefit. We are literally looking at all of these vulnerable people who already don’t have family who show up or are willing and able to take care of them because if that was true, they wouldn’t be in a nursing home.
So all of these people get to.. what? Die?
I get to deal with the stress and very real potential that yet again, I will die because I can’t afford $16,000 because I was born with a genetic disease.
