Earlier today, I wrote the following comment on another substack account and its content is particularly pertinent to Mary and Thom’s discussion. It’s about the various similarities between Hitler before the 3rd Reich fell and the challenges we as nation are currently experiencing.

Huh. This particular comment immediately caught my attention, primarily because last night I watched the movie DOWNFALL. And I couldn’t help but think about djt’s buddy, Adolf. So I did a quick research/ analysis of the similarities between djt and the fuhrer.
The first article was published on January 20, 2025, when Trump first took office in his second term, and when his political agenda was quickly established as a dictator wannabe.
In any case, the similarities between the two are strikingly similar. Is anyone reading this actually surprised?

Will our military turn against the people as we know ICE will, and has? We do need to stand up together and even if Trump declares an emergency, the states should still go right along with elections and keep Trump's goons from touching our ballots or messing with our tallying machines. Hand-counting would work. We do have to find ways around this fascist regime! We might have to swear the new congress in early.

I believe the 80 year thing has to do with the third and forth generation after an event has not been given the same information about the experience. We do not tend to teach the experience of "history repeats itself because we have forgotten what brings us there." The 2nd generation feels the parent's electric response. By the third and fourth generation, the power of lessons learned have moved on to other thoughts, issues and more. The power of the experience - amd why- has not necessarily been carried forward. Look at the change from being in WWII because we want to stop genocide of people, to today, whether looking at Israeli leaders and peoples, or what the U.S. is doing with our people.
I am concerned about the limited understanding of the need for change within the Democratic Party as well. There seems to be a significant need to get rid of the "let's say this and while we also get rich as politicians."
Kin, good points about the generations. I’m in my 60s. As a child we were constantly reminded of the evils of the Nazis. Today I fear it’s become all too distant and the spread of conspiracy theory and hate speech makes it worse. People have forgotten the horrors or simply lack imagination. I suspect many Magas don’t see what is happening as evil or think it is just being blown out of proportion by ‘liberals’, or they simply have an authoritarian mindset. It is the duty of politicians to protect the people from this kind of regime from being created and in this regard they failed. .
Here in the UK we have this same drift to the right because people have forgotten the lessons of WW2. But there are signs here of pushback, but before the fascists take over.
