Andy Borowitz: Monday’s Inauguration will see the temperature and IQ dive into the twenties, according to official forecasts.

That figure will not be a historically low temperature but will be a record low IQ, experts say.

Jesus said that if you bless and pray for your enemies it’s like dumping hot coals on their heads. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Jo Ellen Washburn's avatar

In recovery, I learned to pray for those i resented - to pray for them to have what I wanted. It helps dissolve the resentment. I want to be peaceful, kind, compassionate. I'd hope for those things for the MAGAts, but honestly, I want 47 to stroke out.

Maureen Mannion's avatar

I like the first part of your message. I think it was the Dalai Lama who said even the worst among us have a spark of goodness in them. We may have to dig deep to find it but it's there and worth supporting.

Check out the trial of the Waukesha Christmas Parade Attacker, Darrell Brooks. You'll change your mind about that spark of goodness.

Oh, amen! I'm a retired counselor who didn't like all my clients but absolutely loved 98% of them. I remember one in particular who scared me to the depths of my soul. One only need read about, say, Andrei Chikatilo (or Joseph Stalin or Adolph Hitler or fucking Donald Trump) to know that some people are just born evil.

Oh, wait, Hitler was traumatized by not getting into art school! Oh, wait, Trump received no love from his father! These fuckers were flawed. It's called sociopathy. History knows.

Yeah I learned in recovery that to release from the bondage of resentment, one must forgive. That’s one of the paths to serenity promised in the 12 steps. I have a hard time taking your recovery seriously when you denigrate people by calling them magats or wishing harm on the president.

And let’s not forget the #1 block to seeking truth and a cardinal sin in the journey to serenity. And that’s “Contempt prior to investigation”

I see a lot of contempt in here and as the upcoming investigations unfold on the J6 committee, the 51 intel officers that just got stripped of their security clearances, the weaponized DOJ, the gain of function research, the perjury etc. as these investigations happen it behooves any individual that seeks truth to throw away your bias, and look at the testimonies objectivity, as opposed to subjectively. That’s the path to serenity.

Pat Duke's avatar

May also be path to fascism, but, hey, at least you’ll be serene

Higgins's avatar

Yeah I know! Did you see Barack and Hitler laughing it up at Carter's funeral? Wow! Oh and Biden telling Hitler Welcome home! Funny as hell! Oh wait - this just in.. Gavin Newsom waiting for Hitler in LA, meets him at AF-1, and kisses Hitlers ring. SHOCKING. When do we start rounding up the jews? THIS IS FASCINATING

Jo Ellen Washburn's avatar

What are you even talking about??? I think perhaps your road to recovery differs tremendously from mine.

Jo Ellen Washburn's avatar

As you well know, then, it's progress, not perfection. But you keep doing you, boo. Pick and choose. I'm a fallible human being.

Higgins's avatar

Yes, progress not perfection. That's a good one. We are on the same page, Thank you. Godspeed.

Just like he agreed to releasing 5000 Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. He said they agreed not to retaliate. They sped directly to the capital slaughtering people along the way. Trump didn't even wait for our military personnel to evacuate. Trump is vile and enjoys watching the helpless be victimized by thugs.

Any news organization that caves to dominion and pays them 800 million for God knows what ain’t for me. But hey I’m loving how George slopodopoulous paid Trump 15 million because of the defamation conviction. And Trumps lawyers humiliated ABC. Talk about public humiliation, isn’t that funny? Oh and Fake news CNN losing the biggest and most scandalous defamation lawsuit in 50 years for flat out lying about that dude saving lives in Ukraine. Say what you want about Trump, but he’s taken a sledgehammer to these Fake news outlets for good. That helps you and me. Both. That’s why Trump is so popular and winning the youth vote. WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Boasting that it was “like taking candy from a baby,” on Wednesday Elon Musk tricked Donald J. Trump into signing a reverse mortgage on the White House.

“All these years, you’ve fixed it, you’ve taken care of it,” Musk told Trump in the Oval Office. “Maybe it’s time for your home to start taking care of you.”

“There you go,” he whispered into Trump’s ear, putting the pen in his tiny hand.

Assuming ownership of the White House was just the latest real estate coup for Musk, who earlier in the week tricked Trump into signing over the deed to Mar-a-Lago.😎🤑

Its a really strange and honestly scary feeling knowing this evil gangster has taken power in America... I cannot remember a time in my life where I was genuinely afraid for the countrys and my own prospects. Just knowing that so many people in America are so susceptible to populism is insane. I can imagine that Hitler's rise to power was very similar, he promised to make Germany great again. But with Hitler the population had a REASON to turn to populism. Germany had a really rough time after WWI and he promised to fix it. But here, we have become so spoiled and unable to cope with even the slightest of problems in our lives that a little bit of inflation or whatever the issues people are dealing with is enough to throw democracy out the window... I just don't understand how, after he said SAID IT with his own mouth over and over that he going to try and cut federal funding for social security, food stamps, and Obamacare, and these people, who utterly rely on these programs... We're db enough to vote for him. Fox news is god damn poison, worse than fentanyl it's a toxic disgusting poison on our society like nothing we've ever seen before those people are evil incarnate. I pray that somehow, some way someone stops h from taking my disability or medical or foods stamps I could not survive at all without them...

Somewhere in the South's avatar

As someone told me, you will be fine. Don't let them destroy your daily life. Do you think all of us here are going to watch innocent people get deported? Not on our watch. We have voices, we have representatives like this forum who aren't going to sit back and be subservient. No one is taking away your disability or food stamps. We won't let them, I promise you that. It's illegal and will take a hell of a long time to change if anyone tries. They will fail. They are already failing because hateful people can't work together without destroying each other. I experienced that in corporate America and I promise you this is no different, and a lot worse.

Maureen Mannion's avatar

Thanks for your spirit of defiance. You're right cutting programs like Social Security would be a huge effort and an extremely unpopular one. It's only 2 yrs til the midterms and then hopefully Trump supporters will be singing a different tune.

People of the LIE a book by Scott Peck describes the Trump cabinet even though it was written in the 80's.

America has been fortunate in that she hasn't been tested like other country's who suffered through war and destruction. This next 4 years will be a test of how much Americans value democracy.

Laurie Marsden's avatar

I have reread People of the Lie since the D was reelected. Clearly a correlation. For people who haven't read it he talks about confusion as key weapon in an "evil" person's arsenal....

Maureen Mannion's avatar

My goodness it's amazing it's still in print. Peck also stresses that evil leaves chaos in it's wake.

In an effort to learn about how people historically have responded to tyrrany I read about Vaclav Havel, Czech dissident who became President. His recommendation is to hold onto Hope. Sounds simplistic but he and others reiterate that no tyrant can do anything to one's inner commitment to Love and Hope.

I found a wonderful website called The Marginalian operated by Maria Popova who knows about tyrrany having lived through it.

One of the other writers/poets Maria includes is Walt Whitman's thoughts on democracy. His point is we seem to expect democracy to progress onward but of course it doesn't. It goes forward and takes falls backwards but learns and moves ahead.

Obviously democracy is falling backwards with Trump but we the people cannot lose Hope but hold onto our beliefs that "this too shall pass."

Recommend the website for it's beauty, relevance, emphasis on resilience of the human spirit.

He will not commit to making sure that everyone has access to even basic healthcare. He will press ahead with tariffs and other actions that will cause economic harm to everyone but the richest Americans. He has vowed to use his power to go after numerous political foes and government officials who would pointed out the truth who would not do his bidding. How can he put an end to birthright citizenship? Is that even possible?

It will be very tough since it is in the Constitution. Legal battles will follow any attempt on his part.

Also, isn’t Elon an immigrant? His mother is Canadian, but I think his father is South African. If so, he’s a birthright citizen and therefore should leave.

H. Ronald Hartman's avatar

Trump already fired Elon - was he uncomfortable having a true billionaire telling him what to do when he has been a spongy fraud all his life ?

Matthew Witters's avatar

TBH I think that should be changed. We shouldn't be incentivizing people to come here illegally and being born here making you an automatic citizen incentivizes that. As much as I know immigration is a source of strength it def needs to be regulated and done right or you have a net negative. Take for instance Canada's recent experience with immigration where they opened up to millions of immigrants and then ended up with a horrible housing crisis because of it. I despise trump but some of his takes do have points. If there wasn't some truth to some of the problems he points out people wouldn't be supporting him.

What does that have to do with anything? People can come here legally. You're a fool if you think a country can just allow the entire worlds disaffected population to come here with no restrictions. I'm not saying we should close our borders but we should not make it easier and more enticing the illegally come here. You have to live in reality man, nations have borders for a reason. unchecked immigration can be extremely damaging to a country if it's not done right.

In my “blue” state the dem gov is a huge sycophant “looking forward to working with RFk Jr. to improve our health.” Uh huh. One of our colleges has already changed its DEI office name to the Office of Collaboration, The Capitol here is preparing for deportations not by resisting or protecting targetting of innocent people, but by looking for foster families. Our elected reps in D.C. could not summon one more vote to protect our DOD from an ignorant, incompetent alcoholic, woman abuser, mysogenist, racist Nazi and Putin booster and syncophant from Fox Noise. The President, VP, and all the people he nominates and takes advice and money from mostly share same characteristics. Dedicated government workers are being rapidly replaced by know-nothing ideologues there to say Heil Drumpf.

Project 2025 implementation will slash social safety net programs, protection of our human and worker rights, health, economy, education and environment.

Protection lies in community, and community us the anti-dote to despair. But we are largely siloed, and not mobilized to resist. Local officials and organizations are giving in “in advance” of being forced to, making takeover easy and normalizing the fascists.

I just couldn't afford to go to a doctor. So Canada won't take me. At least it gets me out of Jury duty most of the time. lol. This country is so broken, we lock people in cages for drugs... like in my head this is like putting people in cages with cancer or something. being a drug addict is already the most horrendous punishment. America is the most drug fueled country in the world, and instead of creating a reasonable framework of laws and legalizing them, we should add to the hell addicts endure by destroying their souls the rest of the way by putting them in a cage lol. Lol if you only knew my life story... it would sell millions of copies. But I'm no writer. After that stuff with buying my meds from india in 2012 I lost my job as a security guard, they took my license for 15 years. I am not proud of it but i was desperate and started selling drugs on the dark web. I was literally a month away from being on the street with nothing. I've had addiction problems my entire life dealing with severe mental health problems. Anyways, I ended up making over a million dollars in 2 years and got caught a couple years later when someone told on me, did 4 1/2 years in federal prison and got out in the summer of 2023. They took all my money of course. My life story really does read like a book lol. I'm so passionate about finding new ways to deal with the drug problem in America because it truly does stem from a mental health crisis and the pointless war we are fighting on drugs is doing nothing whatsoever but harm to millions of Americans and their families, children growing up their entire childhoods without a parent for having the wrong chemical... that kid doesn't deserve that, and we know that these kids are many times more likely to end up on a wrong path. We spend over 100k a year to keep someone in Prison in America. Imagine if instead of locking drug addicts (AND dealers, remember that most dealers started out as users who couldn't afford to buy their drugs, whioch would be affordable if not for prohibition) in cages we took that money and helped them get treatment, it's so much money to keep someone locked up you can literally pay for an apartment, food, a car even. We could be putting lives back together for FAR less money instead of completely destroying people's souls forever, which is exactly what prison does. I'll never be the same. I'm a much harder person today... I just cannot stress how much suffering prisoners go through. You honestly just cannot imagine the damage it does to your psyche. People get out of prison with NOTHING and are completely broken. I was lucky enough to have a grandma who let me live with her. But so so many people are released to the street with nothing but a bunch of hoops they have to jump through with probation. Family forgets about you but not after suffering greatly along with you when you first go to prison. You are then branded for LIFE with the felon brand. Good luck finding a decent job with a drug conviction. You are barred from some assistance programs, you LITERALLY cannot rent an apartment in ANY apartment complex with a felony, they just refuse to rent to felons, how is this not illegal (i understand in sex offence cases) what do you think people are going to do when they get out and have no way to take care of themselves??? They just go back to what they were doing, and these prison industry unions and their lobbies count on it. It's job security. Which is why every time anything comes up in congress to try and stop this pointless war on the poor and suffering, they show up in force to lobby to keep these draconian pointless laws in place and sentences insanely high. Why is the prison lobby spending money to lobby congress to keep up a war on drugs that fills their prison? Think about that. It's a sick and completely broken system.

He most certainly said that it needs to be “adjusted” and revised, and has NOT spoken out in response to statements by others who have said cuts are likely. By expelling immigrants who pay billions into the system but never get any $$ back, he will weaken it even more. As of right now, ALL person on SS face a possible 30% cut seven years from now. His inaction and policies will push that date up. One of their ideas is to end Medicaid eligibility for Medicare seniors that pays for most nursing home care. What will happen to your childless great aunt when she can’t pay $5K a month for continued care? Will you take her in and care for her? All so he can shovel even more money to the his already overwhelmingly rich supporters.

tRumputin? Bravo for originality!

JP4M's avatar

Actually, President Biden has improved our economy. T. uses faulty, carefully chisen information to make people believe otherwise. MSNBC showed details and the distortions that were used.

Bonnie LeBlanc's avatar

Economists have stated we are the "Envy of the world." Trump has to paint a picture that everything is in chaos which it is not. The border crossings are down, crime is down, employment is up and I could go on and on. But the evil one has to pretend like everything is horrible in America. IT is NOT. The wanna be King has to pretend only he can fix it-I bet he can't tie his own shoes. (I know he can't read or think logically) America is already great-with no help from him, I might add. And by signing us out of the Paris climate agreement-the planet will not survive much longer anyway with these fools in charge. But the hopeful part is--his frontal temporal dementia has been around for years now and according to numerous psychologists they're assessment is that his condition is obviously rapidly declining so he might not have much longer to live. Amen.

Your words speak for many, Matthew. This is SO much stress on so many.

I am in the same boat and my daughter and myself have only Social Security and Medicaid as any income.

She became permantly disabled by two people who were never charged. We didn’t ask for this, but that’s how we have survived for nearly 23 years.

I would have like to gotten some justice as she is the grand daughter of a WWII vet.

God help us all cope with this.

You and so many others rely on these benefits to live and so many are children, our beloved elderly, those with serious health conditions and those with painful disabilities mentally and physically. Not even republicans will stand for this, it’s literally an abomination. They should have never taken money out of these accounts that the American citizens have paid into for decades.

I wouldn’t watch the inauguration if you paid me a million dollars.

TCinLA's avatar

How about a million and a half? :-)

Kim's avatar

I would. The money could go to good acts. Nobody offered that, so I cleaned and organized my kitchen instead. And blasted out some good music for the brain waves. Beats...they're what's for dinner...

Higgins's avatar

Chewing glass is harmful to your gums, esophagus, and stomach lining. Not to mention, the colon and sphincter. Not recommended,

Hayden's avatar

I did watch the inauguration, including the scripted speech and the unscripted speech that followed. I did so while taking notes on what I heard and saw.

Folks, this guy, Mary Trump’s own uncle, is now president of the United States. It behooves to sit up and pay attention. A whole lot of Americans are eating the crap he is dishing out while thinking it is caviar. Unless we wise up, his harms will be on us.

Dianne Nancy Taylor's avatar

I think too much media attention sent him to the White House in the first place. All the while, MARY is the only Trump who should be anywhere near politics.

Mary Hall's avatar

When you figure out how to make Faux News stop paying attention to Mary’s uncle Donald, please let us know — after you have patented your secret sauce.

Did not watch TV all day. Finally caught few Conauguration clips on CBS evening news which was all I could stomach. The lies continue to spew out of the Orange Jesus nonstop. He continues to try to sow fear and confusion with threats of massive unconstutional deportations, and divert attention with nonsense like renaming the Gulf of America vs. Mexico, taking over Panama Canal, Greenland, Canada, etc, hoping we won't notice he has no clue about actual serious governance. We must resist!

Dianne Nancy Taylor's avatar

Debbie White's avatar

Me either. He is so small, selfish and petty. His tiny fragile ego could not handle the flags being at half staff in honor of Jimmy Carter. Heidi Walter's avatar

Hang in there, Mary. We are in a time where the truth will be revealed. All who have feet of clay will be exposed.

Somewhere in the South's avatar

I totally believe this and it's about to start. But America wants an ongoing reality show, and that's what we'll get. I hope people don't get hurt in the process, but that's unavoidable. Or is it? Not so sure anymore. We're not as quiet as we were in 2017 when this inauguration travesty happened initially.

Heidi Walter's avatar

Yup, the bad guys are outnumbered now, they perhaps don't know it yet.

JP4M's avatar

I love that thought! Thank you!

Dana Cunningham Anderson's avatar

Those of us with some sense still left (LEFT!) can consciously refuse to watch The (so-called) “Reality” Show. It does’t work for them if they have no audience to play to.

Some percentage of the poor, deceived millions who voted for DJT will be forced within themselves to come to terms with how DJT has betrayed them. Some will be searching for support; some will decide to stop watching the DJT “Reality” Show.

We can make ourselves ready to help them become true supporters of democracy. We can prepare ourselves to help these disaffected Trump loyalists learn how our democracy can meet their unmet needs for opportunity and fairness.

Let us use this time to strengthen ourselves and our vision for inclusive democracy rather than allowing ourselves to succumb to the fear DJT will try every single day to project onto us. That fear, let us remember, is HIS internal reality bolstered by HIS insecurity, by HIS internal shame and fear of inferiority. Do not take on HIS reality or help him spread his disinformation by WATCHING HIM! Instead stay firmly grounded in your own Light and leave DJT to be engulfed in —and by — his own darkness.

Higgins's avatar

I agree, the first move in the great unmasking started today, when former President Biden pardoned his family members for the crimes they committed with 15 minutes of power remaining. Additional unmasking happened earlier when former President Biden pardoned the J6 committee for all their crimes committed. So there’s about 15 people or so unmasked. This truly is The great unmasking. Thank God for president Donald Trump.

Excruciating day. I have the TV off. My issue is no one in my immediate life is upset but me. Like being in a bad dream

Mrs Moore's avatar

Same with me. I go online for support from people who feel like I do. I talked to my friend this morning and I told him it’s a day of mourning for me, and he laughed. That made me hate him a little, so I’m not going to engage with anyone today and it is a day of deep mourning. I wish you the best. Excruciating is the right word.

JP4M's avatar

I hurt right along with you and cannot shake it yet today. Reading messages here helps.

What do you all do when you know otherwise good people who do not share your ideas? That is heartbreaking to me. I am sure itcisxwhymy parents always told me not to discuss politics or religion. As an older adult now, I occasionally forget. Depending on where you live, forgetting that rule is not safe.

Deea Lucia's avatar

I try to also. Sanity and Rational Conversation is Desperately needed. 😩

Lauren K's avatar

It's really a painful time. People have such diff ideas and you wonder how they are seeing things so differently until it feels almost surreal. Your friend who laughed was cruel. I prob won't be engaging with anyone at all forever. The things people say are so bizarre, it's less stressful not to know them. Trump has sown so much division people looking at and hearing the same things feel differently

Higgins's avatar

Respectfully, based on this comment thread, I believe that what you’ve discovered is that you’re in the minority. I know how that feels. You just have to stay strong and fight through it. Godspeed

Lauren K's avatar

At this point I have no idea what you're talking about. You're ghoulishly hanging around here hour after hour pretending you're on a mission from god when you're just another delusional Trump supporter with little grasp on reality. What you believe doesn't matter to me. Respectfully, that is.

Higgins's avatar

Thank you for being respectful. I know that's one of Mary's key tenants. Well, when your in the minority, I'd say in this case headed towards fringe minority, you'll find fewer people that adopt your mindset. Does that help? Godspeed.

Lauren K's avatar

No, nothing you've said here has helped. You come here to taunt and brag yet call yourself godly. Your words are here for all to see and, for that, I'm grateful. Shouldn't you be out celebrating Trump's latesr EO rescinding Biden's help for seniors paying too much for prescription drugs? LOL yay, Trump strikes again!

Laura Cruz's avatar

Gotta get involved. Find like minded. There must be a small Democratic Party branch. Volunteer at library? Get out there start talking.

Regina Engelken's avatar

That's so hard. I'm sorry.

Higgins's avatar

God loves you. President Donald J Trump loves you. You are safe.

Janet's avatar

NO, stop trying to gaslight us. Many of us know we are no longer safe. Dark-skinned immigrants certainly are not. It’s just a matter of time until transgendered people and possibly gays will get beaten up in the streets.

Higgins's avatar

Actually, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians love president Trump. Merely look at the exit polls.

Lauren K's avatar

Ghouls love him. Patty Hearst loved her captor too, what's your point.

Higgins's avatar

I remember the SLA and Patty Hearst. That was a long time ago. I don't remember that 77 million people loved her captor though. Can you explain?

Lauren K's avatar

I won't be responding to you again. I didn't read your response. When I see the purple 'dennis' thing I skip over the comment. Have a nice life

Lauren K's avatar

I actually know and love black people, none of them love him.

Higgins's avatar

Lauren K's avatar

LOL if you're a 14 yo girl or Putin he loves you.

Diane Mouskourie's avatar

Today is a day I never believed was possible in our country. A convicted criminal has taken reign of our country. His plans for the destruction of democracy and the henchen and women he bestowed to implement those plans are mind boggling and heart wrenching. I fear for the future my grandchildren and great grandchildren will inherit. And I am unsure if the country an recover. The hate for other and the greed for power and financial corruption are unfathomable.

Somewhere in the South's avatar

I also fear what future generations will inherit, but that's what Americans want right now. Until they don't anymore. We may be a dumb people but we are also fickle. So there's that.

Hayden's avatar

Alternatively, one can ask, what were we to expect when so many Americans rely on dubious sources for all of their information about what is happening in our world.

Higgins's avatar

And 15 minutes before President Biden lost his power, he pardons the entire Biden crime family for all their crimes committed retroactively to 2014. The criminals have been removed from the White House, thank you Jesus!

Virginia D Fish's avatar

There are no crimes committed. Fox News doesn't help you to understand that.

Higgins's avatar

I don’t like Fox News, not my flavor. I get my information from congressional investigations, and dependable democrat voices, like Glenn Greenwald, Michael Shellenberger, Bari Weiss, Catherine Herridge to name a few.

As a Brit I have real sympathy for Americans. It’s a dreadful day! It is also an awful day for the world. I was in disbelief in 2016 and over the 4 years was shocked that Republicans embraced such a person. 11 books later, and including yours, I now know more about the Donald. I couldn’t watch coverage of this day, and many channels in the UK were covering it all. I hope you don’t lose heart, more than ever we have to stand up for what we believe in and not succumb to these oligarchs and fascists who want to interfere in our countries. We could be in your place in 5 years time so I’m praying our politicians find a way to keep us from authoritarianism!!

At the moment I have no idea. It’s a Government that is only 6 months into its 5 year term and certainly better than the previous 14 years of Conservative governments. I think it’s a problem they have to navigate. At the moment politicians here are being careful with respect to what they are saying about Trump (apart from right-wingers who love him) but I’m hoping behind the scenes they are working on ways to protect the UK. We have already had Elon Musk offering a large donation to one far right party so hoping something is put in place to safeguard this country.

THANKS for still hanging out with us Mary. We are the other 50%. Just be kind to all and fill your life with song, dance, art, reading, and getting to know your neighbors. I am choosing where to put my energies and monies that can help others not as fortunate as me.

Ruthy Wexler's avatar

Yes. Yes. I had a Movie Night last night, all of us 78-80 year old smart, caring woman. We watched a wonderful George Stevens movie: "I Remember Mama." Not corny. Not irrelevant. All about human nature and love and the good immigrants bring to our country. We all cried. We vowed to keep meeting. We are taking the advice of these wonderful journalists like Mary Trump and Dean and Jim Stewartson and the Meidas Network and TIMOTHY SNYDER and forming Havens. Giving each other friendship and love and art.

Somewhere in the South's avatar

You are so right. No one has to take away our daily joy. Thanks for posting this excellent advice.

Lauren K's avatar

We're all being tested in a way. How do you find inner peace/strength in times of trouble. My upbringing tested me mightily but it was a family issue, so going out into the world was hopeful, now there is nowhere out in the world that feels hopeful, so it's up to us to create that place. In a way there might be something truly valuable about the struggle that brings new resolve. Being joyful is a form of resistance

JP4M's avatar

Absolutely, you are definitely on track! This part of the day will pass. We each deserve to enjoy the life we have as much as the next person. It is an individual gift for each of us, and we must not let him or anybody else keep us from finding love and joy in our hearts and in our lives. There are other people suffering, and my now deceased late friend always said, “Do what you can to make other people’s lives a little easier.” He never added that doing do helps you both smile, but it does! There are a lot of good people.

Higgins's avatar

Uh that’s about 48%. We are in power. You are the minority. Don’t forget that. The people have spoken. Loudly.

Somewhere in the South's avatar

Dennis, this is supposed to be a safe place for the 'misguided." Enough, darling. We get it, and by the way we're louder. :)

Higgins's avatar

I have not been rude. I’ve been sent by God to help comfort the forlorn. I’ve repeated over and over that everyone is safe. I like you guys. I’m not hurting anyone. I’m doing my best to comfort people. But if you insist, I’ll leave. Yeah you guys are loud, but I find all people to be mostly nice people. Everywhere. Both sides. This group is especially nice. Even the ones that don’t like me.

Lauren K's avatar

Before we accept your comfort, you would have to prove that a) god exists and b) he personally instructed you to find a thread of forlorns on social media. Tall order friend.

Nancy T's avatar

The first thing the felon did was completely diss and insult President Biden. That was after tantruming until the flag was put at full mast today. I only hope he gets the disrespect he so deserves when the time comes.

James Quinn's avatar

Trump neither understands not cares to understand the nation he claims to love. He’s mistaking love of self for love of country. Or, as another narcissist once bragged, “L’etat, c’est moi”. The two are not compatible.

As Winston Churchill once noted about another such individual, ‘There but for the grace of God, goes god”. I suspect the Trumpists are about to find out that they should have heeded that old adage, “Be careful what you ask for; you may get it."

Ruthy Wexler's avatar

The novels are waiting to be written. About the future where Truth is not even a concept. About the future where Eric Trump, the biggest Know Nothing, will get his turn to rule, just like the kings of old. Novels that will show us how crazy this all is, because Art will have to do it, logic cannot.

James Quinn's avatar

Some of those novels have already been written. Ever read Seven Days in May?

Becci Hayes's avatar

Imparting the wisdom of the ages, as always. Thanks, Jim.

Still think your dictator's threat to annex Canada is funny? As a Canadian, I apologize for not sharing your sense of humoUr. I remember a conversation we once had about the US' attempt to take over Canada in the past, along with my comment: "And we know how that ended". Let's be honest-- your dictator has no intention of dignifying Canada as the 51st state. No, we will be made a territory, with no voting or any other type of power, ripe for the pillaging of our resources.

I chose to do my small part of dissent by NOT watching any broadcasts today. Instead I am watching an Andy Griffith Marathon that takes me back to a happier, simpler time. Our days will be long for the next 4 years but we cannot give up or turn away. He and his gross followers cannot win.

Hayden's avatar

You did turn away today, but that was what you had to do to take care of yourself.

Rita Miller's avatar

Mary I refuse to listen or watch this inauguration. It is in direct contrast to Martin Luther King, and I cannot recognize your uncle . In my heart, he’s not a president, he’s a felon and a very evil man with no soul. I will resist his BS and threats everywhere I can. He should have been in prison! Kamala should have been president! Joe is a good man and I was so very relieved when he won in 2020. But as the old saying goes with regard to your uncle, “ money talks and shit walks!” Surely he must know you speak ill of him as his niece so what do you face with his retaliation and bullying?

Rita Miller's avatar

Yes it was sad how poorly Joe did but now we have a Nazi and I hoped people would never allow a Hitler wannabe to repeat history!

Higgins's avatar

He was convicted, yes but it’s on appeal. But yes he’s a convicted felon technically. Joe did take a hit to his reputation today when he pardoned his family. Can’t blame him for loving his family, but you must admit, the optics are not good. I think the 7,500 total pardons hurt him a little as well. Age caught up to him. Did you see that debate? I felt so bad for him. It was painful to watch. He was much more sharp and crisp 10 years ago. Obama should have endorsed him in 2016. He would’ve had a good shot at 2 terms. He just doesn’t have the stamina now. Sad but true.

Hayden's avatar

Whether we like it or not, Mary’s ne’er-do-well uncle is president now.

Higgins's avatar

I couldn't watch. Saw one photo in newsfeed of. Biden smiling to beat the band, also Jill Biden grinning. I feel for us all. SOMEONE please shout out, hold a sign... oh. We are doing it here. Thank you all. Thank you Mary.

I can't look at Democrats pretending or giving in/giving up. Is this what happened in Germany 1930s? I've to reread that history. I think it was pretty close, only we have more experience now so shouldn't we have learned a thing or twenty billion? Many thanks to Mary for being there and creating this safe place.

Andy's avatar

Yep. That's what it was like in Germany after Hitler got in. Most of that time Germany had to do restitution payments for world war 1. It refused, so its currency got devalued. It couldn't import anything. Most citizens were struggling just to buy a loaf of bread for ten grand. They were living on the streets. They weren't smiling, they were crying. They weren't aware of Hitler or any politics.

But, the wealthier people still had enough resources to keep their homes. The industrialists cozied up to Hitler. Both these groups attended parties and gatherings Hitler threw. They were more like today's Christmas office parties, where everybody wore a pasted smile on their face. And, periodically they had to throw out their arm when Hitler walked by or someone said something saintly of his deeds. But, otherwise a tense and awkward atmosphere of pasted smiles, like Biden's and his wife's. Welcome Jill Biden to your husband's turnip truck.

Hayden's avatar

Look. We are not in Germany in the early 1930s now.

I was describing what the Nazi era was like in Germany. It's a matter of already having happened.

Thank you, Mary, for all you have done and continue to do. You have no idea how many times I have thought back to your early words of warning. You told us he would burn the country down. You were so right.

I'm angry that Dem electeds showed up to this illegitimate inauguration.

Somewhere in the South's avatar

Same here. It's nauseating. How and why are they doing this?

Hayden's avatar

For good or ill, Democrats did not contest the election. As there was no (overt) dispute over whether the election was free and fair, Democrats had to vote to certify the election, and to show up to uphold our tradition of the peaceful transfer of power.

If any election should have been investigated, it’s this one! Drumpf said multiple times that he wasn’t worried about votes, and said that Musk knows about those vote counting computers better than anyone. Musk himself took credit for the swing state wins. The crickets are wild!

I’m reading Stendahl’s The Charterhouse of Parma for the first time right now. Seemed like a better idea than watching the speech. Triumph of the Shill.

Would you believe this novel begins by excoriating the father of the protagonist, a braindead right-winger of the Napoleonic era, for his hypocrisy, ignorance, and selfishness?

Some things never change. 1810s Milan or right here and now.

Thanks for sharing what you are reading. How many of you have read Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, an artist and art teacher? What a relief it is! The book has been a NYT best seller, the definitive 4th edition. It will help a lot of people to relax and find more to appreciate.

This is where I stand on this Donald Trump presidency.

If you agree, copy it, replace my signature with yours, copy it, and share it to others.

The 45th President, his cronies taking positions of authority in his Cabinet and administration, and the majority of Republicans in Congress, are a real and active threat to me, my way of life, and all, or most, of the people I love.

Some people, but primarily those who favor Trump and MAGA, are saying that we should give Trump a chance, that we should "work together" with him because he won the election and he is "everyone's president."

Very few of those saying that “worked together with” Joe Biden. Most of those who voted for Trump didn’t “work together with” any citizens who didn’t favor Trump. Many Republican members of Congress didn’t “work together with” one another, let alone Democrats.

Donald Trump “works together with” whomever he selfishly, and often capriciously, decides he favors in his own self promoting interests.

My position is:

I won’t ignore how badly Trump, and many Trump supporters, treated Barack Obama for 8 years. Lies about his legitimacy and hatred for his principles and his attempts to work within the system persist to this day.

I won’t pretend Trump didn’t stage an insurrection.

I won’t pretend he isn’t a criminal and convicted felon.

I won’t pretend he’s magically favored by the Old Testament God who once favored the young shepherd David.

I will not support his belief that “Hitler had some good ideas.”

I will not support anyone who believes that Veterans are suckers and losers and that because he was captured John McCain wasn’t a hero.

I will not support the elevation of military officers only because they agree to submit to a president the way Hitler’s officers were required to submit to him.

I will not support individuals who say oath’s words but have no intention of meaning them.

I will not support those who only said they admired Jimmy Carter after he was dead.

I will not "work together" to privatize Medicare, cut Social Security and Medicaid.

I will not "work together" to subvert the Constitution by illegitimately pushing unfit Cabinet nominees through on recess appointments without the advice and consent of the Senate.

I will not "work together" to build a wall.

I will not "work together" to persecute Muslims or other non-Christians.

I will not "work together" to shut out refugees from other countries fleeing political prosecution.

I will not "work together" to lower taxes on the 1%, or the 10%, and not alleviating the tax burden on the middle class and poor.

I will not "work together" to help Trump use the Presidency to line his pockets and those of his family and cronies.

I will not "work together" to weaken and demolish environmental protection.

I will not "work together" to sell American lands, especially National Parks, to companies which then despoil those lands.

I will not "work together" to enable the killing of whole species of animals just because they are predators, or inconvenient for a few, or because some people want to the thrill of killing them.

I will not "work together" to remove civil rights from anyone.

I will not "work together" to alienate countries that have been our allies for as long as I have been alive.

I will not "work together" to slash funding for education.

I will not "work together" to take basic assistance from people who are at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder.

I will not "work together" to get rid of common sense regulations on guns.

I will not "work together" to eliminate the minimum wage.

I will not "work together" to support so-called "Right To Work" laws, or undermine, weaken or destroy Unions in any way.

I will not "work together" to suppress any scientific research, on climate change, fracking, or any other subject, especially if a majority of scientists agree that Trump and his supporters are wrong on the facts.

I will not support individuals eh believe a woman’s only purpose is raising children and in the home.

I will not "work together" to criminalize abortion or restrict health care for women.

I will not "work together" to increase the number of nations that have nuclear weapons.

I will not "work together" to put even more "big money" into politics.

I will not "work together" to violate the Geneva Convention.

I will not "work together" to give the Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi Party and white supremacists a seat at the table, or to normalize their hatred.

I will not "work together" to deny health care to people who need it.

I will not "work together" to deny medical coverage to people on the basis of a "pre-existing condition."

I will not "work together" to increase voter suppression.

I will not "work together" to normalize tyranny.

I will not “work together” to eliminate or reduce ethical oversight at any level of government.

I will not "work together" with anyone who is, or admires, tyrants and dictators.

I will not support anyone that thinks it's OK to put a pipeline to transport oil on Sacred Ground for Native Americans and would run under the Missouri River, which provides drinking water for millions of people.

I will not "work together" to legitimize racism, sexism, fascist behavior and authoritarianism.

I will not “work together” to identify, segregate, and or discriminate against any individual, individuals, or groups of individuals on the basis of gender, gender preference, race, color, culture, religious and spiritual preference, age, or capabilities.

This is my line, and I am drawing it.

I WILL stand for honesty, love, respect for all living beings, and for the beating heart that is the center of Life itself.

I WILL stand for our constitution, rule of law, equal treatment of all under our laws, and government of, by, and for the people.

I will use my voice to reach out to the uninformed, and anyone who will listen, to assert that “winning", "being great again", "rich", or "beautiful" is nothing when it favors a minority over a common good, a majority, and at a cost that is others sacrificed to glorify it.

Signed,

John F McBride

Can we make it a period of enlightenment instead? The Renaissance was such an awakening with art. What can we all or each find to do to bring happiness to people? Good things could distract from the reality we must face though, so maybe we need to be sure that T. followers are attentive to the negative results of their collective choice. Still, if Democrats and other believers in goodness are happier than they are, what would that result be, especially if they yearn for the happinesses we are going to find!

By the way, a line from a very old song a friend used to sing comes to mind, and I’ll share it as an example of joy. It is, “There is sunshine in my soul today, more glorious than light.” Although it does have a particular context, the line is one we can appreciate for whatever great joy comes from within us.

I did not watch Trump’s speech last night. Many people are saying Trump admitted that Musk had some control of voting machines. Has anyone confirmed he said it. And what have Trump and Musk said about this? Pundits? I am really interested in hearing responses. Can Trump be impeached for swearing to “solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.when he is in violation of section 3 of the 14th Amendment?

Higgins's avatar

It’s been proven that he can get impeached for making a phone call to Zelenskyy. So yes, if the conditions are right, he can be impeached. You’d need a majority in the house to achieve that, and a conviction may be unlikely.

Ingrid Kirschbaum's avatar

Unfortunately it will take many deaths before some Republicans are able to find their souls and be ready to vote to stop Trump. It has only been 8 days and our Govt is already off the rails.

Like so many here, I am consumed by the events of...in fact, the past nine years. There is nothing I see or read about DJT and his cohort that doesn't inspire fear and/or fury, helpless fury.

On top of all the rest of this mess, just lately I keep thinking of our what-was-old-is-new-again first "lady". I understand she refused an invitation to tea from Mrs Biden. Maybe there's more to it than a bald refusal, but...nothing I can find rises to mitigate her recurrent rudeness. She is the antithesis of what a first lady should be, and pretty much always has been. Her "Be Best" and "I Really Don't Care Do U?" -- appalling.

Now I see the photo from today of the two top couples, and I'm struck by Melania's hat, which serves to conceal her face -- more importantly, the expression, or lack thereof, in her eyes.

This is a minor point -- admittedly verging on snarky -- in the vast landscape of all that we now must absorb of negativity and threat. I do not find her to be warm, or mentally acute, or even stylish. That's the mildest thing I can say about the whole business today.

JP4M's avatar

Perhaps the hat was an avenue of escape for her. I am not standing up for her, but your description makes me wonder. I also wonder what she would rather be going. It does not matter. I am not seeking to learn more in that category,

Thankyou Mary, I was 13 when he gave that speech. Given I didn't understand can remember my dad thinking he was a troublemaker. Through the years and segregation etc. took place and I found myself not in agreement with the thoughts of back in that time, when prejudice was very strong especially in the South. Yet I was born in Seattle Washington and we had moved to New Orleans where at that time it prejudice was at it's high time. Thankfully times have changed, people changed. But from the very beginning of time, God said he created all man in His likeness. What happened with just kindness.

The title of Trump’s speech should have been “American Carnage 2: Ultimate Carnage.” If possible, Trump’s second inaugural speech was darker than his first. Rather than seek to unite Americans, he painted the darkest possible picture of the state of the nation and the character of his opponents. And he set himself up as a kind of messiah figure, the man saved by God for the sake of national greatness. If you want to lay the groundwork for authoritarianism, that’s exactly how to do it.
